Christus sich zu sein Jüngern wand

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Christus sich zu sein Jüngern wand” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity XIII, on the Gospel from Luke 10, with title: “Of the blessedness of Christ’s disciples.”

Mel.: Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.

CHRIST to His foll’wers turned in love,

A private word addressing 

(For so the Lord of heav’n above

Delights beyond expressing

In us on earth)—the Father’s Son,

Whom all things as their Ruler own—

He said to His disciples:

2 “Blest without measure are the eyes

That see with sight unclouded

What now ye see, the rarest prize

Among earth’s nations crowded!

But this I say, and truly know,

That kings and seers since long ago

Oft wished for such a vision.”

3 “They longed to see what now ye see,

But sight was granted never;

Their ears as well yearned eagerly

To hear some sound whatever,

Of what to you now soundeth clear,

To bear in heart that utt’rance dear,

And never did they hear it.”

4 So doth our Lord Christ glorify

Those eyes and ears as blessed

Above all holy things and high

That ever pow’r possessèd

From Adam even to His day:

The greatest blessedness alway

It is to see and hear Him.

5 What good in ancient times befell

The patriarchs victorious,

And prophets, blest of old to dwell

Among those monarchs glorious—

However great and grand they be,

It matters not—for here ye see

Of grace divine the fullness!

6 Here Christ, true Man and God’s true Son,

Is shown to sight and hearing,

In words expressed and wonders done!

Lord, grant that vision cheering

And gladsome sound to every place

That all may blessedness embrace!

This all Thy faithful pray Thee.

Christus sich zu sein Jüngern wand

insonderheit zu reden,

der in dem Himmel ist bekannt,

hat Lust zu uns auf Erden,

des himmelischen Vaters Sohn

dem alle Ding sind unterthan

der sprach zu seinen Jüngern.

2 Selig sind über alle Maß

die Augen, so da sehen,

was ihr jetzt seht ohn Unterlaß

vor ist es nie geschehen:

Ich sag, was ich mit Wahrheit weiß,

manch König und Prophet mit Fleiß

hats oft gewünscht zu sehen.

3 Was euch jetzt sichtlich widerfährt

und hat es nicht gesehen:

Ihr Ohren haben auch begehrt

offenetlich zu vernehmen,

was euch jetzt mündlich wird gesagt,

daß ihrs gefaßt im Herzen tragt,

und habens nie gehöret.

4 Also preist unser Herre Christ

Augen und Ohren selig,

übr alles, was gewesen ist,

für ihm mächtig und heilig,

von Adam bis auf seine Zeit;

das ist die größte Seligkeit,

ihn selbs sehen und hören.

5 Was guts zuvor ist widerfahrn

den theuren Patriarchen

auch den Propheten, so vor Jahrn

gelebt mit den Monarchen

es sei wie groß es immer wöll,

so wägts doch nichts, hier ist die Füll

der göttlichen Genaden.

6 Hier läßt sich selbs sehen und hörn

mit seinem Werk und Worte

Christ, Gottes Sohn, wahrr Mensch geborn;

Herr, laß an allem Orte

gesehen und gehöret werdn,

zur Seligkeit nichts mehr begehrn

die Rechtgläubigen alle.
