Gerechter Gott, ach strafe nicht

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Gerechter Gott, ach strafe nicht” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, a repentance hymn appointed for Sunday at the end of the day following a devotional repentance prayer.

Mel.: Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt.

JUST God, let not my sins combined

Receive their worthy sentence!

Let me a gracious count’nance find

With honest, true repentance.
I groan and sigh with heart sincere:

O God, my gracious Maker, hear!

2 It troubles me and pains me sore

That I have thus transgressèd.

Yet I for mercy will implore

In Jesus Christ the Blessed,

Who by His blood hath rendered Thee

The price for my iniquity.

3 I will not let my Jesus go;

With Him I stand unmoving.

Thou wilt not judge me here I know,

Me in Thy Son approving.

Through Him I must be just and clean

From guilt and punishment of sin.

4 Thus troubles of the soul subside,

The conscience resteth sweetly.

My Savior by His blood hath pried

My soul from death completely.

Howe’er it may the foe distress,

I thus inherit blessedness.

5 So in this world, on evil bent,

My death gives me no sadness.

When God appoints, I am content,

And will depart with gladness.

Perhaps today I’ll take my flight:

Therefore, O world and sin, good night!

GERMAN

Gerechter Gott, ach strafe nicht

die Größe meiner Sünden.

Laß mich ein gnädig Angesicht

mit meiner Buße findn.

Mein Herze seufzet inniglich:

Gott, mein Erbarmer, höre mich!

2 Es kränkete mich, und ist mir leid,

daß ich so übertreten.

Doch will ich um Barmherzigkeit

in Christo Jesu beten,

der alle meine Missethat

dir durch sien Blut bezahlet hat.

3 Ich lasse meinen Jesum nicht.

Mit ihm will ich bestehen.

Du wirst und kannst nicht ins Gericht

mit deinem Knechte gehen.

Durch ihn muß ich gerecht und rein

von Sündenschuld und -Strafe sein.

4 So leget sich die Seelennoth,

so ruhet das Gewissen.

Mein Heiland hat aus Angst und Tod

mich durch sein Blut gerissen.

Wärs auch dem Teufel noch so leid,

so erb ich doch die Seligkeit.

5 Und weil die Welt im Argen liegt,

will ich auch gerne scheiden.

Wenns mein Gott fügt, bin ich vergnügt,

und fahre hin mit Freuden.

Vielleicht wirds heute noch vollbracht.

Drum, Welt und Sünde, gute Nacht!
