Herr Gott, der du den Ehestand

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Herr Gott, der du den Ehestand” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for the Second Sunday after Trinity. In later publications the hymn is paired with “Nun freut euch” (Markus Jenny & Ref. hymnals) and “Es ist das Heil” (A. F. Fischer, KL-Lexicon).

LORD God, who hast the holy‿estate
Of married life ordainèd,
And by this bond Thy creature great
In growth and joy sustainèd,
Oh, let it by Thy light of grace
For man and wife in every place
Be ever filled with blessing!

2 Curb Satan’s murd’rous work and guile
By Thy protection ever;
Thou know’st, Thy blessing to defile,
Is all his mind’s endeavor.
Then lest he break by wicked arts
The peace and concord of their hearts,
Restrain his works, and foil them.

3 Their souls in gladness and distress
Let faithful dwell together,
And walk Thy ways in godliness
Through fair and stormy weather.
O blest is he who looks to Thee!
He shall in all things certainly
Find help and counsel needful.

4 So in Thy grace let all delight,
In every occupation,
And by Thy blessing and Thy might
Succeed in their vocation,
So shall we be sustained by grace,
Though still for bread we must our face
Wet with the sweat of labor.
 
5 When Thou to bless a man hast willed,
No foe hath pow’r availing;
The cruse of oil which Thou hast filled,
Shall never then be failing.
Thou bringest wealth from scarcity,
And speak’st a word, and instantly
To wine the water turnest.

6 And even though the cross may press,
We need not be despairing;
Here must we days happiness
With days of woe be sharing.
Thou givest us this comfort fast,
That all things for our good at last
Shall surely work together.

7 Thou wilt the bread of life bestow
On us at last in heaven,
To drink from springs that ever flow
With joy, we shall be given;
So shall we lack not here nor there;
For we are joined both now and e’er
To Christ, our souls’ dear Bridegroom.

Herr Gott, der du den Ehestand
hast selber eingesetzet,
daß dein Geschöpfe durch diß Band
sich mehret und ergötzet;
laß doch durch deinen Gnadenschein
ihn allezeit voll Segen sein
bei allen Eheleuten.

2 DU wollst des Satans Mord und List
durch deinen Schutz verwähren.
Du weißt, we er geschäftig ist,
dein heilsam Werk zu stören.
Daß nun durch seine Bosheit nicht
des Herzens Fried und Eintracht bricht,
so steure seinen Werken.

3 Die Seelen laß in Lieb und Leid
getreu beisammen stehen,
und in der wahren Frömmigkeit
auf deinen Wegen gehen.
WOhl dem, der dich vor Augen hat!
in allen wird ihm Rath und That
nach Wunsche glücklich fallen.

4 Laß auch darbei Beruf und Stand
sich deiner Güte freuen,
und durch die reiche Segenshand
die Arbeit wohl gedeihen.
So fehlet unsrer Nahrung nichts;
ob wir im Schweis des Angesichts
das Brot gleich müssen essen.

5 Ach! wenn du jemand segnen willt,
so kann es niemand währen.
Der Ölkrug, welchen du gefüllt,
ist niemals auszuleeren.
Aus Mangel machst du Überfluß,
uns sprichts du nur ein Wort, so mus
auch Wein aus Wasser werden.

6 Drings auch das liebe Kreuz herein;
so darf man nicht verzagen.
Es muß ja wohl ein Wechsel sein
von gut- und bösen Tagen.
Du hast uns schon den Trost gesetzt,
daß alle Dinge doch zuletzt
zu unserm Besten dienen.

7 Das Brot des Lebens wirst du uns
im Himmel endlich schenken.
Die Quelle deines Freudensbrunns
wird uns da ewig tränken,
so daß uns hier und dort nichts fehlt.
Denn wir sind hier und dort vermählt
dem Bräutgam unsrer Seelen.
