Sei hochgelobt, Ηerr Jesu Christ

Here is my translation of hymn for children, “Sei hochgelobt, Ηerr Jesu Christ” (Ernst Gottlieb Woltersdorf, d. 1761), which appears in Ev.-luth. Gsb #557, originally from teh author’s Sämtliche Neue Lieder (1767), no. 183, titled “Praise-hymn for children,” based on Isa. 40:11. It is distinguished from a similarly-beginning hymn, “S. h. H. J. C. / dß du der Sünder Heiland bist,” in the same hymnal, no. 115, “Praise of God for the work of redemption: This is certainly true, etc. 1 Tim. 1:15,” therefore there no question of a revision here, but intentional similarity. While Fischer indicates “Vom Himmel hoch,” the appointed melody in the Wisconsin Hymnal is “Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend.”

 

PRAISED be, O Christ, Thy tender heart,
That Thou the children’s Savior art,
And that Thou, King, didst not disdain
The little lambs for Thine to gain!

2 Praised be the Father wise above,
For such a wondrous act of love:
Th’ eternal Son He fashioned small
To save the children, one and all!

3 Praised be the Holy Spirit’s grace,
Who shows each lamb the Shepherd’s face,
And makes the children feel and see
The Savior loves them fervently!

4 He by His gracious word and breath
Makes little children wise in faith;
That they with joy may realize
What oft is hidden from the wise.

5 Lord, for the children Thou didst cry
To let them come. Here, then, am I.
Theirs is Thy kingdom, Thou didst say,
Wherefore Thou didst become as they.

6 Oh, teach our flock of children dear
That they may glorify Thee here
With heart and lips that speak as one;
So Satan’s realm shall be undone.

7 Praised be, O Christ, Thy tender heart,
That Thou the children’s Savior art,
And Thou, O highest Prince, wilt deign
The children’s Savior to remain!

Sei hochgelobt, Ηerr Jesu Christ,
daß du der Kinder Heiland bist,
und daß die kleine Lämmerschaar
dir, König, nicht verächtlich war.

2 Gelobet sei des Vaters Rath
für seiner Liebe Wunderthat!
Sein ewger Sohn wird arm und klein,
daß Kinder können selig sein.

3 Gelobet sei der heilge Geist,
der jedes Lamm zum Hirten weist,
der Kindern zu erkennen giebt,
wie brünstig sie der Heiland liebt.

4 Er macht durch seinen Gnadenzug
ein kleines Kind zum Glauben klug;
dann lernts mit Freuden das verstehn,
was weise Männer oft nicht sehn.

5 Laßt doch die Kindlein her zu mir!
So riefst du Herr! drum bin ich hier;
für sie gehört meine ganzes Reich,
drum ward ich selbst den Kindern gleich!

6 Ach, lehre unsre Kinderschaar,
daß sie zusammen immerdar
mit Herz und Lippen dich erhöhn:
so wird des Satans Reich vergehn.

7 Sei hochgelobt, Herr Jesu Christ,
daß du der Kinder Heiland bist,
und daß du, hocherhabner Fürst,
der Kinder Heiland bleiben wirst!
