Psalm LIV.
¶ It is a psalm of supplication against the persecutors who seek the life of the godly because of God’s Word. It first prays for help, justice, and vengeance against those men, and for gracious hearing and fatherly protection anddeliverance, but bemoans the ungodly’s hostile defiance, power, and scorn. However, it also give the comfort of divine grace and presence, and prophesies the downfall and destruction of His enemies. Finally, it promises all obedient gratitude.
Pius afflictus. [The godly afflicted.]
The righteous man hath many a foe,
Which makes him persecution know,
But God the righteous doth attend
And brings th’ ungodly to an end.
Mel.: Mag ich Unglück nicht widerstahn.
GOD, save me by Thy name, I pray!
Be Thou my stay,
Just in my cause declare me
By Thy tremendous strength and pow’r;
Help me this hour!
Arise, to vengeance bear me!
My pray’r, God, hear / and in Thine ear
Let every word / be swiftly heard,
Awake to aid and spare me!
2 Proud strangers now against me rise
With furious eyes,
Since justly I deplore them,
Oppressors seek my soul to take,
My faith to shake,
And set not God before them
But help He gives, / My soul yet lives,
Upheld from dust. / Who in Him trust—
Such blessings dwelleth o’er them.
3 All evil to my foes the Lord
Shall well reward,
And earnestly repay them.
And in His truth shall cut them off,
Who once did scoff,
And fitting payment weigh them.
That day is near / when I shall hear
Right joyfully / the vengeance He
Shall bring, and sore dismay them.
4 A sacrifice I then will bring
And freely sing,
My God’s due praise reciting,
And thank the Lord’s excelling name
With great acclaim,
Who vict’ry gave by fighting
My every foe / that threatened so,
Deliv’ring me / all joyfully:
Of this I’ll sing, delighting!

GERMAN
Hilf mir, Gott, durch den Namen dein,
nimm dich an mein,
schaff mir Recht in mein Sachen!
Durch dein herrlich Macht und Gewalt,
Herr, hilf mir bald,
steh auf, führ mich zur Rache.
Erhör mein Gbet, / so ich thu stet,
mein Red vernimm, / meins Mundes Stimm,
zu helfen mir aufwache.
2 Der Stolze setzt sich wider mich,
ganz grimmiglich,
Amen.
