Herr, neig zu mir dein gnädigs Ohr

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Herr, neig zu mir dein gnädigs Ohr” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm LXXXVI, Inclina Domine, aurem, with title “God is gracious and faithful . . . A prayer of David” and melody assignment “Aus tiefer Noth schrei ich zu dir.” Luther says of the psalm,

It is a psalm of supplication, and title calls it a prayer of David. It is easy and clear to understand that David called on God in his distress against his enemies, who wished him dead, whether Saul, Absalom, or whoever they may be. But behold, he glorifies God richly and masterfully in His goodness, truth, and strength, that He may warm up his faith and stoke his prayer. We should do so also. The token that he desires (p. 8) is that God would finally help him, so that everyone must say, “God hath holpen him, and defended his cause against the boast of his enemies who had wronged his just estate.”

BOW down Thine ear, O Lord, to me,
And hear my supplication!
Poor and forsaken utterly,
My soul seeks preservation!
Of justice men would me defraud,
So save Thy servant, Thou my God,
That trusteth in Thee wholly.

2 Ah, Lord, be merciful to me!
I cry unto Thee daily,
Thy servant’s soul let joyful be;
I lift my soul and hail Thee,
For Thou art good, and wilt forgive;
Thy truth and mercy all receive
Who will but call upon Thee.

3 Give ear, O Lord, and hear my pray’r,
My voice of supplication;
I call on Thee and Thou art there
With help in tribulation;
There is no god like unto Thee
That worketh wonders mightily
As Thou, Lord, only doest.

4 The heathen all which Thou hast made
Shall seek Thee and adore Thee,
Thy name with glory be arrayed
When they fall down before Thee.
There is no God but Thou alone,
And Thou art great, as widely shown
By all Thy mighty wonders.

5 Teach me therefore Thy way, O Lord,
And I will keep forever
The path of truth, which is Thy Word,
Which disappointeth never.
Preserve my heart in unity,
That I may fear Thee faithfully,
And give Thy name due honor!

6 For this great good, my God and Lord,
With all my heart I praise Thee!
Now that Thy name may be adored,
A banner high I’ll raise Thee.
Great is Thy mercy shown to me;
That hast my soul most graciously
From lowest hell delivered!

7 Arisen is the haughty crowd,
Intending to dismay me;
I have no peace from tyrants proud,
They seek my soul, to slay me.
In them there is no fear of God,
Therefore with might and cunning fraud
They persecute believers.

8 But Thou, Lord, art compassionate,
Whose grace aboundeth ever,
Long-suff’ring, and of mercy great,
Unfailing is Thy favor!
Oh, Lord, have mercy, judge aright,
Unto Thy servant give Thy might,
Thine handmaid’s son assisting!

9 Make me a sign exemplary,
And good successes send me,
That they may all ashamèd be
Who see and hate with envy,
Perceiving that Thou helpest me,
And leav’st me not in misery,
But in all need consolest.
