Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ihr sichern Menschenkinder” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for Trinity X.
Mel.: Nun ruhen alle Wälder.
YE men, secure and careless,
Ye stubborn sinners, fearless,
Behold, how Jesus weeps!
The Sun in sorrow pineth,
Who by love’s radiance shineth
With joy on him who faithful keeps.
2 Thou, world, art not discerning,
Nor unto Him art turning,
Nor wilt sin’s ways deplore.
Thus thou His sorrow wakest,
And from His heart thou makest
A fount of bitter tears to pour.
3 Come, ye who teach impurely
That many souls are surely
Predestined by God’s will
To hell and condemnation;
Say, if ye still be Christian,
What sense ye from these tears that spill?
4 Ah, do those fountains precious
Not prove the oath most gracious
Which God Most High hath sworn?
That sinner dieth never,
Nor weeps in hell forever,
If he to God repenting turn.
5 God will Himself convert Him
And in the way support him
Where grace and love abound;
But if he be resistant,
Hard-hearted and insistent,
Where is the guilty party found?
6 What more to say, but solely:
Fall, fall, ye tears most holy
And fill our hearts within!
Faith bears the deepest longing
To catch you teardrops thronging
Which heal and salve the wounds of sin.
7 O balm, my wounds redressing,
Found here for my possessing—
O spring that quickens me!
O dew, by which all groweth
That serves for peace, and floweth
With comfort and with blessings free!
8 These tears I will be taking
To mend my heart when aching
With sorrows and with fears.
Therein I will take pleasure,
And bathe in fullest measure
Whene’er the world draws forth my tears.
9 I by these tears am given
A pathway unto heaven,
Which God shuts not to me.
Because of their outspilling,
I will see God fulfilling
For me what good and blest may be.

GERMAN
Ihr sichern Menschenkinder,
ihr hart verstockten Sünder,
ach! sehet, Jesus weint!
die Sonne stehet trübe,
die durch den Glanz der Liebe
voll Freuden allen Frommen scheint.
2 Daß du, o Welt, nicht hören,
noch dich zu ihm bekehren,
und anders werden willt,
das bringt ihm tiefe Schmerzen,
und macht, daß aus dem HErzen
ein brunn voll bittrer Thränen quillt.
3 Kommt her, die dieses lehren,
als ob viel Seelen wären
von Gott prædestiniert,
daß sie verdammt sein müßten;
sagt, seid ihr annoch Christen,
ob ihrs aus diesen Thränen spürt?
4 Ach! wollen nicht die Zähren
den großen Eid bewähren?
da Gott der Höchste schwört:
der Sünder soll nicht sterben,
noch ewiglich verderben,
der Buße thut und sich bekehrt.
5 Gott selbst will ihn bekehren,
und ihn die Wege lehren,
wo lauter Gnad und Huld.
Doch wenn er widerstrebet,
und in Verstockung lebet,
wer ist an der Verdammnis schuld?
6 Was soll ich noch erwähnen?
fallt, fallt, ihr edlen Thränen
in mein und aller Herz!
der Glaube trägt Verlangen,
euch sämtlich aufzufangen.
Denn ihr heilt allen Sündenschmerz.
7 O Balsam meiner Wunden,
den ich allhier gefunden!
o Quell, die mich erquickt!
o Thau, durch welchen grünet,
was nur zum Frieden dienet,
und mich mit Torst und Segen schmückt!
8 Die Thränen will ich nehmen
zu stillen alles Grämen,
wodurch das Herze schmacht.
Ich will mich dran ergötzen,
und mich damit benetzen,
wenn mich die Welt zu weinen macht.
9 Ich will durch diese Thränen
den Weg zum Himmel bähnen,
den Gott mir nicht verschließt,
Kurz: um der Thränen willen
wird Gott an mir erfüllen,
was allen gut und selig ist.
