Wer Gott nicht kindlich traut

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wer Gott nicht kindlich traut” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, for Epiphany I.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

WHO hath no childlike trust
 in God, but heaven scorning,
Would steal His place, afflicts
 himself both eve and morning,
With worries infinite,
 for his untrusting way,
And restless makes his heart,
 and fretful night and day.

2 Whoever trusts his God,
 who cares for us most surely,
Casts all his cares on Him,
 who every morning early
On all the sons of men
 doth cause His mercy true
And faithfulness to shine,
 yea, hourly shows it new

3 Whoever trusts his God
 O’ercomes when trouble neareth;
Frail reason must be still,
 when need and want appeareth.
He never yet forsook
 the one who trusts in God;
Who stands upon this rock
 hath built a strong abode.

4 Whoever trusts his God
 can joy as if in heaven,
Since from God’s gracious hand
 he every good is given,
Which God hath promised him;
 This true is found indeed
With blessings rich by him
 who doth this counsel heed.

5 That man abideth blest,
 and blest is all his doing.
Where’er God’s blessings rest,
 all things must well be going.
There shall both great and small
 be blest, where the abode
Stands only on God’s Word,
 and people trust their God.

Wer Gott nicht kindlich traut,
und will sich selbst versorgen,
der plaget sich nur selbst
den Abend als den Morgen
mit Sorgen ohne Zahl,
weil das Mißtrauen macht,
daß sein Herz ohne Ruh
sich ängstet Tag und Nacht.

2 Wer seinem Gott vertraut,
der uns will wohl versorgen,
wirft sein Anliegen stets
auf Gott, der alle Morgen
läßt aller Menschen Schar
die große Güt und Treu
erscheinen überall,
noch stündlich immer neu.

3 Wer seinen Gott vertraut,
kann alles überwinden,
Vernunft muß schweiget, wenn
sich Noth und Mangel finden,
Gott hat noch keinen nie
verlassen, der ihm traut,
wer steht an diesem Grund,
der hat recht wohl gebaut.

4 Wer seinem Gott vertraut,
der kann recht fröhlich leben,
weil ihm aus Gottes Hand
wird alles Guts gegeben,
was ihm sein Gott verheißt
das findt sich in der That
mit reichem Segen, wohl
dem, der folgt diesem Rath.

5 Gesegnet bleibt der Mann,
gesegnet seine Thaten,
wo Gottes Segen ist,
muß alles wohl gerathen,
da bleibet Groß und Klein
gesegnet, wo man baut,
allein auf Gottes Wort,
und seinem Gott vertraut.
