Durch unsers Gottes Gütigkeit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Durch unsers Gottes Gütigkeit”* (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, for the First Sunday after Epiphany (Sunday in the Octave of Epiphany), from the Epistle of the blessed apostle Paul to the Romans, the 12th chapter (vv. 1–6). Olearius’s book assigns the melody “Erschienen ist,” but the text has no Alleluias required for that tune. The reader may supply them if he wishes. Another fitting melody often used by Olearius is “Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.”

*The hymn is to be distinguished from another paraphrase of the same text beginning thus, but in the meter 88998, by Martin Opitz, “Durch unsers Gottes Gütigkeit, die über uns schwebt jederzeit,” which was included in editions of Praxis Pietatis Melica. though not evid. with the Geneva Ps. 13 melody, from which that meter was taken.

BY God’s great mercies, which I preach,
And by His grace, I you beseech
Dear brethren, in such wise to live
As off’rings of yourselves to give. [Alleluia.]

2 Your bodies offer without fraud,
Pure, living, holy, pleasing God,
His service reas’nable ye do,
When God in mercy looks on you. [Alleluia.]

3 Be not unto this world conformed,
Renew your mind, and be transformed,
That ye may prove most carefully
What your God’s gracious will may be. [Alleluia.]

4 God’s will is right and good forsooth,
And perfect all He doth in truth.
And whoso doth what God thinks good
Lives rightly, as a Christian should. [Alleluia.]

5 Therefore I say by grace of heav’n,
Which God Himself to me hath giv’n,
Let no vain thought seduce your wits,
But rightly act, as you befits. [Alleluia.]

6 Think of yourself but soberly,
As faith’s true standard teacheth thee.
As God to you faith’s measure gives;
Thus each as His true member lives. [Alleluia.]

7 As members have their kind and place,
So in God’s kingdom, by His grace,
Our gifts all differ fittingly,
That each the other’s help may be. [Alleluia.]

Durch unsers Gottes Gütigkeit
und durch des Herrn Barmherzigkeit
vermahn ich euch, daß ihr so lebt,
daß ihr euch Gott zum Opfer gebt.

2 Der Leib soll heilig, lebend, rein
ein Opfer Gott gefällig sein,
sein Dienst soll mit Vernunft geschehn,
wenn euch Gott gnädig wsoll ansehn.

3 Stellt euch ja dieser Welt nicht gleich,
erneut den Sinn, verändert euch,
und prüft mit allem Fleiß dabei,
was eures Gottes Wille sei.

4 Was Gott will, das ist recht und gut,
vollkommen alles, was er thut,
wer thut, was Gott gefällig ist,
der lebt recht als ein guter Christ.

5 Drum sags ich euch auch durch die Gnad,
die mir mein Gott gegeben hat,
seht, daß euch Ehrgeiz nicht verführt,
halt euch nur recht, wie sichs gebührt.

6 Halt mäßig von euch selber nur,
wie euch das lehrt die Glaubens Schnur,
wie Gott des Glaubens Maß euch giebt,
daß ihr euch fein als Glieder liebt.

7 Die Glieder sind nicht alle gleich,
so gehts auch in dem Gnadenreich,
es sind die Gaben mancherlei,
daß eins des andern Hülfe sei.
