Welch reicher Mann in dieser Welt

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Welch reicher Mann in dieser Welt” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne Geistliche Leider, for Trinity IX, with title “Of the accounting with the steward.”

Mel.: Kommt her zu mir, spricht Gottes Sohn.

WHAT rich man in this world cares not

Nor asks of all that he hath bought,

How well his household goeth?

Or if there’s gain or loss this year,

When he doth hints and rumors hear

That wealth no longer groweth?

2 Yea, if he prospers not as due,

Because the steward is untrue—

Who then inquireth never?

All masters make their claim, and call

Such stewards, and dismiss them all,

And miss no reck’ning ever.

3 God is the true rich Man, from whom

Comes all we have until the tomb—

The Lord, all gifts bestowing

In church and state o’er earth so wide,

In all estates where men reside,

To one and all He speaketh,

4 And saith to those who ill attend:

“What call’st thou this poor labor, friend?

Should’st thou so false be dealing?

Thy treachery was told to Me.

Give thine account! For I will be

Thy judge, thy verdict sealing.”

5 This Caiaphas learned for his fraud:

In truth, he was deposed by God,

Through Pilate proof supplying.

So did that rich man who defied

Old Moses in his sinful pride,

And left poor Laz’rus lying.

6 Whatever man is of their kind

Shall shortly bitter tidings find

For all his wicked scorning,

And give account to God our Lord.

Whoe’er this day feels not the sword,

May perish ere the morning!

7 Whoe’er believes not, soon must learn,

(If in this life he will not turn,

But multiplies transgression)—

That we on earth have naught at all—

A Christian with his goods must call

Himself God’s own possession.

Welch reicher Mann in dieser Welt

fragt nie bei seinem Gut und Geld,

wie Haus gehalten werde,

Ob sich befind Nutz oder Schad,

Wenn für ihn kommt die Rucht und Sag,

daß sich dasselb nicht mehre?

2 Ja, daß es nur gemindert werd,

weil untreu ist sein Schaffener,

wer ist der dazu schweiget?

Ein jeder für sich fordern läßt,

den Haushalter vom Amte stößt,

kein Rechnung außen bleibet.

3 Gott ist der wahre reiche Mann,

all Haushaltung wir von ihm han,

er ist Herr aller Gaben,

im Kirchen und Weltregiment,

durchaus in aller Leute Ständ,

er wird eim jedern sagen.

4 Der seines Amts nicht treulich wart,

Gesell, was ist das für ein Art?

pSollst du so fälschlich handeln?

Dein Untreu ist mir angezeigt,

thu Rechnung, und hab dein Bescheid.

Ich bleibe, du mußt wandern.

5 Solchs hat erfahrn der Caiphas,

wahrlich, Gott hat ihn abgesatzt,

Pilatus muß bezeugen:

Auch der, so bei seim großen Gut

Mosen veracht aus Übermuth,

und Lazarum ließ liegen.

6 Wer sicher ihres gleichen ist,

demselben wird in kurzer Frist

auch angekündigt werden,

Rechnung zu thun Gott unserm Herrn.

Wer heute meint, es sei noch fern,

muß wohl für Morgens sterben.

7 Wer solchs nicht gläubt, der muß erfahrn:

Ach, daß man nicht in so viel Jahrn,

die Gott selbs gibt, erkennet,

daß wir nichts haben an der Welt:

Ein Christ sich mit seim Gut und Geld

selbs Gottes eigen nennet.
