Mein Jesus ist der gute Hirt

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Mein Jesus ist der gute Hirt” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Misericordias Domini. The melody there indicated, “Wenn Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält” (with note: “The last [part of] the melody is repeated”) seems unsatisfactory, especially since the meter is supported by the well-known chorale, “Was mein Gott will, das gscheh allzeit.” This is a repeated problem in the book, and is perhaps the result of an inept editor.

The question of authorship here arises, since Fischer/Tümpel (Das deutsche ev. Kirchenlied…, 1911, vol 5, p. 571) gives the text under the Fruitbearing Society member, “Der Spate,” Caspar Stieler (1632–1707) from his book INI Jesus-Schall und Wiederhall… (1684), notably later than Olearius’s publication. However, the editor notes, “The foregoing melody, ‘Es ist das Heil’ does not fit; the correct one is ‘Was mein Gott will…’ — Whether Stieler composed the above hymn and the following is uncertain.”) Here we can safely ascribe the authorship to Olearius, and simultaneously find confirmation of the melodic problem, no doubt arising from an incautious editor, and its solution.
