Es ist ein Freud dem Herzen mein

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase “Es ist ein Freud dem Herzen mein” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm CXXII, Lætatus sum, with title “The land’s glory . . . A song of the higher choir” and melody assignment “Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.” A literal rendering of Becker’s rhymed thema:

When the Word of God is diligently
preached in its purity
and God is praised, honored, and glorified
in the holy congregation,
and at the same time all are treated fairly
in court, without regard for persons,
and nothing is held back,
it is the land’s glory:
God dwells therein in grace,
He multiplies His blessing,
the city retains the reputation
of having the best prize.
 Abide with us, O Lord, with Thy Word,
 protect Thy church in every place,
 defend the government in grace,
 in every part give reset and peace,
 and lastly, eternal blessedness,
 that we may Thee forever bless.

IT gives great gladness to my heart
To hear God’s confirmation
That to His house we shall depart,
To give Him adoration.
Our feet shall stand within Thy gates,
Jerusalem! My heart awaits
That hour, when we shall praise Him.

2 Jerusalem is builded fair,
O’er all the prize retaining;
To seek the Lord the tribes go there
By God the Lord’s ordaining;
There do men preach to Israel,
The wonders of the Lord they tell,
All bless His name and praise Him.

3 Here doth the glorious office stand
The throne of judgment splendid,
That fills with gladness all the land,
Here war and strife are ended;
Here stands for judgment David’s throne,
For which to God Most High alone
Let all men’s thanks be given!

4 Peace be upon Jerusalem!
The Lord in her is dwelling.
God’s blessings all abound to them
Who wish her goods excelling!
Within Thy walls forever be
God’s peace, and true prosperity
Within Thin every palace!

5 For all our brethren in the truth
I wish both peace and blessing!
May all our friends, in age and youth,
God’s goodness be possessing!
The church, she is the holy ground,
Wherein God’s house is ever found;
I’ll seek her good forever.
