O höchster und gerechter Gott

Here is my translation of the Confirmation hymn “O höchster und gerechter Gott” (Anon., bef. 1759?), appearing in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #290, plus the five stanzas (4, 5, 6, 7, 11) omitted from that cento. The hymn emphasizes an Enlightenment view and form of Confirmation with its heightened solemnity; the repeated prayer for “strengthening” echoes one sense of the word Confirmation itself. In Christian Friedrich Voß’s Auserlesene Lieder vors Herz gesamlet (Sommerfeld/Pf., 1759), it appears with special rubrics indicating who is to sing which stanzas. There it is titled: “At the Confirmation of Children” and is assigned the melody “Nun freut euch lieben Christen gmein.” I restore this version, indicating with square brackets the stanzas omitted by the Wisc. Hymnal. The melody in that hymnal is “Mein Herzens Jesu, [meine Lust],” which is now most often associated with “Du Lebensbrot, Herr Jesu Christ.”

O RIGHTEOUS God Most High, give heed,
O gracious Father, hear us!
Weighed down, we come in time of need,
To Thee, for grace to cheer us.
We seek, O Lord, Thy countenance;
Cast not Thy needy children hence!
Oh, let us find Thy favor!

2 In Christ from all eternity
Thy love abounded to us,
And this affection finally
To love of Thee then drew us;
Thy Son for us did dearly pay,
And we, on our Baptism day,
Were as Thy children welcomed.

3 Alas, Thou knowest all too well
How faithlessly we acted,
How we in carnal lust did dwell,
By vanities distracted!
How little was our love to Thee!
How oft by our iniquity
Did we, alas, aggrieve Thee!

[4 Now is our guilty record plain,
Our heart cries hell eternal!
Thy Word on us speaks curse and pain,
And threatens flames infernal;
Alas, the flooding of Thy wrath,
And zeal that burns all in its path,
Now o’er our soul is hanging.

5 Oh, who will help us in our trial?
Who from the curse deliver?
Who will with God us reconcile?
Who chains of death will sever?
Who will reform our wicked heart?
And healing to our soul impart,
And to our wounded conscience?

6 Lord Christ, we sinners look to Thee!
Thou only hast salvation!
Oh, save us from th’ atrocity
Of sin’s accumulation!
O faithful Shepherd, be our stay,
For we, Thy sheep, have gone astray:
Wilt Thou leave us to perish?

7 Oh nay! Thou neither canst nor wilt,
For Thou wast slaughtered for us.
Shall Thy heart fail to break, which spilt,
For our sake, blood most glorious?
Thy heart with longing breaks in Thee,
And calls to us: Come unto Me!
I will Myself refresh you.]

8 Thus, Lord, we fall before Thy face
To beg a gracious sentence;
Unbar to us the door of grace
Receive our true repentance:
And take our heart and make it Thine,
Our spirit, mind, and sense refine,
And give our soul Thy healing.

9 Here is our heart and mouth and hand—
Let them preserve forever
The covenant of love unstained,
Renewed here by Thy favor.
Away vile passions, earthly bliss,
This heart to Jesus hallowed is,
And e’er devoted to Him.

10 God, Holy Spirit, let Thy pow’r,
Which in good works acts ever
To will and do, make us this hour
Strong for this high endeavor;
To our faint weakness add Thy force,
And keep us in our daily course
To Jesus always faithful.

That God the strength would lend us;
And others who attend today,
That naught from faith would bend us;
Yea, come, the cov’nant join ye now,
With heart and mouth yourselves to vow

Watch over these Thy children here

13 Inflame and sanctify their mind
By Thy all-gracious Spirit,
And show them by Thy mercy kind
The path of truth and merit;
Let them not stay to either hand,
Nor in the sinner’s counsel stand!

14 Yet grant us oft of grace and love
Clear, comforting expressions,
And judge us not as we deserve;
Forgive us our transgressions!
Our treachery is great and sore,
We wretched are, bereft and poor,
Yet Thou art full of mercy.

15 We come as one united whole,
Each one a sorry debtor,
To Thee, kind Lover of the soul,
And pledge our faith to better!
Oh, help us by Thy heav’nly might,

du Vater aller Gnaden,
wir kommen jetzt in unsrer Noth,
mühselig und beladen,
wir suchen, Herr, dein Angesicht,
verwirf uns arme Kinder nicht,
ach las uns Gnade finden.

2 Du warst uns zwar von Ewigkeit
in Christo schon gewogen,
und deine Huld hat in der Zeit
uns auch zu dir gezogen:
dein Sohn hat uns gar theur erkauft
und du hast uns, da wir getauft,
zu Kindern angenommen.

3 Ach aber dir ist auch bewußt,
wie treulos wir gehandelt,
und wie wir nach des Fleisches Lust
in Eitelkeit gewandelt!
Wie schlecht bist du von uns geliebt!
Wie oft, ach leider! oft betrübt
durch unsre viele Sünden!

und Schäflein deiner Heerde.

13 Erleucht und heil'ge ihr Gemüth
durch deines Geistes Gnade,
und leite sie durch deine Güt
auf deiner Wahrheit Pfade;
laß ihrer keines irre gehn
nach in dem Rath der Sünder stehn,
Herr, stärke sie im Glauben!

14 Doch schenke uns auch deine Huld,
laß uns auch Gnade finden!
