Here is my translation of the hymn, “Meine Seele, denke dran” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for the feast of the Baptism, which feast in Neumeister’s two series is located in two different places, this text in the sanctoral section between Thomas and Epiphany; the first series text, “Mein Geist, laß irdisch Wesen stehen” (tr. last year as “My Mind, No More Earth’s Trifles Knowing”) between Simon & Jude and Festival of the Reformation. Curiously, neither suggests a use immediately after Epiphany nor a

THINK, my soul, with rev’rent thought,
What the Lord in me hath wrought
When He baptized me, His child,
By His Word and washing mild,
That I might be fair and clean,
Free from all the filth of sin,
And the joys of heaven win.

2 When my Savior, Jesus Christ,
Was Himself by John baptized,
It was done to comfort me,
For therein my faith should see
That by Jesus’ holiness
He my Baptism deigns to bless
For my endless blessedness.

3 Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Therein show they are the Host,
And are present still and aye,
When a child of man today
Is to Baptism’s water brought.
Therefore all the blessings wrought
There are also made my lot.

4 Just as heav’n was open found,
So I have a certain ground
That it opened was for me,
When I came baptized to be;
Daily still its gates extend,
Till God bids me there ascend,
When my course on earth shall end.

5 Jesus, my Redeemer, write
Thou my name with all delight
In the Book of Life, I pray.
Then I may with gladness say,
Christ all heaven’s glories there—
Crown and throne and garment fair—
For my Portion did prepare!

6 Fly, then, wealth and vanity!
Fly! What is the earth to me?
There’s pomp or pow’r that e’er
To the glory can compare
Witnessed in this holy flood,
And obtained by Jesus’ blood,
Making us the sons of God.

7 Thus for all my living days,
Baptism shall remain always’
Of my life the balm and light,
Which shall not, when death’s in sight,
Be forgotten nor disprized
I a Christian am baptized,
And am blest in Jesus Christ.

Meine Seele, denke dran,
was der Herr an mir gethan,
da er mich getaufet hat
durch sein Wort und Wasserbad.
Denn da sollt ich schön und rein
von dem Sünden Unflath sein,
und mich alles Heils erfreun.

2 Wie mein Heiland, Jesus Christ,
selbst getaufet worden ist,
so ist mirs zum Trost geschehn.
Denn da soll der Glaube sehn,
daß durch Christi Heiligkeit
meine Taufe wird geweiht
zu der Seelen Seligkeit.

3 Vater, Sohn und Heilger Geist
haben auch allda beweist,
daß sie gegenwärtig sind,
wenn man noch ein Menschenkind
zu dem Brunn der Taufe trägt.
Was sie nun vor Segen hegt,
der ist all auf mich gelegt.

4 Wie der Himmel offen stund,
so hab ich auch festen Grund,
daß er mir ist aufgemacht,
als man mich zur Taufe bracht;
und mir täglich offen steht,
bis Gott mich daselbst erhuoht,
wenn mein Lauf zu Ende geht.

5 Jesus, mein Erlöser, schreib
meinen Namen, der ihm lieb,
in das Buch des Lebens ein.
Sollt ich denn nicht fröhlich sein?
Alle Himmels Herrlichkeit,
Kron und Thron und weißes Kleid,
ist zur Erbschaft mir bereit.

6 Weg du eitles Gut und Geld!
Weg nur mit der ganzen Welt!
Da ist keine Macht und Pracht
dieser Hoheit gleich geacht,
die man in der Taufe findt,
und durch Christi Blut gewinnt.
Denn da wird man Gottes Kind.

7 Nun, solang ich lebe hier,
bleibt die Taufe für und für,
meines Lebens Trost und Licht;
des mein Herz auch sterbend nicht
bei der Zuversicht vergißt:
Ich bin ein getaufter Christ,
der in Christo selig ist!
