Here is my translation of the hymn, “Herr Jesu, der du deinen Hauf” (B. Ringwaldt, 1582), from the author’s Evangelia, the post-Gospel prayer hymn for Trinity XIV from Luke 17.
Mel.: Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält.
LORD Jesus, who hast graciously
by Word and Font and Spirit
Set free Thy flock from leprosy
Of sin, which we inherit
And more than this, dost every day
Such mercies unto us display,
They cannot all be numbered!
2 Grant us as Christians pure to be
In word and deed and living,
And without all hypocrisy
To walk in Thy thanksgiving,
And never like those other nine
To leave Thee, nor Thy help divine
And grace to leave forgotten!
3 But help us, that we ever here,
Amid life’s woes unruly,
With this Samaritan appear
Before Thine eyes all-holy,
And like good sheep, when chast’nings sore
Have been removed, live all the more
In true, heartfelt repentance.
4 Make do, Lord, with our Gratias,
Which we in exile sing Thee,
Till we at last to glory pass,
And better off’rings bring Thee,
And with the holy angels corps
Thee, very God of heav’n, adore
With all our strength and power.

GERMAN
Herr Jesu, der du deinen Hauf
vom Aussatz aller Sünden
durch dein Wort, Geist und Wassertauf
genädig hast entbunden,
und über das sonst alle Tag,
welchs man nicht all erzählen mag
uns gar viel Guts erzeigest.
2 Gib, daß wir als die Christen rein,
in Wort, That und Gebärden,
auch gegen dir ohn Heuchelschein
dankbar erfunden werden,
und nicht als jene neun gethan,
dich nach erlangter Hülf verlahn,
und deiner Gnad vergessen.
3 Sondern hülf, daß wir immerdar
in diesem Leben bitter
für deine heilig Augen klar
mit diesem Samariter
erscheinen, und wie fromme Schaf
uns nach der aufgehobnen Straf
zu wahrer Buß begeben.
4 Nimm hie vorlieb das Gratias,
so wir im Elend singen,
bis wirs einmal dort werden baß
bei dir zuwegen bringen,
und mit den heilgen Engeln gleich
dich, wahren Gott im Himmelreich,
von allen Kräften preisen. Amen.
