Höret ihr Eltern Christus spricht”

Here is my translation of the Domestic Estate (Child-rearing) hymn, “Höret ihr Eltern Christus spricht” (Ludwig Helmbold, d. 1598), from Ev.-luth. Gsb #554, first found in the author’s Crepundia Sacra (1596), later included in Erfurt 1648, Cantica Sacra (1655) with title: “On the Fourth Commandment for 4 voices by Joachim Burck,” Gotha 1660, Wittenberg 1672, etc. The Wisconsin Hymnal has a slightly revised form with the first line “Ihr Eltern, hört was Christus spricht.” William M. Czamanske’s 3-stanza cento translation (stanzas 1, 4, 5a, 6b, as published) from 1938, which appears in The Lutheran Hymnal 630, also in Ev. Luth. Hymnary 186, etc., is held in copyright by Concordia Publishing House. Rather than seek to obtain permission for those lines, I have opted simply to translate the whole thing, though by no means wish to discount or disregard Czamanske’s fine translation. The appointed melody is “Wo Gott zum Haus nicht gibt sein Gunst.”

 

GIVE ear, ye parents, Christ doth say:
Let children not be kept away,
But to My open arms draw near
That I may bless whom I hold dear.

2 The heav’nly kingdom’s also theirs;
What thing on earth with this compares?
The world’s pomp, glory, and delight
Are ended soon and fled from sight.

3 That kingdom never suffers loss
To which Christ Jesus carries us
By doctrine true,—th’ eternal Word,—
By which salvation is conferred.

4 Obey Him, then, let them be brought,
That from their youth they may be taught
In church and school most carefully
How God in faith should honored be.

5 If them ye love with true intent,
Let them to Jesus’ arms be sent,
Who stops them, thou their foe must deem,
However great his love may seem.

6 What good can wealth those children do
Whose hearts are not well ordered too?
Who lets them come at Jesus’ call
Does for them what is best of all.

Ihr Eltern, hört, was Christus spricht: [Höret ihr Eltern,…]
den Kindlein sollt ihr wehren nicht,
daß sie sich meinen Armen nahn,
denn ich will segnend sie empfahn.

2 Auch ihrer ist das Himmelreich,
und was ist dem auf Erden gleich?
Mit aller Weltlust, Pracht und Ehr
hat's bald ein End und ist nicht mehr.

3 Das Himmelreich sich nie verliert,
darein uns Jesus Christus führt
durch seine Lehr, dies ewge Wort,
das uns macht selig hier und dort.

4 Gehorchet ihm, und bringt sie her,
daß man von Jugend auf sie lehr
in Kirchen und in Schulen wohl,
wie man Gott gläubig ehren soll.

5 Habt ihr sie lieb mit treuem Sinn,
so führet sie zu Jesu hin;
wer dies nicht thut, ist ihnen feind,
wie groß auch seine Liebe scheint.

6 Was hilft den Kindelein großes geld,
wenn nicht ihr Herz in gut bestellt?
Wer sie zu Gott recht führen läßt,
der thut für sie das Allerbest.
