Welchs ist das beste Menschen Werk

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Welchs ist das beste Menschen Werk” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598) from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, one of 8 hymns for Trinity XII, with title “Of that work of love of those who bring the speechless man to the Lord Christ.”

Mel.: Dies sind die heilgen zehn Gebot.

WHICH is the greatest human work

By which true love men clearly mark

Shown to the neighbor in distress

With faith in God, who will bless?  Kyrieleis!

2 It is to take the neighbor’s part,

And bring him with a trusting heart

To Christ, and in His pow’r believe,

Since we ourselves cannot save. Kyrieleis!

3 To pray to Christ for everyone,

By faith assured He is God’s Son,

Before whom troubles cannot stand,

When on us He lays His hand. Kyrieleis!

4 This is true love’s true labor sure.

If one gave all things to the poor

And yet from Jesus far remained,

What would at last be obtained? Kyrieleis!

5 To be with Christ alone, I deem,

Though it may not a glory seem

Nor wise men of the world impress,

’Twill help us from all distress. Kyrieleis!

6 Oh, let us help those far and near

Who still from Jesus wander here,

And like the deaf and dumb God’s Word

Have not in truth known or heard. Kyrieleis!

7 Who will not seek this as he can,

Though he be called a Christian man,

Ne’er thought how wretched ’twere, to be

Without God eternally. Kyrieleis!

8 Ah, that I soon might leave behind

Earth’s joys adored by mortals blind,

And gaze at Christ—that gladdens me

Now and all eternity! Kyrieleis!

Welchs ist das beste Menschen Werk

daraus man rechte Liebe merk

gegen dem Nächsten in der Noth

in wahrem Glaube zu Gott? Kyrieleis!

2 Sich seiner also nehmen an,

weil man ihm selbs nicht helfen kann,

daß er zu Christo werd gebracht

im Glaube an seine Macht. Kyrieleis!

was würde draus endlich werdn? Kyrieleis!

5 Allein beim Herren Christo sein,

obs wohl nicht hat ein großen Schein,

für klugen Menschen dieser Welt,

aus allen Nöthen uns hilft. Kyrieleis!

6 O lasset uns der nehmen an,

die noch fern hin und wieder gahn,

als taub und stumm nie recht gehort,

oder bekannt Gottes Wort, Kyrieleis!

7 Wer sich des nicht herzlich befleißt,

ob er schon Christianus heißt,

hat er doch nie bedacht die Noth

ewig zu sein ohne Gott. Kyrieleis!

heut und in all Ewigkeit. Kyrieleis!

Wir preisen deine Gütigkeit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wir preisen deine Gütigkeit” (B. Ringwaldt, 1568), from the author’s Evangelia, the post-Gospel prayer hymn for Trinity IX.

Mel.: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.

WE praise Thy gracious ways, O Lord,

In all Thy gifts excelling,

Upon us by Thy bounty poured
Who in this time are dwelling.

Grant, that as faithful stewards we

May use Thy goods e’er faithfully,

And not for ostentation.

2 Grant that we may not with the world

Be drawn to greed ensnaring,

But often, from a purse unfurled,

With needy souls be sharing.

And chiefly, with an open hand

(As best we may) within our land

Support Thy Word so precious.

3 If our accounting short should fall

(Which grant may happen never!)

Write “Paid in full” because of all

Thy burden, by Thy favor;

As truly hath been done by Thee,

Who as our holy Surety

Hast paid our debts completely.

4 Our selves we in Thy merits lay,

And trust Thy wounds, dear Savior,

In which we comfort find today

And gain both now and ever,

And will with all sincerity

In works and words show thanks to Thee

As much as we are able.

5 Help us all mindful mortals be,

And think of our salvation,

Despising earthly vanity

With all its affectation,

And, using that as need requires,

In heaven’s bread find our desires

Fulfiled, and greatest quick’ning.

GERMAN

Wir preisen deine Gütigkeit

in allen deinen Gaben,

die wir, Herr, Christ, in dieser Zeit

von dir empfangen haben.

Gib, daß wir als getreue Knecht,

mit deinem Gut haushalten recht,

und nicht damit stolzieren.

2 Verleih, daß wir nicht mit der Welt

uns lan den Geiz bestricken,

sondern bisweil von unserm Geld

den Armen auch was schicken,

und sonderlich nach unser Hand

dein liebes Wort im Vaterland

mit Unterhalt versorgen.

3 Wo uns die Rechnung fehlen würd,

wie keinmal mag verbleiben,

so wollst du wegen deiner Bürd

für uns ein Dedit schreiben,

wie du denn zwar schon hast gethan,

und als ein Bürg und frommer Mann

all unser Schuld bezahlet.

4 Wir lassen uns auf dein Verdienst,

und trauen deinen Wunden.

In welchen wir Torst und Gewinnst

erfinden alle Stunden,

und wolln dir gern von Herzen rein,

als viel wir mögen, dankbar sein

mit Werken und mit Worten.

5 Hilf, daß wir unser Seligkeit

für allem wohl betrachten,

und die vergänglich Eitelkeit

mit ihrem Schein verachten,

derselb nur brauchen als zur Noth,

und an dem lieben Himmelbrot,

die best Erquickung haben. Amen.

Was rühmt man sich des Namens viel?

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Was rühmt man sich des Namens viel?” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne Geistliche Lieder, hymn CXXII, one of several hymns for Trinity VIII, with title “Of those who enter into the kingdom of heaven, or not.”

Mel.: O lux beata Trinitas.

WHY boast men greatly in a name?

Christ Jesus wants no false acclaim

From empty lips, whose ceaseless cry

“Lord, Lord!” assails His gate on high.

2 Not all who thusly call and shout

And make a pious show without

To heaven go as God’s elect:

Like actions must the words reflect.

3 Saith Jesus Christ, God’s very Son:

“They who My Father’s will alone

Perform, shall heaven’s kingdom see,

And joy with Me eternally.”

4 The Father’s will is in His Word

made manifest; that must be heard,

And in the heart received in faith,

And life in love lived as it saith.

5 Who otherwise believes and lives

Himself to God’s displeasure gives,

Though angel-like on earth he dwell,

He falls from heaven into hell.

6 From such a fall defend us, Lord!

Thy doctrine’s light to us afford,

Us in Thy Father’s will employ,

That we may hail Thy throne with joy.

spricht Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn,

werden allein in Himmel gehn,

mit mir ewige Freude sehn.

4 Des Vaters Will ist in seim Wort

ganz offenbart, das muß gehort,

das muß im Herzen sein gegläubt,

und in der Lieb darnach gelebt.

5 Wer anders gläubt, und anders lebt,

wider den Willen Gottes strebt,

wenn er sich auch gleich englisch stellt

zur Höllen aus dem Himmel fällt.

6 Vor solchem Fall behüt uns, Herr,

laß uns vorleuchten deine Lehr,

daß wir deins Vaters Willen thun,

fröhlich bestehn vor deinem Thron. Amen.

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Gott ist mein Licht, der Herr mein Heil” (P. Gerhardt, 1652), a paraphrase of Psalm 27. This translation is a revised form of that created in 2008 for the Gerhardt Hymn Project. While a proper tune appeared in 1652, Riegel’s collection of Gerhardt’s hymns from 1682, appointing the metrical psalm for Epiphany V, assigns the melody “Es ist das Heil.”

Mel.: Gott ist mein Licht, der Herr mein Heil.
Or: Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.

GOD is my light, the Lord alone
Remaineth my salvation,
He is the strength to which I run
For life and consolation.
Of what then shall I be afraid?
And who in all that God hath made
Can ever truly harm me?

2 When I must face the wicked horde,
That would my flesh devour,
They stumble soon before the Lord
And fall before His power.
Yea, though a mighty host arise,
Surrounding me with hostile cries,
My God can soon defeat them.

3 One thing do I desire, and pray
God would to me be giving:
That with my Lord I ever may
Within His house be living,
And all my days, world without end,
Within His holy temple spend,
And with the saints enjoy Him!

4 There would I see my heart’s delight
In rend’ring service ever,
And singing how in every plight
He was my great Deliv’rer;
For wisely hath He sheltered me
In His pavilion secretly,
Upon a rock-foundation.

5 So will He wisely all supply,
And still with might preceed me;
He will defend me, and on high
In peaceful places lead me.
Now shall mine head eternally
Above the boasting enemy
Be lifted up in glory.

6 Therefore I will with gladness bring
To God my heart’s oblation;
And in His tabernacle sing
A hymn of exaltation;
I’ll offer Him my thanks and praise,
Before the people anthems raise
With all my mind and power.

7 O Lord, my God, hear when I cry
And groan within my spirit;
In grace receive my pray’r on high,
And in Thy mercy hear it!
My heart abides, O precious Lord,
Devoted to Thy faithful Word:
“Seek ye My face” Thou saidest.

8 I seek Thee now! Oh, show me grace,
Nor for my sins reward me!
But since, O Lord, I seek Thy face,
That blessed sight afford me!
Thy servant put Thou not away,
For Thou hast been my help and stay
And art my sole salvation.

9 My father, mother, and all men
To whom I may betake me
Are mortals, and times may come when
In weakness they forsake me.
By all the world my heart is rent,
But God shall take me to His tent,
Where I find all abundance.

10 Lord, make my pathway plain and clear
And in Thy grace support me,
And keep me to Thy bosom near,
That never foe may hurt me.
For ’gainst me speaketh many a man
Such witness false, as never can
In ages long be proven.

11 My heart faints not, but firm within
I persevere, believing
I shall behold God’s goodness in
The land of all the living.
Come then, take heart, good courage show!
Whoe’er in faith with God will go
Will surely claim the vict’ry.

Das ich erwählet habe;
Er ist die Kraft, dahin ich eil
Und meine Seele labe.
Was will ich mich doch fürchten nun?
Und wer kann mir doch Schaden tun
Auf dieser ganzen Erden?

2 Wann mich die böse Rott anfällt
Und mein Fleisch will verschlingen,
So kann sie dieser starke Held
Gar leicht zu Boden bringen.
Wann sich auch gleich ein ganzes Heer
Legt um mich her, was ists denn mehr?

An seinen Diensten sehen
Und rühmen, wie zur bösen Zeit
Mir so viel Guts geschehen,
Da er mich fleißig hat verdeckt
In seiner Hütten und versteckt
In einem starken Felsen.

5 Und also wird er ferner noch
Mich wissen zu regieren;
Er wird mich schützen und sehr hoch
In sichre Örter führen;
Mein Haupt wird über meine Feind
Ob sie gleich hoch erhaben seind,
Allzeit erhöhet bleiben.

6 Dafür will ich denn wiederum
Gott auf das best erhöhen;
Sein Ruhm soll in dem Heiligtum
Aus meinem Munde gehen;

Und seufz in meinem Sinne;
Gib, daß mein Bitten kräftig sei[255]
Und dein Herz eingewinne.
Mein Herz hält dir, o treuer Hort,

9 Mein Vater, Mutter und was hier
Sonst ist von guten Leuten,
Das ist zu schwach und können mir
Nicht treten an die Seiten.
Ich bin entsetzt von aller Welt,
Gott aber nimmt mich in sein Zelt,
Da find ich alle Gnüge.

10 Herr, mache mir gerade Bahn,
Halt mich in deiner Gnade
Und nimm dich meiner herzlich an,
Daß mir kein Feind nicht schade;
Denn viel die reden wider mich
Und zeugen, das sie ewiglich
Nicht können überweisen.

11 Noch dennoch hab ich guten Mut
Und glaube, daß ich werde
Im Lebenslande Gottes Gut
Dort sehn und auf der Erde.
Frisch auf, getrost und unverzagt!
Wers nur mit Gott im Glauben wagt,
Der wird den Sieg erhalten.
