O Mensch, wie ist dein Herz bestellt

Here is my translation of the hymn “O Mensch, wie ist dein Herz bestellt” (Laurentius Laurentii, 1700), as found in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #281. It first appears in the author’s Evangelia Melodica as the second hymn for Sexagesima, where it serves as a spiritual application of the Gospel text concerning man’s receptivity to the Word of God through faith and repentance. The appointed melody in the Wisc. hymnal is “Ach, Gott vom Himmel, sieh darein,” but in Ev. Mel., “Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält,” while Fischer indicates “Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.”

O MAN, how is thy heart arrayed?
Unto thy life be heedful!
With what fruit is thy acre laid,
Wild thorns or grapevines needful?
For by the fruit the seed is known,
And who it is the land hath sown—
Thy God or that corrupter.

2 If then thy heart be like the road
And like a well-worn byway,
Where fowl eat what the sower sowed
From off sin’s easy highway;
Oh, prove thyself! It is not jest;
Stands thus thy heart within thy breast,
Then art thou to be pitied!

3 For if they snatch thy seed away,
Or trample or devour it,
Then hath thy faith no strength to stay,
Thy soul no food to pow’r it.
Though in thine ear the seed should fall,
But not thine heart, the traces small
That lead to life are trampled.

4 And if thy heart is hard as stone,
If sins its softness alter,
That seed, which on such rocks is thrown
Will surely fail and falter;
A rocky soil no vigor gives,
Its seed is pow’rless while it lives
To spread its roots and flourish.

5 While yet thy heart with sin is coarse,
Nor by the Law is broken
Through true repentance and remorse,
No fruit can there be woken.
Do not thy penitence forestall,
Believe, and at God’s footstool fall,
So shall thy heart find healing.

6 Thy heart is often full of thorns,
With cares and worries crowded,
With treasures oft itself adorns,
Then is the seed all shrouded,
Yea, choked and throttled utterly,
And never hath a sprout to see;
This much is to be pitied!

7 So is it when with wealth and gold
A man is busied wholly,
And for the pleasures of this world
His eye and heart seek solely;
Then no good thing can come to light,
His lust is never sated quite;
The seed is surely stifled.

8 Yet, praise the Lord! good soil is still
Discovered in creation—
The heart that knows the Lord’s good will,
And has a good foundation—
The seed which God has sprinkled there
A hundredfold more fruit doth bear;
Such hearts are right and proper.

9 He who hath ears, now let him hear,
And prove his heart unfeignèd;
For lo, the truth is spoken here:
With flatt’ry naught is gainèd.
Time flees away, the end draws nigh,
If on bad soil the seed doth lie,
Thou must forever perish.

10 Lord, let my heart by sorrow be
For sowing better suited,
That Thy seed may take root in me,
And leave the field well fruited;
A thousandfold let them be known
When I shall come before Thy throne;
This is my heart’s deep yearning.

GERMAN

1 O Mensch, wie ist dein Herz bestellt?
Hab Achtung auf dein Leben!
Was trägt für Frucht dein Herzensfeld?

Ach, prüfe dich! Es ist kein Scherz;
ist so bewandt dein armes Herz,
so bist du zu beklagen.

3 Denn ist der Saame weggerafft,
vertreten und gefressen,
so hast du keine Glaubenskraft,

ein Felsenstein hat keinen Saft;
drum hat der Saame keine Kraft
zu spießen und zu schießen.

5 So lang noch nicht zerknirscht dein Herz
und vom Gesetz zerschlagen
durch wahre Buße, Reu und Schmerz,
so kann's nicht Früchte tragen.
Bedenk es wohl, und thue Buß,
glaub vest, und falle Gott zu Fuß,
so ist dein Herz genesen.

6 Oft ist das Herz auch dornen voll,
mit Sorgen angefüllet,
oft lebet es in Reichtum wohl:
da wird er Saam verhüllet,
ja er ersticket ganz und gar,
und wird nicht einmal offenbar;
das ist wohl zu beklagen.

7 So geht es, wenn man nur um Geld
und Reichthum ist bemühet,
und nur noch Wollust dieser Welt
mit Aug und Herzen siehet;
da kann kein Gutes haben Statt,
wo man der Wollust nicht wird satt;
der Saame muß ersticken.

8 Doch ist, Gott Lob! noch gutes Land
auf dieser Welt zu finden,
das Gott dem Herrn allein bekant,
da in den Herzensgründen
der Saame, den Gott eingelegt,
noch hundertfältig Früchte trägt;
das sind die rechten herzen.

9 Wer Ohren hat, der höre doch,
und prüfe sich ohn Heucheln,
Dieweil es heute heisset noch:
hier muß sich keiner schmeicheln.
Die Zeit vergeht, das Ende nacht:
fällt auf kein gutes Land die Saat,
so mußt du ewig sterben.

10 Herr Jesu, laß mein Herze sein
zerknirschet und zerschlagen,
damit der Saame dring hinein;
und laß ihn Früchte tragen,
die mir im Himmel folgen nach,
da ich sie finde tausendfach,
das wünsch ich mit Verlangen.
