Kinder, die ihr Christi Glieder

Here is my translation of the hymn “Kinder, die ihr Christi Glieder [Brüder]” (Christian Friedrich Henrici, aka Picander, d. 1764), from Ev.-Luth. Gsb # 485, first noted in Gottschald’s Theologia in hymnis (1737), where, perhaps erroneously, “Brüder” appears in both lines 1 and 3 of the 1st stanza. The title there is: “On  righteousness and unrighteousness toward one’s neighbor.” Regarding the ascription to Henrici, Fischer, who attributes no author, notes the cipher “H.” but fails, in the discussion of this hymn, to connect that to Henrici (whose other hymns, e.g. “Mein Herr und Gott, wie soll ich dich,” “Gott, wie liebst du deine Kinder,” “Was bin ich, großer Gott, ein Bau” in that hymnal are so marked), only noting that it was erroneously (and “astonishingly”) taken as (Conrad) Hubert, the famous Reformation-era author of “Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ.” Yet elsewhere Fischer knows the meaning of this “H” (e.g., under the entry: “Mein Gott, die Arbeit meiner Hände”). This erroneous ascription to Hubert is seen in the Wisc. hymnal as well. The author, Henrici, is known as the writer of many Bach cantatas in Leipzig from 1725 on. The appointed melody is “Freu dich sehr, O meine Seele.”

 

CHILDREN joined in Christ your Brother,
Who God’s image true possess:
Let your life with another
Shine with Christian righteousness;
All unto your neighbor do
As ye’d have him do to you;
This the Savior doth provide us,
Wisely in our life to guide us.

2 Brethren, seek to serve each other
With your gifts by God instilled,
Who desires no selfish brother
Nor a tree that will not yield.
Help each other in the cross,
Caring not for gain or loss;
Give and aid, this thought retaining:
That all comes from God’s ordaining.

3 Be as doves, dissembling never;
Help your brother in his need;
Let your every least endeavor
From a faith unfeigned proceed;
Nurture trust and confidence,
One in heart and mind and sense,
Hoping, thinking, and desiring
E’er the best, in love untiring.

4 Cause no man your heart to chasten
As aloof or merciless;
To forgiveness ever hasten
And be slow to bitterness.
Kindly to your neighbor show,
If some wrong of his ye know,
That his mind may be persuaded
By a word with grace pervaded.

5 Let us keep from criticizing
When we others’ faults perceive;
In our mind our sins reprising,
Whereat we must surely grieve.
Jesus’ words remember we:
“Judge not, lest ye judgèd be,”
Lest we in our earthly station
Fall beneath God’s condemnation.

6 Seek the good of one another,
Bless, oh, bless, and curse ye not;
With His blood our Lord and Brother
Hath our one redemption wrought.
And one Father gives us bread;
And, when death will bow our head,
There is one eternal heaven
To the righteous number given.

7 God most High, bestow the glorious
Robe of holy righteousness;
For the Lamb’s high feast before us
Fit us with the snow-white dress.
Righteous make Thy Christendom;
Say: “O faithful servant, come!
Come, I will with joy embrace thee,
And o’er many things will place thee!”

Kinder, die ihr Christi Glieder […Brüder]
und nach Gottes Bilde seid,
übet gegen eure Brüder
christliche Gerechtigkeit;
meint es mit dem Nächten gut,
wie ihr wollt, daß man euch thut:
diese Lehre, so zu leben,
hat der Heiland uns gegeben. [hat Gott und Natur…]

2 Dient einander mit den Gaben,
welche Gott in euch gelegt;
denn den Baum will Gott nicht haben,
welcher keine Früchte trägt.
Helft einander aus dem Kreuz,
sonder Eigennutz und Geiz.
Gebt und rathet, und gedenket
daß euch Alles Gott geschenket.

3 Ohne Falsch, gleichwie die Tauben, […als wie…]
sucht einander beizustehn,
und aus ungefärbtem Glauben
lasset eure Werke gehn.
Habt Vertrauen unter euch,
seid am Sinn einander gleich,
haltet an der Liebe feste,
denkt und hoffet stets das Beste.

4 Lasset über euch nicht schreien,
daß ihr unversöhnlich seid,
seid begierig zum Verzeihen,
langsam zu der Bitterkeit;
sprecht den Nächsten freundlich an,
hat er was nicht recht gethan, [etwan hat ers nicht…]
und gewinnet sein Gemüthe
selbst mit Freundlichkeit und Güte.

5 Lasset uns nicht übel sprechen,
wenn wir Andrer Mängel sehn;
denkt, wir haben auch Gebrechen,
die uns wieder können schmähn.
Höret, was der Heiland spricht:
richtet und verdammet nicht,
daß wir nicht noch hier auf Erden
selbst vor Gott verwerflich werden.

6 Gönnt einander alles Gute
segnet, und verfluchet nicht;
Christus hat mit seinem Blute
Éin Erlösung aufgericht,
und éin Vater giebt uns Brod;
unsre Zeit beschließt der Tod,
und éin Himmel ist dort oben
den Gerechten aufgehoben.

7 Höchster! schmück uns mit dem Kleide
heiliger Gerechtigkeit;
mach uns zu der ewgen Freude, […weißen Seide]
zu des Lammes Mahl bereit;
mach uns hier und dort gerecht;
sprich einst: du getreuer Knecht,
komm, ich will dich hier ergötzen
und dich über Viele setzen.
