Tyrus und Sidon hat den Herrn

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Tyrus und Sidon hat den Herrn” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity XII, with title: “The Lord’s Departure from the Coasts of Tyre and Sidon.”

Mel.: Mag ich Unglück nicht widerstahn.

OF this may Tyre and Sidon boast,

That nigh their coast

Christ Jesus’ pathway tended,

Yea, wonders there by Him were done,

Ne’er wrought by one

Of earth’s physicians splendid:

A wife did mourn / her daughter born,

Who was possessed. / Her Christ released,

And all her sickness mended.

2 Oh, what a blessed sight did they

Behold that day
Among the heathen nation,

When God the Son did visit them—

The sons of Ham,

Th’ accursèd generation!

Thus God to all / the lands would call,

To earth’s far end / His doctrine send,

To Satan’s devastation.

3 Where’er Christ goes, He gladness gives,

But when He leaves,

The sorrow is tremendous!

This Tyre and Sidon knew, where long

No Christian song

Was heard, but wails horrendous.

The Pope and Turk / did ruin work

In many a place. / Pray God for grace,

And that He would defend us!

Jesum nicht fern

gehabt von seinen Grenzen:

Ja Wunder hat er drin gethan,

welchs sonst kein Mann

vermocht mit allen Artzten:

Eim armen Weib / ihr Tochter lieb

vom bösen Geist kräftig erklöst:

Der Beste steurt dem ärgsten.

2 O welch ein große Seligkeit

ist solche Zeit

den Heiden widerfahren,

da Gottes Sohn auch sie besucht,

die doch verflucht

des Hams Geschlechte waren.

Gott will bekannt sein allem Land

wein hin und her / durch seine Lehr

des Satans Reich zerstören.

3 Wo Christus hinkömmt, macht er Freud.

Ach sein Abscheid

geschicht nicht ohne Trauren!

Tyrus und Sidon hats erfahrn

für vielen Jahrn

beraubt Christlicher Pfarren:

Pabst, Mahomet / viel Land und Städt

verwüstet hat. Bitt Gott um Gnad,

er woll uns hier bewahren!
