Wer eine feste Stadt will han

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wer eine feste Stadt will han” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598) from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, one of several hymns for Trinity X.

Mel.: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott.

HE that would have a city safe,

And peace at home abiding,

Nor be of tyrants made chafe,

Nor storms of war betiding,

Nor the chariot-wall,

Circling, seek its fall,

But be safe and whole

From harm to body_and soul,

And goods and honor ever:—

2 Let him hold dear and take to heart

The preaching of the Savior

Who would true peace to all impart

In cross and sorrow ever.

Which Himself He bore,

Sinners to restore,

Even suff’ring death,

And rising, that by faith

We might in Him be righteous.

3 Who heartily to Jesus clings

Repenting and believing,

Keeps safe house, field, and all good things,

From foes and pow’rs. bereaving.

He with child and wife

Hath a peaceful life,

While the brazen world

Is ’neath God’s judgment hurled,

And forfeits fame and power.

4 Then let your hearts receive this Word

Dear fathers and dear mothers,

For there are no goods more assured

For children—yours and others’—

Than God’s Word and faith.

Else the spoils of death

Ye and yours abide!

Let Christ, who therefore died,

Be all our peace and gladness.

5 Amen! ’tis true, and true abides.

Who loves Thee, Christ, the Savior—

He freely in Thy Word confides,

Relying on it ever.

And Thy Father he

Finds to dwell with Thee,

And secure shall stand

From foes on every hand.

Wer eine feste Stadt will han

und Fried mit Weib und Kindern,

daß sie bekriege kein Tyrann,

noch stürme, sie zu plundern,

daß kein Wagenburg,

rings umher geführt,

ihm den Paß verleg,

noch großer Schad gescheh

an Leib, Seel, Gut und Ehre.

2 Der laß ihm theur befohlen sein

die Predigt von dem Friede,

durch Jesum Christum selbs geschehn,

bei schwerem Kreuz und Leide,

welchs er auf sich nahm,

auch in den Tod kam,

doch nicht drinnen bleib,

sondern Gerechtigkeit

uns Sündern widerbrachte.

3 Wer sich daran von Herzen hält

in wahrer Buß und Glauben,

dem ist bewahrt sein Haus und Feld,

kein Feind muß ihn berauben,

ja sein Weib und Kind

mit ihm selig sind,

da die freche Welt

in Gottes Urtheil fällt

mit Ehr und Macht verloren.

4 Laßts euch ins Herz gesaget sein,

ihr lieben Vätr und Mütter,

für eure Kinder groß und klein

sind kein gewisser Güter

denn Gottes Wort und Glaub,

sonst macht ihr zum Raub,

euch und eure KInd,

Christus, der drum geweint,

sei unser Fried und Freude.

5 Amen, es ist und bleibet wahr,

wer dich, Herr Christe, liebet,

hält sich zu deim Wort offenbar,

immer verlassen bleibet,

denn sich sein annimmt,

ja selbs zu ihm kümmt,

dein Vater mit dir,

da wohnt man für und für

unüberwindlich. Amen.
