Here is my translation of the hymn, “Als Jesus nahe kommt zur Stadt” (J. Heermann, 1638), from the author’s Evangelia, a paraphrase of the gospel for Trinity X, from Luke 19:41–48, set to the melody of the tune traditionally associated with the day, Dachstein’s paraphrase of Ps. 137.
Mel.: An Wasserflüßen Babylon.
WHEN Jesus near the city came,
His heart to grief was driven
That she, so full of sin and shame,
Would make such jest of heaven.
Beholding her with tears, He saith:
“Jerusalem, who can thy death,
Thy mis’ry, now be telling?
If thou hadst known, yea, even thou,
What might thy peace and rest endow,
Thou wouldst be safely dwelling.
2 “But now thou art too blind to learn,
Nor wilt thy need be knowing.
The Lord, whose wrath as fire doth burn,
Shall be thy wage bestowing,
And enemies shall ring thee round,
Thy children under siege be found,
And joy by grief supplanted.
On every side shall torments swell,
And sorrows more than man can tell,
And no escape be granted.
3 “With righteous zeal the Lord of hosts
Will vengeance take upon you,
And all your walls and prideful boasts,
Tear down, and in them drown you.
Then not a stone which now men see,
(However firmly set) shall be
Stil in its place remaining!
And this because thou knewest not
Him who thy greatest blessing brought,
The Lord thy God disdaining!”
4 When in the temple there did stand
Men selling wares and buying,
He drove them out with mighty hand,
These words of Scripture crying:
My house shall be a house of pray’r
But ye, what have ye made it there?
A den of murd’rers greedy!
Ye seek but wealth, not souls to save;
With Me ye thieves no part shall have!
Take flight, ye villains, speedy!
5 Then in the temple He began
To teach all those surrounding,
And there each day for every man
The Word of life was sounding.
’Twas bitter to the foe to hear,
Who stirred the high priests up in fear
To seek one to betray Him,
That they might take Him by deceit
Before their lying judgment seat
And as a lamb to slay Him.
6 But they, though plotting morn and eve
With all their wicked faction,
Could find not how they might achieve
And work their wicked action.
For all the people to Him ran,
Regarding Him a mighty man,
Indeed, a prophet holy,
And very Light whom God had sent.
Wherefore they dared not, as they meant,
To put to death the Savior.

GERMAN
Als Jesus nahe kommt zur Stadt,
da jammerts ihn im Herzen,
daß sie, voll Sünd und Missethat,
den Himmel will verscherzen.
Er siehet sie mit Thränen an,
und spricht: Jerusalem, wer kann
dein Elend gnug beschreiben?
Wann du es wüßtest, würdest du
bedenken, wie in Fried und Ruh
dein Wohlstand möge bleiben.
2 Nun aber bist du so verblendt
willt deine Noth nicht wissen.
Der Herr, des Zorn wie Feuer brennt,
wird dich recht lassen büssen.
Es werden deine Feind um dich
und deine Kinder lagern sich:
Mit großem Grimm und Haufen.
Auf allen Seiten wird die Pein
und Trübsal unaussprechlich sein.
Da wird kein Mensch entlaufen.
3 Der Herre Zebaoth wird sich
mit Eifer an dir rächen,
und deine Maure, drauf du dich
verläßest, ganz zerbrechen.
Man wird dir auch nicht einen Stein,
wie fest er mag geleget sein
in seinem Orte lassen.
Und solches darum, daß du nicht
erkennest, was dir guts geschicht:
kannst nichts, als mich nur hassen.
4 Und da er in dem Tempel fand,
die Krämerei da trieben,
jagt er sie fort mit starker Hand,
und sprach: Es steht geschrieben:
Mein Haus, das ist ein Betehaus:
Ihr aber, was macht ihr daraus?
Ihr machts zur Mördergruben.
Ihr sucht Geld, nicht der Seelen Heil.
Weh euch! Ihr habt an mir kein Theil!
Trollt euch, ihr bösen Buben!
5 Nachdem fing er im Tempel an
das Volk mit Fleiß zu lehren.
Es könnte täglich jedermann
das Wort des Lebens hören.
Dies war dem Teufel Gall und Gift,
die Hohenpriester er anstifft,
daß sie darauf bald trachten,
mit ihrem Anhang, ob sie ihn
durch List doch könnten richten hin,
und als ein Lämmlein schlachten.
6 Sie funden aber noch nicht Rath
mit ihren Rottgesellen.
Wo und wie solche Frevelthat
sei füglich fortzustellen.
Dann alles Volk das hing ihm an,
und hielt ihn für den großen Mann,
und heiligen Propheten,
den Gott gesandt, das wahre Licht.
Drum dürften sie es wagen nicht,
daß sie ihn sollten töten.
