Here is my translation of the hymn, “Welchs ist das beste Menschen Werk” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598) from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, one of 8 hymns for Trinity XII, with title “Of that work of love of those who bring the speechless man to the Lord Christ.”
WHICH is the greatest human work
By which true love men clearly mark
Shown to the neighbor in distress
With faith in God, who will bless? Kyrieleis!
2 It is to take the neighbor’s part,
And bring him with a trusting heart
To Christ, and in His pow’r believe,
Since we ourselves cannot save. Kyrieleis!
3 To pray to Christ for everyone,
By faith assured He is God’s Son,
Before whom troubles cannot stand,
When on us He lays His hand. Kyrieleis!
4 This is true love’s true labor sure.
If one gave all things to the poor
And yet from Jesus far remained,
What would at last be obtained? Kyrieleis!
5 To be with Christ alone, I deem,
Though it may not a glory seem
Nor wise men of the world impress,
’Twill help us from all distress. Kyrieleis!
6 Oh, let us help those far and near
Who still from Jesus wander here,
And like the deaf and dumb God’s Word
Have not in truth known or heard. Kyrieleis!
7 Who will not seek this as he can,
Though he be called a Christian man,
Ne’er thought how wretched ’twere, to be
Without God eternally. Kyrieleis!
8 Ah, that I soon might leave behind
Earth’s joys adored by mortals blind,
And gaze at Christ—that gladdens me
Now and all eternity! Kyrieleis!

GERMAN
Welchs ist das beste Menschen Werk
daraus man rechte Liebe merk
gegen dem Nächsten in der Noth
in wahrem Glaube zu Gott? Kyrieleis!
2 Sich seiner also nehmen an,
weil man ihm selbs nicht helfen kann,
daß er zu Christo werd gebracht
im Glaube an seine Macht. Kyrieleis!
was würde draus endlich werdn? Kyrieleis!
5 Allein beim Herren Christo sein,
obs wohl nicht hat ein großen Schein,
für klugen Menschen dieser Welt,
aus allen Nöthen uns hilft. Kyrieleis!
6 O lasset uns der nehmen an,
die noch fern hin und wieder gahn,
als taub und stumm nie recht gehort,
oder bekannt Gottes Wort, Kyrieleis!
7 Wer sich des nicht herzlich befleißt,
ob er schon Christianus heißt,
hat er doch nie bedacht die Noth
ewig zu sein ohne Gott. Kyrieleis!
8 Ach bald von allem kommen fern,
was je der Mensch lieb hat auf Erdn,
Christum zu schauen, das bring Freud
heut und in all Ewigkeit. Kyrieleis!
