Gott Vater! höre unsre Bitt

 Here is my alteration of A. T. Russell’s translation of the Baptism hymn “Gott Vater! höre unsre Bitt” (Johannes Bornschürer, d. 1677), which appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #286. According to Wetzel it first appears in the author’s hymnal for Tann (west of Meiningen, Germany) (1676). The main problem with Russell’s translation was the lack of rhyme in the penultimate half-lines, which I have here attempted to correct. I have also changed a couple lines or phrases to bring them closer to the German.
 

 

O GOD the Father! hear our pray’r;
Now with this child Thy blessing share
And let Thy grace surround him/her.
Make him/her Thy child,
No more defiled,
And let sin never wound him/her.

2 Lord Christ, through Holy Baptism take
Him/her for Thy member, for Thy sake
Th’ inheritance supplying,
That he/she may be
E’er joined to Thee
In living and in dying.

3 And Thou, most precious Spirit, one
With God the Father and the Son,
Upon us be descending:
This child into
The cov’nant new
Receive, his/her course e’er tending.

4 O Thou most Holy Trinity!
Praise, glory, thanks we bring to Thee,
Who dost such blessing send us:
Oh, grant that we
May thus serve Thee!
From sin do Thou defend us!

Gott Vater! höre unsre Bitt,
theil diesem Kind den Segen mit,
erzeig ihm deine Gnade.
Es sei dein Kind,
   nimm weg sein Sünd,
das ihm dieselb nicht schade.

2 Herr Christe! nimm es gnädig auf.
Durch dieses Bad der heilgen Tauf
zu deinem Glied und Erben,
damit es dein
   mög allzeit sein,
im Leben und im Sterben.

3 Und du, o allerwerthster Geist!
sammt Vater und dem Sohn gepreist,
wollst gleichfalls zu uns kommen,
damit jetzund
   in deinen Bund
es werde aufgenommen.

4 O heilge Dreieinigkeit!
der sei Lob, Ehr und Dank
bereit für diese große Güte.
Gieb, daß dafür
   wir dienen dir,
vor Sünden uns behüte!
