Halt Haus, o Mensch, in dieser Zeit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Halt Haus, o Mensch, in dieser Zeit” (L. Laurentii, 1700), from the author’s Evangelia Melodica, for Trinity IX.

Mel.: Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit.

SO keep thy house, O man, and live,

That when death’s hand is beck’ning

Thou mayest be prepared to give

Before God’s throne a reck’ning,

How thou His blessings didst employ.

If thou didst squander and destroy,

Thou shalt needs pay hereafter.

2 The Lord shall, to thy sore disgrace

From out thine office send thee,

And thou shalt go with downcast face

To hell, where fire shall rend thee.

Here is there but a moment brief,

There, endless pain without relief.

How wilt thou pay hereafter?

3 Think, Mammon-brothers, who today

In great estates are seated,

Who morn and eve have merry play,

Till by your wine well heated,

Who with old Laz’rus’ wealthy host

Delight in your possessions most:

What dreadful fate awaits you!

4 Hath God your pantry amply filled

That ye such goods might squander?

Yea, that ye might feast, drink, and build,

And mighty projects ponder?

Nay, all this was but lent to you,

That to the poor ye good might do,

And share with them your bounty.

5 Now pomp and pride have grown too great,

And mischief, out of measure.

Men dress above their due estate

And owning princely treasure,

Yea, even as a king doth, now

Nigh all men dress, if funds allow,

And saith: “I can afford it!”

6 How many paupers suff’ring lack

Might have a living ration

From what adorns so many_a back

All in the name of fashion!

What needful is, and honor brings—

All Christians well may wear such things,

But not for empty boasting!

7 Therefore, O guild of Mammon, deign

To help the poor and needy,

That thou, when Jesus comes again,

May have their pity speedy,

And to their dwellings be received,

When those once here by want aggrieved

Shall praise to God thy mercy.

8 How this shall on that Day appear,

Though it be late or early,

Is not made by our Shepherd clear,

Yet will it happen surely.

Therefore, ye worldlings all, be wise,

And heav’nly profits realize,

The poor with wealth befriending.

9 But blessed is the rich in God,

Who with what He bestoweth

Is well content, as on life’s road

By faith in Him he goeth!

God will to him so much bequeathe,

That he his house may keep therewith.

What more would any Christian?

10 Lord Jesus Christ, preserve Thou me

From Mammon’s sin-profusion,

That so my conscience may not be

Harmed with such foul pollution.

The treasures of the soul but send,

To Thee the rest I will commend,

Thou wilt attend the body.

Halt Haus, o Mensch, in dieser Zeit,

daß du nach diesem Leben,

seist Rechenschaft davon bereit

vor Gottees Thron zu geben.

Verbringest du des Herren Gut,

daß er dir hier auf Rechnung thut,

so mußt du dort einbüßen.

2 Es wird der Herr das Amt von dir

mit Spott und Schanden nehmen,

und du wirst ewig dich dafür

in Höllenabgrund schämen.

Hier ist nur eine kleine Zeit,

dort folgt die große Ewigkeit.

Wie willt du dort bezahlen?

3 Ihr Mammons Brüder denket nach,

die ihr in Gütern sitzet,

und lebt in Freuden Nacht und Tag

bis euch der Wein erhitzet,

die ihr mit jenem Reichenmann,

die Güter legt zur Wollust an,

wie will es euch ergehen?

4 Ist euch das Gut darum vertraut,

daß ihr es sollt umbringen,

ja, daß ihr fresset, sauft und baut,

und sprecht von großen Dingen?

Nein, euch ist anvertraut dies Gut,

daß ihr den Armen gutes thut,

und theilet eure Güter.

5 Es nimmt nun leider überhand

Stolz, Pracht und gottlos Wesen;

man kleidt sich über Macht und Stand,

was sich ein Fürst erlesen,

ja gar ein König auf der Welt

trägt jeder fast, wenn er hat Geld,

und spricht, ich kanns bezahlen.

6 Ach, ach! wie manches arme Kind

hätt davon können leben,

was mancher auf den Rücken bindt,

sich damit zu erheben! 

Was Noth, und was zu Ehren ist,

kann tragen jeder frommer Christ,

allein nicht zu stolzieren.

7 Drum mache doch, du Mammonszunft,

dich Freude mit den Armen,

daß sie bei Christi Wiederkunft

sich über dich erbarmren,

und in die Hütten nehmen auf,

wenn dort der armen Kinder Hauf

wird deine Güte rühmen.

8 Wie dies an jenem Tage wird

an vielen sein zu sehen,

hat uns verhehlt der treue Hirt,

doch wirds gewiß geschehen.

Drum seid ihr Kinder dieser Welt

doch klug, und macht mit eurem Geld

die Armen euch zu Freunde.

9 Wohl aber, der in Gott allein

ist reich und wohl zufrieden

mit dem, was er ihm schenket ein,

solang er lebt hiernieden!

Gott wird ihm so viel theilen aus,

daß er damit kann halten Haus;

was will ein Christ mehr haben?

10 Herr Jesu Christ, bewahre mich

vor Mammons Sündenschätze,

damit nicht mein Gewissen sich

mit solchem Koth verletze.

Gib Schätz an meiner Seelen mir,

was übrig ist befehl ich dir,

den Leib wirst du versorgen.
