Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, / daß du für uns . . . & O lieber Gott, schweig du nur still

Here is my translation of the hymns “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, / daß du für uns ein Bürgen bist” and “O lieber Gott, schweig du nur still” (B. Ringwaldt, 1580), from the author’s Evangelia, appointed as post-Gospel prayer verses for Trinity XXII. The long gospel parapharse for this Sunday Ringwaldt sets to Vater unser, and thus gives a matching prayer stanza as an alternative to the 2-stanza prayer hymn which he set to “Wär Gott nicht mit uns.”

To the tune: Wär Gott nicht mit uns diese Zeit.

LORD Jesus Christ, our thanks to Thee,

Who in great love didst offer

Thyself, to be our surety

And death for us to suffer

For our ten thousand pounds of debt

Which none could pay, to turn the threat

Of God Thy faithful Father!

2 Grant that this wondrous benefit

May be forgotten never,

And that we may, as taught by it,

So treat our brother ever

And pardon him his errors all,

Nor by a vengeful spirit fall

In peril of salvation. Amen.

Or, to the tune Vater unser im Himmelreich.

DEAR God, wilt Thou me thus forgive

I gladly will, while here I live,

Forget the small iniquity

With which my friend offendeth me!

Receive me and my debtors all

And bring us to Thy heav’nly hall. Amen.

GERMAN

Im Thon, Wär Gott nicht mit uns diese Zeit.

Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ,

daß du für uns ein Bürgen

aus großer Lieb geworden bist,

und hast dich lassen würgen,

von wegen der zehn tausend Pfund

die unser keiner zahlen konnt

Gott deinem frommen Vater.

2 Gib, daß wir solcher Wohlthat groß

zu keiner Zeit vergessen,

und gleichfalls unserm Mitgenoß

des Glaubens also messen,

ihm auch verzeihen seine Feil

und nicht aus Rachgier unser Heil

der Seelen übergeben. Amen.

Oder im Vater Unser Thon.

O lieber Gott, schweig du nur still,

das mein ich gern vergessen will,

was wohl von kleiner Missethat,

mein Freund an mir begangen hat,

nimm mich und meinen Schuldmann auf,

und bring uns in deim Reich zuhauf. Amen.
