Ist Gott die Liebe wesentlich

Here is my translation of the hymn on love, “Ist Gott die Liebe wesentlich” (Johann Jacob Rambach, d. 1735), in GGELB #402 with melody assignment “Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht” and omitting stanzas 2–6 (on love to God and love to self). It is not in Fischer’s lexicon. I find it in the author’s Geistreiches Haus-Gesang-Buch (1735), no. 424, p. 508, with title “On the love of God, of ourself, and of our neighbor, as the content of the whole Law,” where the melody “O Jesu Christ meins…” or “Dies sind die heilgen zehn Gebot” is appointed.

 

GOD is essential Love and true,
Man must reflect that image too,
With love and charity to all,
Here in this life we mortal call.

[2 Since God doth love, thou too must love,
Love’s way doth to requital move.
He gives Himself in love to thee;
Give Him thyself and like Him be.

3 He, as the highest Good, is due
From soul and spirit honor true,
And all the pow’rs that in us move
Should show themselves to Him in love.

4 Self-love is not forbidden too,
Provided it be not undue;
If thou wilt love thyself, then mark:
Man, do so as God’s handiwork.

5 Pursue thy godly livelihood,
And hold God as the highest Good;
Thy heart His temple make alone,
Let soul and body be His own.

6 Seek not what flesh and blood desire,
For ’tis false love and deadly fire;
All yield to God, to thee the rest.
Then lov’st thou rightly and art blest.]

7 As thine own self thy neighbor love,
His soul’s salvation let thee move,
Forsake all hate and enmity
And from all selfishness be free.

8 On thine own good set not much store,
But seek thy neighbor’s good the more;
Let thy good works before him shine,
That he too may to good incline.

9 What thou wouldst have done unto thee,
Do unto others equally;
As thine own self thy neighbor love,
With all thy heart thy kindness prove.

10 In love give to thy neighbor heed,
His cause defend in every need.
Forbear not for all men to sigh:
This love delights the Father’s eye.

11 Thou findest not the pow’r in thee,
So trust in Jesus, who, since He
Is Love Himself, the same doth give,
And teaches how one ought to live.

12 Thy hindrances He takes away
And makes thee stronger day by day;
From heaven floweth into thee
What thou canst not, and plenteously.

13 Then love will be no burd’ning art,
Since thou hast Jesus in thy heart.
God is with thee, His house art thou,
And naught but love flows from thee now.

so muß der Mensch im Bilde* sich *oder, nach diesem Bilde
darstellen in dem Leben hier
auch voller Liebe für und für.

*2 Liebt Gott, so mußt du lieben auch,
denn dieses ist der Liebe Brauch.*
Gibt er sich dir in Liebestrieb,
kehr du es um, dich wieder gib.

*3 Er, als das höchste Gut ist werth,
daß ihm werd Seel und Geist verehrt,
und daß, was in uns sich bewegt,
werd in der Liebe dargelegt.

*4 Selbstlieb ist uns zwar auch erlaubt,
wo sie Gott seine Ehr nicht raubt.
Willst du dich lieben, o so merk:
Mensch, liebe dich als Gottes Werk.

*5 Such dein Erhaltung, wie Gott will,
und halte seinem Würken still:
Gib ihm das Herz zum Tempel ein,
da Leib und Seel ihm eigen sein.†1. Cor. 6, 20.

*6 Such nicht, was Fleisch und Blut gelüst,
weil dieses falsche Liebe ist:
Schreib alles Gott,† dir nichtes zu, †Ps. 115, 1.
so liebst du recht, und bleibst in Ruh.

7 Den Nächsten liebe gleich wie dich, †Gal. 5, 14.
und suche sein Heil inniglich;
leg allen Haß und Feinschaft ab,
und bring den Eigensinn ins Grab.

8 Such deinen Nutzen nie so sehr,
des Nächsten suche noch viel mehr; †Phil. 2, 4.
leucht ihm in guten Werken für,
daß er im Guten folge dir.

9 Was du nicht willst das dir gescheh,
damit thu auch nicht andern weh. †Luc. 6, 31.
Den Nächsten liebe gleich als dich,
von Herzensgrunde inniglich.

10 Sei jedem liebreich zugethan,
und nimm dich sein in Nöthen an.
Dein Seufzen sei vor Niemand still; *Bete für alle Menschen, 1 Tim. 2, 1.
dies ist die Liebe, die Gott will.

11 Du findst sie nicht in deiner Kraft,
drum glaub an Jesum, der sie schafft,
der lehret, wie man lieben soll,
weil er selbst ist der Liebe voll.

12 Er nimmt weg, was dich hindern kann,
und zeucht mit neuer Kraft dich an;
vom Himmel fließet aus in dich,
was du nicht kannst ganz mildiglich.

13 Dann wird dir Lieben keine Last, †1 Joh. 5, 3.
weil Jesum du in Herzen hast;
Gott ist in dir, du bist sein Haus,
nichts fließt von dir, als Liebe, aus.
