Wohlauf! mein Herz, zu Gott

 Here is my translation of the Prayer hymn “Wohlauf mein Herz zu Gott” (Johann Olearius, 1711), in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #318, first appearing in the author’s Geistliche Singe-Kunst (1671) with the word “Andacht” for later “Opfer.” According to Stier, it is “a brief, heartfelt encouragement to devotion and prayer based on the certain promise of being heard in the name of the triune God.” The appointed melody is “Nun danket alle Gott.”

 

RISE, heart, with joy to God
Thine off’ring let be given, [Thy rev’rence…] or [Be thy devotion…]
That thy request and pray’r
May pierce the clouds to heaven,
Since God doth bid thee pray
And thou may’st through His Son
With courage bold approach
Before His mercy-throne.

2 Thy Father’s own command
It is that thou implore Him;
Thy Brother bade thee come
With confidence before Him;
The precious Comforter
Gives thee faith’s mighty word,
And so thy heartfelt pray’r
Is certain to be heard.

3 Here dost thou see God’s heart,
Which can no wish deny thee.
His precious Word dispels
Whate’er may terrify thee.
What seems impossible
His hand can do, and will,
Which hath already turned
From thee so many an ill.

4 Come, then, come boldly now,
In Jesus’ name imploring!
Say: “O dear Father, help!
I am Thy child adoring.
Amen! It shall be done!
Thou wilt not me foreswear;
Thou wilt, Thou canst, Thou shalt
Do as Thy words declare.”

Wohlauf, mein Herz, zu Gott
dein Opfer frölich bringe, [dein Andacht…]
daß dein Wunsch und Gebet
durch alle Wolken dringe,
weil Gott dich beten heißt,
und du durch seinen Sohn
so freudig treten darfst
vor seinen Gnadenthron!

2 Dein Vater ist's der dir
befohlen hat zu beten;
dein Bruder ist's, der dich
getrost vor ihn heißt treten.
Der werthe Tröster giebt
dir Glaubensworte ein;
drum wird auch dein Gebet
gewiß erhöret sein.

3 Da siehst du Gottes Herz,
das kann dir nichts versagen.
Sein Wort, sein theures Wort
vertreibt ja alles Zagen.
Was dir unmöglich dünkt,
kann seine Vaterhand
doch geben, die von dir
schon so viel Noth gewandt.

4 Komm nur, komm freudig her,
in Jesu Christi Namen!
Sprich: lieber Vater, hilf!
Ich bin dein Kind! sprich: Amen!
Ich weiß es wird geschehn,
du wirst mich lassen nicht;
du wirst, du willst, du kannst
thun, was dein Wort verspricht!
