Von Herzen will ich dir, o Gott

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase “Von Herzen will ich dir, o Gott” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), Psalm CVIII, Paratum cor meum, with the title “Psalm of thanksgiving, that God graciously gives His Word and helps the government with victory and blessing against the enemy.” The Ionian melody by Waldis follows the meter 877.877.88.77 (ABBACCDDEE).

O GOD, with all my heart to Thee
I will be gladly singing,
With harp and psalt’ry ringing,
Both morn and eve unceasingly,
And every middling hour,
Thank Thee with all my power,
Among the people for Thy grace
Fills heav’n and earth in every place,
Thy Word fills all creation,
With glad reverberation.

2 Lord God, Thy praise be glorified,
Thy Word free course be given
Throughout the earth and heaven,
The chosen people far and wide
Are freed from all transgression
Released from guilt’s oppression,
God speaketh in His holy place
His Word with joy and mighty praise,
On Shechem He will shower,
In Suckoth make it flower,

3 Manasseh both and Ephraim
Shall see My might and glory,
And Gilead adore Me,
My voice shall Judah hear so grim,
And Moab shal be fellèd,
And Edom be compellèd
With joy I shall lift up Mine hand
And shout upon Philistia’s land,
My Word shall fill creation
And spread to every nation.

4 Who shall conduct me to the place
Where Thy truth is asserted,
And Edom is converted?
Wilt Thou not, Lord, who now our race
With counsel dim rejectest,
And us in war neglectest?
Oh, help us fight the enemy,
For all men’s help is vanity.
Through Thee by many a wonder
We break their ranks asunder.

¶ Therefore, Lord God, with heart and hands
Our joyful off’ring giving,
We will in all our living,
Uphold Thy holy Ten Commands,
As taught by Thy good Spirit,
And seek each day to hear it.
This grant by Christ, salvation’s Ground,
That we might all in faith be found
Here when our life is ending,
And freed from weights impending.

Daß man fromm redlich Hausgesind

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase “Daß man fromm redlich Hausgesind” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CI, Misericordiam et judicium, with title “Psalm of instruction concerning godly, honest householding.” The Aeolian melody by Waldis follows the meter 847.847.84.77 (AABCCBDDEE). Heugel’s Tenor line shows some rhythmic alteration and ornamentation.

THAT servants which are found with me
May upright be,
May God bestow His blessing!
That mercy, peace, and justice may
Not fade away—
In song this theme addressing,
I will be faithful, good, and true,
And fearless too,
Lest those belonging to me
Rise up as to undo me.

2 No evil, which good men abhor,
Shall pass my door;
I hate the vile transgressor.
The wicked and perverted heart
I bid depart,
The sland’rer and disgracer.
From house and home I’ll not forestall
To cast them all,
With every proud offender,
Who will to none surrender.

3 I look about me day and night
For souls upright,
That they may near be dwelling;
Good, honest servants do I love.
But thieves reprove,
All liars far dispelling.
I crush th’ ungodly in the land,
With fearless hand,
Who shows God’s Word no favor
Must be cut of foever.

¶ Lord, by Thy Spirit’s comfort Thou
Didst me endow
With this great grace from heaven,
And by Thy Holy Word didst all
The nations call,
To keep what there is given.
I therefore give Thee thanks and praise,
And seek always
Thy Word to keep and cherish,
That I may never perish!

Es ist ein Freud dem Herzen mein

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase “Es ist ein Freud dem Herzen mein” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm CXXII, Lætatus sum, with title “The land’s glory . . . A song of the higher choir” and melody assignment “Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.” A literal rendering of Becker’s rhymed thema:

When the Word of God is diligently
preached in its purity
and God is praised, honored, and glorified
in the holy congregation,
and at the same time all are treated fairly
in court, without regard for persons,
and nothing is held back,
it is the land’s glory:
God dwells therein in grace,
He multiplies His blessing,
the city retains the reputation
of having the best prize.
 Abide with us, O Lord, with Thy Word,
 protect Thy church in every place,
 defend the government in grace,
 in every part give reset and peace,
 and lastly, eternal blessedness,
 that we may Thee forever bless.

IT gives great gladness to my heart
To hear God’s confirmation
That to His house we shall depart,
To give Him adoration.
Our feet shall stand within Thy gates,
Jerusalem! My heart awaits
That hour, when we shall praise Him.

2 Jerusalem is builded fair,
O’er all the prize retaining;
To seek the Lord the tribes go there
By God the Lord’s ordaining;
There do men preach to Israel,
The wonders of the Lord they tell,
All bless His name and praise Him.

3 Here doth the glorious office stand
The throne of judgment splendid,
That fills with gladness all the land,
Here war and strife are ended;
Here stands for judgment David’s throne,
For which to God Most High alone
Let all men’s thanks be given!

4 Peace be upon Jerusalem!
The Lord in her is dwelling.
God’s blessings all abound to them
Who wish her goods excelling!
Within Thy walls forever be
God’s peace, and true prosperity
Within Thin every palace!

5 For all our brethren in the truth
I wish both peace and blessing!
May all our friends, in age and youth,
God’s goodness be possessing!
The church, she is the holy ground,
Wherein God’s house is ever found;
I’ll seek her good forever.

Von Gnad und Recht soll singen

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Von Gnad und Recht soll singen” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm CI, Misericordiam et judicium, with title “Mirror of rulers . . . A psalm of David” and melody assignment “Hilf Gott, daß mir gelinge.” Luther writes of the psalm,

It is a psalm of instruction wherein David makes himself an example showing how good courtiers should behave and not tolerate wicked ministers. Hence he relates the faults and vices of a wicked servant which we have clarified at length in our commentary on this psalm. This is what he calls singing about grace and justice (v. 1), that is, how he is gracious to the upright and punishes the wicked. And how a servant should be active and shun evil, and how it turned out with him in that regard, he shows well in Absalom, Ahithophel, Joab, &c. For whoever would make people good and keep them so must needs invite upon him all hatred and spite. Therefore he might well sing to God and give thanks to Him, who has given him such grace and justice. For if God does not give it, such a song will remain unsung, and instead there will be utter scolding and cursing in one’s house, and at court nothing but hanging and losing heads, &c.

OF GRACE and judgment holy,
O Lord, my lips would sing;
Thy pow’r and wisdom solely
A good result can bring;
I would my matter wisely phrase
And deal with all men truly
In all my life and ways.

2 At home my conversation
Is faithful, without fraud;
I seek no occupation
That would displease my God.
I hate the works of those who turn,
Nor let them dwell beside me
Who dare God’s Word to spurn.

3 The froward, unconverted,
Must all depart from me;
I shun the heart perverted
That turns, O Lord, from Thee.
Whoso his neighbor doth betray
And with his tongue doth slander,
I cut him off straightway!

4 Those who high glances offer
And have a prideful heart,
I will as friends not suffer;
Let them from me depart!
Mine eyes with great desire shall be
On countrymen more faithful,
That they may dwell with me.

5 Those who with me are dwelling
And would my servants be
Shall never lies be telling,
But deal e’er truthfully;
My court receiveth men upright.
Deceivers shall not prosper
Nor tarry in my sight.

6 All those injustice preaching
Shall not live long with me.
Idolatry, false teaching
I cut off instantly,
That wicked doers may not gain
A foothold in the city
And in the Lord’s domain.

All Obrigkeit Gott setzet

Here is my translation of the hymn on the Estate of Authorities, “All Obrigkeit Gott setzet” (Anon., from 1657), in ELGB #377. Fischer states: “This little-disseminated hymn is found in the Hanover Gsb 1657, Bremen Gsb 1690, [with title] “Of Obligation to Authorities”, in the Schlechtiger (Berlin) hymnal 1704, Halle from 1834 on. The two closing stanzas in Halberstadt Gsb 1712ff. marked with asterisks appear to be an addition.” I offer as an alternate explanation that these are the supplicatory stanzas, whereas the foregoing are the didactic. I also find it in Stade Gsb 1682 and Crüger’s Praxis Pietatis Melica 1693. The appointed melody is “Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn.”

AUTHORITIES God giveth
As His own ordinance.
Who them not so receiveth
Awaits dread punishments.
To honor them is fitting
Who in God’s place are sitting:
Whom therefore He calls gods.

2 When in their office ever
They orders give, as right,
We to obey endeavor.
If they cause grief or fright,
They soon can be unblinded
By God, and so reminded
That they are under Him.

3 Some day at God’s commanding
They shall a reck’ning give,
Before God’s courtroom standing,
How they and theirs did live,
How they their people lovèd,
And as a shepherd provèd
To their entrusted flock.

4 Through them God us provideth
Peace, safety, and defense;
Their people free abideth
From foes’ belligerence.
So that all who would grieve us
E’en so in peace must leave us:
This is the ruler’s work.

5 To them fair tax is given,
And faithul service done;
Their office under heaven,
Upon these aids doth run;
Thus we, obedient, humble,
Do not complain or grumble,
But give them willingly.

6 Should man his service render
Alone to please the eye
(lest he be an offender)
His heart is false thereby.
That conscience though is steady,
That at all times is ready
To show them faithful love.

7 That we our rulers treasure
According to Thy Word
And do their will with pleasure,
Grant us the pow’r, O Lord!
As limbs let us be bearing
Nor fight the head, thus caring
And watching over us!

8 We thank Thee, God, for giving
Our Christian rulers dear;
Sustain them long in living,
And always in Thy fear;
Grant strength and grace to handle
Their work, that sin and scandal
May be by them repelled.

GERMAN
All Obrigkeit Gott setzet,
als seine Ordnung ein;
wer sie dafür nicht schätzet,
wird nicht ohn Strafe sein.
Man soll in Ehren halten,
die Gottes Stell verwalten,
der sie drum Götter nennt.

2 Was sie Amts halber heißen,
muß man nicht weigern sich,
Gehorsams sich befleißen;
wärn sie gleich wunderlich.
gott kann ihr Herz bald lenken,
damit sie doch bedenken,
daß sie sein unter Ihm.

3 Und daß sie von dem Leben,
was hier durch sie geschicht,
Gott Rechenschaft einst geben
dort müssen vor Gericht;
auf daß von ihnen werde
ihr anvertraute Heerde
geliebet und gepflegt.

4 Durch sie uns Gott verleihet,
Ruh, Sicherheit und Schutz:
wir sind durch sie befreiet
vor böser Leute Trutz.
Das alle, die uns hassen,
zu Fried uns dennoch lassen,
das schafft die Obrigkeit.

5 Daher ihr auch gebühret
Schoß, Schatzung, Dienst und Pflicht:
denn was ihr Amt mitführet,
durch solches wird verrichtt;
und soll mans auf Begehren,
ohn Murren und Beschwerden,
entrichten williglich.

6 Wenn man zu Dienst nur stehet
vor Augen und zum Schein;
(das man der Straf entgehet)
da ist das Herz nicht rein.
Der hat ein gut Gewissen,
der stets dahin beflissen,
das er die Obern liebt.

[*]7 Ach, Herr, verleih uns Allen,
das wir nach Deinem Wort,
den Obern zu gefallen,
sein willig immerfort;
daß wir als treue Glieder,
dem Haupt nicht sein zuwider,
das für uns sorgt und wacht.

[*]8 Gott, der du uns gegeben
christliche Obrigkeit,
erhalt sie lang im leben
und Deiner Furcht allzeit.
Gieb ihnen Kraft und Gnade,
daß Sünde, Schand und Shade
durch sie werd abgewandt.

O heilige Dreieinigkeit

Here is my translation of the citizen/estate hymn, “O heilige Dreieinigkeit” (Ämilie Juliane, Countess of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, d. 1706), from Ev.-luth. Gsb #573, originally appearing in the authoress’s Tägliches Morgen- Mittags- und Abend-Opffer (1685, 1699) with the title “[Hymn] of a subject.” The original has 7 stanzas, though most hymnals took upon only 3 stanzas, yet the whole hymn is found in Schöber’s Liedersegen (1769). The appointed melody is “Erhalt uns, Herr.”

WE pray Thee, Holy Trinity,
Keep our dear rulers faithfully,
Whom Thou hast with a father’s hand
Caused in this good estate to stand.

2 Thy Spirit guide them safely through,
And ever bless whate’er they do,
That they may govern prudently
Both Christian land and polity:

[3 Let them increase in health always,
Theirs be long life, and Thine the praise;
Preserve them from adversity,
Bestow success continually:]

4 That under them we may enjoy
A peaceful life without annoy,
And with them, Mighty Lord, some day,
In heav’n hereafter come to stay.

[5 God, let Thine eye their needs perceive,
And help that we both morn and eve
May on our rulers due bestow
The fitting debt that subjects owe.

6 To Thee true love and praise and fear,
A heart obedient and sincere,
And to our dear authorities,
Pray’r, praise, love, service, as Thee please.

7 Prepare us only for Thine own,
And be our Sun and Shield alone,
Our soul and body to delight,
And then to bring to glory bright.]

GERMAN
1 O heilige Dreieinigkeit,
erhalt uns unsre Obrigkeit,
die deine treue Vaterhand
gesetzet selbst in diesen Stand.

2 Dein guter Geist sie leit und führ,
und segne ihr Thun für und für,
daß sie voll Weisheit und Verstand
regiere christlich Leut und Land.

*3 Laß sie gesund zu deiner Ehr
und ihre Lebensjahre mehr,
all Unglück treib von ihr zurück
und gib ihr Glücke über Glück.

4 Damit wir führen unter ihr
ein still geruhig Leben hier,
und dermaleinst mit ihr, mein Hort,
bestehen wohl in Himmel dort.

*5 Ach Gott! dein Auge seh auf sie,
und hilf, daß wir auch spät und früh
dir erst, darnach der Obrigkeit,
abstatten unsre Schuldigkeit.

*6 Dir, wahre Liebe, Lob und Furcht,
ein Herze, das dir gern gehorcht:
Der Obrigkeit, wie dirs gefällt,
Gebet, Lob, Ehre, Dienst und Geld.

*7 Bereite uns nur, wie du willt,
und sei du unser Sonn und Schild,
der unser Leib und Seel ergötz,
und künftig uns zu Ehren setz.

Capitan, Herr Gott, Vater mein

Here is my translation of “Margrave Casimir's Hymn” ("Capitan, Herr Gott, Vater mein" Casimir zu Brandenburg, †1527), a devout prayer of godly rulers for assistance, with various petitions and sighs, including intercession for their subjects and territories. It was included in several of the earliest Lutheran hymnals. Note that the original acrostic of the author's name (CA-SI-MIR, MAR-GRAF ZU BRAN-DEN-BURG) is reproduced in the English translation (marked in bold typeface). For more information, see Robin A Leaver, The Whole Church Sings. (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2017). The melody as it appears early on (in the 1530 Leipzig Enchiridion):

In Zahn’s Melodies #8133:

CAPTAIN and Father God on high!
With grace be nigh
While yet my days on earth proceed

For now what error meets my eye!
Thy grace supply,
And let Thy sense and wisdom lead;
To me the true ground, Lord, unfold,
Behold,
This is the hour of need!
Thy godly Word let not depart;
Thou art
Life’s Door through death decreed,
My only Lord and God indeed.

2 Since nears the hour of prophecy,
Lord, set us free
From evil here in body_and soul,
In this distress our Helper be,
And graciously
Transport us from all torments whole!
Upon us all shed mercy’s light;
Unite
Us, Lord, through Thy dear Son
That we may all true Christians be;
My plea
Is that Thy peace be known;
Help us to do Thy will alone!

3 Mid such distresses I must pray,
Lord, be my Stay!
My Maker, ne’er from me depart!
Thy counsel e’er to me convey
Point me the way,
And through Thy Son stir up my heart;
Renew me by Thy Holy Ghost!
Thou know’st
All that I need from Thee;
For all my hope in Thee I place.
Grant grace,
O Christ, and comfort me,
Thou only my Redeemer be.

4 Realm, city, town, and subject free
All come from Thee;

Oh, keep them from all doctrines wrong!
See, Lord, what follies now enthrall
And truth forestall!
Preserve us in Thy honor long,
With us Thy Holy Scripture share,
Lest e’er
The devil us require
To quit for pomp and human might;
Ignite
Within us such desire,
That true faith burns with holy fire!

5 Mark how I now my retinue
And servants, too,
And nobles, Lord, to Thee commend!
Increase in us right faith and true
Which now men rue;
Lord, for Thy death my pray’r attend!
Forsake us not in anguish fast,
Thou hast
So long ago expressed,
That wolvish prophets would by guile
Defile
Thy flock, in sheepksin dressed,
As Scripture clearly doth attest.

6 Grave-eyed Thy mercy have I sought,
Which once Thee brought
To bear the cross for mankind’s fall.
I come, Thy refuge long I've sought
Forsake me not!
Thy goodly cov’nant I recall
Which Thou didst make so long ago.
For lo,
The many seek Thy face;
Lord, hear their voices as they grieve;
Receive
Us all into Thy grace;
To erring faith permit no place!

7 Of branded consciences, which fain

Would others stain,
The words of Paul in earnest warn:
To twist Thy doctrine much they strain,
Their shame is plain;
Lord, save us by Thy blood and scorn!
Look down to us from heaven’s throne:
The Son
Hath paid our debt of sin.
To Thee Christ brings us all;
As Paul

Says time and time again;
Lord, in Thy favor keep all men!

8 Entreating Thee, we humbly pray
For faith today
Before death’s hand is here discerned;
Our hope doth on Thy mercy stay
With longing aye!
Alas, we were by cunning turned,
Lord, from Thy grace to works of men!
Grant then,
O Lord, the strength that we
May hope and trust Thy Word both here
And there,
Which is true verity—
And grant us life eternally!

9 Burglars and sinners turn, O God
Thy name to laud,
And in Thy kingdom all unite!
Be with us, lest the foe defraud

By courses broad;
Hide not Thy gracious face from sight;
When comes that dire necessity,
And we
Death’s cold embrace must bear,
Then be our trusty shield and sword!
Yea, Lord,
Thou wilt receive our pray’r!
I send my subjects to Thy care!

1 CApitan, Herr Gott, Vater mein
dein Gnad erschein
mir weil ich hie im Leben bin,
Denn itzt auf Erd groß Irrtum sein
Sieh gnädig drein,
daß mich regier dein Gnad und Sinn,

Verhalt mir nicht dein Göttlichs Wort,
die Port

bist du allein mein Herr und Gott.

2 SIch naht die Zeit der Prophezei,
Herr, mach uns frei
des Übels hie an Leib und Seel,
Steh uns in unsern Nöten bei,
dein Gnad verleih
erlös uns, Herr, von aller Quäl;
Erbarm dich unser allgemein,

daß wir rechte Christen sein,

Hilf, daß wir all dein Willen tun.

3 MIR ist vonnöten, daß ich bitt,
verlaß micht nit,

Auch teil mir hie dein Weisheit mit,
nicht von mir tritt,
durch Christum mir mein Herz anrühr,
Und schaff in mir ein rechten Geist,
du weißt,
was mir vonnöten ist,
all mein Hoffnung hab ich zu dir,
komm mir
zu Trost, Herr Jesu Christ,
nur du allein Erlöser bist.

4 MARk, Städt und all mein Untertan,
ich von dir han,
behüt sie all vor falscher Lehr,
Herr Gott, es ist itzt auf der Bahn
ein böser Wahn,
enthalt uns all in deiner Ehr,
dein Göttlichs Wort das teil uns mit,
daß nit

daß unser Glaub sei recht zu dir.

5 GRAFen, Herrn, Ritter und Knecht,

ich bitt dich, Herr, durch deinen Tod,
verlaß uns nicht in solcher Angst;
vor langst

daß falsch Propheten sollten sein
in Schein

Sankt Paulus mannigfalt,
In deiner Gnad uns all enthalt.

8 DEN Glauben bittn wir, Herr, von dir,
erhör uns schier
eh uns des Todes Fall berührt,
in dein Erbarmung hoffen wir
in treuer Gier,
ach, Herr wir sind kläglich verführt
von deiner Gnad in eigen Werk,
drum stärk
uns, Herr, daß wir in dich
hoffen und trauwen hie und dort,
dein Wort,
ist Wahrheit sicherlich,
gib uns das Leben ewiglich.

9 BURGrecht gib uns in deinem Reich
