Meines Jesu Passion

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Meines Jesu Passion” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for Esto mihi (Quinquagesima).

Mel.: Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.

JESUS’ Passion must alone
Bring me every grace and blessing;
Thus I will thereof intone
Quick’ning strains of consolation:
Jesus’ suff’ring, cross, and pain
Gladness for my heart obtain!

2 Grief, I grant, my heart must bind
For my thousandfold transgression,
Yet since pardon here I find,
Gladness too is my possession:
Jesus’ blood and anguished plea
From the judgment set me free.

3 Now no sin, no guilty debt
Can there be, my conscience biting;
Round me is God’s mercy set;
Blotted out, the whole handwriting.
Jesus’ blood of boundless worth
Drowns the debts of all the earth.

4 Hell and death may swear their oath
To destroy my faith’s foundation;
World and foe may vex me both,
Yet I say with jubilation:
Rave and roar, ye foes! I wield
Jesus’ cross, my sun and shield!

5 Though my living days may hold
Many sorrows yet to prove me,
No heartache or grief untold
From my Jesus can remove me.
His wounds, cross, and death I bless—
These my balm in all distress.

6 When at last I hail my death,
Far from doom will I be flying,
For I will with hearty faith,
Under Jesus’ cross be dying.
Jesus’ death and agony
Into life shall carry me.

GERMAN

Meines Jesu Passion
muß mir allen Segen bringen.
Darum will ich mir davon
ein erquickend Trostlied singen:
Christi Leiden, Kreuz und Schmerz
machet mir ein fröhlich Herz.

2 Traurig muß ich freilich sein,
wegen tausendfacher Sünde;
gleichwohl muß mich das erfreun,
daß ich hier Vergebung finde.
Christi Blut und Angstgeschrei
spricht mich vor Gerichte frei.

3 Kein Verbrechen, keine Schuld
beisset weiter mein Gewissen.
Mich umfähet Gottes Huld,
und die Handschrift ist zerrissen.
Christi theuerwerthes Blut
thut die ganze Summa gut.

4 Höll und Tod verschwöre sich
meinen Glaubensgrund zu brechen;
Welt und Teufel ängste mich;
dennoch will ich freudig sprechen:
Tobt, ihr Feinde, rasst und brüllt;
Christi Kreuz ist Sonn und Schild.

5 Hat auch meine Lebenszeit
sonst manch Ungemach zu leiden;
dennoch soll kein Herzeleid
mich von meinem Jesu scheiden.
Seine Wunden, Kreuz und Tod
sind mein Trost in aller Noth.

6 Wenn ich endlich sterben soll,
kann mich auch kein Tod verderben.
Denn da will ich glaubensvoll
unter Christi Kreuze sterben.
Christi Tod und Todespein
führet mich zum Leben ein.

Unter Jesu Kreuze stehn

My next new hymn translation for Lochner’s Passion-book was “Unter Jesu Kreuze stehn” (P. F. Hiller, 1767), of which stanzas 1–2 and 9 conclude Devotion 60 (“The Kinsmen and Friends of Jesus at the Cross”). I here present the whole text from the author’s Geistliches Liederkästlein, where it is found for October 22 “There stood at the cross of Jesus Mary His Mother and the disciple whom Jesus loved” (John 19:26) and the devotional thought: “Then it was painful, after the ascension no longer so; this gives us joy.” There the melody assigned is “Gott sei Dank in aller Welt.

Mel.: Jesu, komm doch selbst zu mir

STANDING under Jesus’ cross,
Gazing on His wounds and loss,
  ’Tis a place of blessedness,
Here doth faith its joy possess.

2 Singing ’neath the dreadful rod:
“Lo, it is the Lamb of God!”
Here my faith doth comfort take:
All these wounds are for my sake.

3 This is Christ the Savior’s blood,
Flowing also for my good.
  He prayed: “Father, oh, forgive!”
That I too might grace receive.

4 When I hear the thief’s request,
I will steal his sentence blest:
  Lord, remember me as well,
In Thy kingdom let me dwell!

5 When I see how, more than this,
Christ by God forsaken is,
  My faith hopes with certainty
That His God forsakes not me.

6 When I hear Him cry: “I thirst!”
I cry too: “Life’s Prince accurst!
Thy lips all my curses drank:
Thee I’ll ever bless and thank!”

7 When I hear Him say ere death:
“It is finished!” then my faith
  Full atonement doth behold;
I may seek the Father bold.

8 As His Spirit at the last
On His Father’s love is cast,
So my faith will pray as due:
  “Lord, receive my spirit too!”

9 When I die, pray, bring Thou me
’Neath Thy cross to rest with Thee,
Let me stand before Thy throne
  Gazing on those wounds alone!

GERMAN
Unter Jesu Kreuze stehn
ind in seine Wunden sehn
ist ein Stand der Seligkeit,
dessen sich der Glaube freut.

2 Nun heißts bei dem Kreuzesstamm:
Siehe, das ist Gottes Lamm,
und mein Glaube tröstet sich,
diese Wunden sind für mich.

3 Diß ist Gottes Sohnes Blut,
und es trieft auch mir zugut.
Er bat: Vater, ach vergib,
und bat dieß auch mir zulieb.

4 Hör ich, wie der Schächer sprach,
o so sprich ich diesem nach:
Herr, gedenke du zugleich
meiner mit in deinem Reich.

5 Seh ich, wie er über dieß
sich von Gott verlassen ließ;
o so hofft mein Glaube fest,

Gelobt sei Christus Gotts Sohn

Canticle XCVII. St. John’s Song, Rev. 1

Mel.: Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn.

BLEST be the Lord and Savior
Christ Jesus, very God,
Who in His love and favor
Washed us with His own blood.
With new life hath arrayed us,
And kings and priests hath made us,
Anointed for His praise.

2 In honor He hath brought us
Before the Father high,
Hath many bounties wrought us,
E’en heaven doth supply,
To Him be glory given,
All power and dominion
Now and forevermore!

GERMAN
Gelobt sei Christus Gotts Sohn,
der uns so lieben thut,
daß er von Sünden wäschn schon
uns mit seim theuren Blut,
hat uns gar neu geboren,
zu Konign auserkoren,
gesalbt zu Priestern auch.

2 Für Gott und seinem Vater
hat er uns so geehrt,
erzeiget viel Wohlthaten,
den Himmel uns beschert,
all Ehr sei ihm gegeben,
und alle Gwalt darneben
nun und in Ewigkeit.

Das ist gwiß war und offenbar

Canticle XCIV. Praise Song of the Holy Gospel, 1 Tim. 1.

Mel.: Mein Zung erkling und fröhlich sing.

TRIED and tested, never bested,
Is this faithful word and dear,
That Christ Jesus manifested
Was, to save us mortals here,
Reconciling our defiling,
Turning all our sin and fear.

2 God to save us His Son gave us,
Sent Him as a Servant poor,
Innocently would relieve us
And our righteousness restore,
From all sinning new birth winning,
To make us God’s sons once more.

3 Of unruly sinners truly
I am chief, of hallows last,
But in God’s good pleasure holy
He hath me not from Him cast,
But hath given grace from heaven,
For my joy that e’er shall last.

4 Yea, my Savior grants me favor,
And the saints in every place:
In the world He showeth ever
His great mercy, love, and grace,
Heaven giving those who, living,
Seek in faith His gracious face.

5 To th’ eternal King supernal
Everlasting, ever wise,
King of heav’n and hell infernal,
In whose hand all power lies,
Adoration, acclamation,
Praise, and honor ever rise!

ein fein Wort gar theur und währt,
daß Jesus Christus ist sichtbar

2 Er ist kommen, uns zu Frommen,
daß er uns sein arme Knecht,
den all Unschuld war genommen,
von allen Sünden macht gerecht,
uns verloren, neu geboren,

5 Wir solln geben all Ehr eben
dem ewigen König frohn,
der unvergänglich thut leben
und unsichtbar in seim Thron,
allein weise, den thut preisen
in Ewigkeit mit süßem Thon.

Nun wir im Glauben sind gerecht

The Triumph-Song of Christians in Affliction, Rom. 5.

Mel.: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott.

NOW that by faith we’re justified,
In confidence unfeigning,
Our cause with God is rectified,
A sure defense obtaining.
Gone, God’s anger grim;
Peace we have with Him
Through our dear Lord Christ,
Our Mediator prized:
With God He reconciled us.

2 Through Christ we have an access sure
By faith to God’s good favor.
Therein we also stand secure
The foe can harm us never.
This may certainly
Our great glory be,
That we hope possess
Of glorious blessedness,
Which God at last shall give us.

3 We glory not in this alone,
But herein too can glory:
Though tribulation we have known
And dark hath been our story,
Yet we know withal
Tribulation shall
Patience surely bring,
In cross and suffering
God’s love was e’er seen clearly.

4 Thus patience brings experience,
From which hope cometh springing,
And hope shames not in all offense,
The greater good e’er bringing.
They that hope possess
Shall find sweet redress,
And in judgment’s hour
Shame shall not overpow’r,
Nor hope leave them in ruin..

5 God hath His love shed gen’rously
Abroad by His dear Spirit
Within our heart, and utterly
From all distress hath cleared it.
The reason for this is
Our Lord Jesus Christ,
Who died for our race,
And won for us this grace,
In which we joy forever.

GERMAN
Nun wir im Glauben sind gerecht,
durch herzliches Vertrauen.
Ist unser Sach bei Gott all schlecht,
drauf mag man kühnlich bauen.
Gott zürnet mehr nit
mit ihm han wir Fried,
durch unsern Herrn Christ,
der unser Mittler ist,
hat uns mit Gott verühnet.

2 Durch Christum wir ein Zugang han
im Glauben zu der Gnade,
darinnen wir auch jetzund stahn,
kein Feind kann uns mehr schaden,
und eben darum
ist dies unser Ruhm,
daß wir Hoffnung han
zur Herrlichkeit fortan,
die Gott künftig soll geben.

3 Doch rühmen wir dies nit allein,
sondern könn uns auch rühmen,
wenn wir gleich in der Trübsal sein,
aufs allertiefst gekommen,
denn wir wissenall,
daß unser Trübsal
gwiß bringet Geduld,
dieweil man Gottes Huld
im Kreuz hat stets erfahren.

4 Also Geduld Erfahrung bringt,
draus thut Hoffnung herkommen,
die Hoffnung aber nicht versinkt,
sondern bringt große Frommen,
denn wer Hoffnung hat,
des Sach wird wohl rath,
daß er im Gericht,
werde zuschanden nicht,
Hoffnung läßt nicht verderben.

5 Gott sein Lieb ausgegossen hat
reichlich in unser Herzen,
durch seines heilgen Geistes Rath
vertriebn all unser Schmerzen,
deßen Ursach ist
der Herr Jesus CHrist,
der mit seim Tod hat
erworben diese Gnad,
der wir uns ewig freuen.

Gott hilf mir, denn das Wasser dringt

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Gott hilf mir, denn das Wasser dringt” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm XLIX, Salvum me fac Deus, with title “Christ’s heavy suffering . . . A psalm of David to precent of the roses” and melody assignment “Aus tiefer Noth schrei ich zu dir.” Luther writes of the psalm,

It is a psalm of supplication in the person of Christ when He spoke in His Passion on the cross, wherein He confessed that He was a sinner in our place (v. 7) and lamented His crucifiers and slanderers who gave Him gall and vinegar to drink in His great thirst (v. 23). Thus clear and straightforwardly He speaks of His coming suffering. Then He prophesies concerning the horrible blinding and hardening of the Jews, and final destruction (v. 24), as this all came to pass, as we see and palpably discern.

Finally, he also announces the new divine service, “I will praise God” (he says, v. 32) “and highly honor Him with thanksgiving.” This divine service is to replace the old one, for it pleases God beetter than all the bulls and the best that could be offered then, as he sings here.

GOD, save me! for unto my soul
The waters are expanding!
In mire I sink beyond control,
There is no place for standing:
Great torrents gather forcefully
And will entirely cover me
The floods will overflow me.

2 I’ve cried myself to weariness,
My throat is dried and parchèd,
My vision fails in my distress,
So long my eyes have searchèd,
And looked for God to come with speed.
I wait for Him in time of need,
Oh God, how long? I ask Thee!

3 More than the hairs upon my head
Are they that deeply hate me
Without a cause I’ve merited,
They ceaselessly berate me
And to destroy me wage their war,
With force, so that I must restore
What I had never stolen.

4 To Thee the folly is well known
Which on myself I’ve taken,
Thou know’st the sins that make me groan,
O Lord, let mercy waken!
Lord God of hosts, let proof abound
That Thou wilt nothing let confound
Those who Thy grace are waiting.

5 Lord, let no heart that seeks for Thee
Be for my sake ashamèd,
For Thee I bear hostility
And as a curse am namèd,
Shame over all my face extends,
I am a stranger to my friends
And to my mother’s children.

6 With zeal I burn most fervently,
Thy house’s glory seeking;
The vile reproaches fall on me
Of those against Thee speaking.
I fast and weep with bitterness,
To pay for sin and make redress,
Nor any thanks have for it.

7 Sackcloth of mis’ry have I worn,
The mock’ry they devisèd;
He that can best put me to scorn
Is as their master prizèd.
When at the gate their hordes recline,
Or in the tavern take their wine,
They sing a song to mock me.

8 I cried in time acceptable
To Thee with supplication:
God, in Thy mercy bountiful
Grant me Thy true salvation!
Hear in my trouble how I weep,
And help me from the mire so deep,
That I may not be drowning!

9 Lord, from my foes, who hate my soul,
From waters deep deliver!
Let not the deep consume me whole
But stay the flooding river,
And hold me up, that I may stand,
Nor let the pit beneath expand
To swallow me completely!

10 Thy lovingkindness, Lord, is good,
Therefore I pray Thee, hear me;
According to Thy multitude
Of mercies, Lord, draw near me!
Hide not Thy face from me , I pray,
Thy servant is in great dismay.
Make haste and me deliver!

11 Unto my needy soul draw nigh
To still its grievous weeping,
Deliv’rance from its pangs supply
For foes around are creeping;
Thou know’st my shame and my disgrace,
My rivals are before Thy face,
Thou know’st their mischiefs also.

12 Reproach hath made my heart to break,
And heavy-laden made me,
I hope for comfort in my ache,
But find no man to aid me.
They gave me gall instead of food,
And in my thirst a bev’rage crude
Of vinegar they gave me.

13 Their table let become their snare,
Rebuke, and vindication,
And let their eyes be darkened e’er
And blind to all creation;
Their loins make evermore to shake,
Thy jar of wrath upon them break,
And let Thine anger take them!

14 Their tents let all be desolate,
With no man left to share them!
If thou smite men of low estate,
Thy surely shall not spare them;
They boast with talk that never ends,
And claim they are God’s dearest friends,
While suff’ring strikes the lowly.

15 Let them from sin to sin progress
Until they perish yonder;
Let them not find Thy graciousness,
But let it from them wander,
And blot them from the book of life,
And cut them in their errors rife
Off from the saintly number.

16 But I am poor, and deeply grieve;
Lord, help, and upward raise me,
Unto Thy name my thanks I’ll give,
And magnify and praise Thee.
And this shall please Thee better, Lord,
Than beasts with hoofs and blood outpoured
Upon Thine holy altar.

17 This shall the humble people see
And joyfully adore Him,
And they that seek God faithfully—
Their heart shall live before Him,
The Lord doth hear the poor man’s cries,
Nor doth His prisoners despise,
Who heartily have sought Him.

18 Let heav’n and earth in chorus sing
Their praise to God forever,
The seas and every moving thing
Acclaim His grace and favor!
For God will build His city fair
And Judah save, to furnish there
By grace a home for Zion.

19 How bright th’ inheritance obtained
By those in Him confiding,
Who fear Him with a heart unstained,
Who firmly trust His guiding!
His faithful servant’s holy seed,
And all who love His name indeed—
They shall therein be dwelling!

GERMAN
GOtt hilff mir, denn das Waſſer dringt
Mir biß an meine Seele,
In tieffem Schlamm, ich gar verſinck,
In der grundloſen Höhle,
Die Ström gehn her gewaltiglich
Und wollen gar bedecken mich,
Die Fluth will mich erſäuffen.

2  Ich hab mich müd geſchrien zwar,
Mein Hals iſt mir gantz heiſcher,
Das Gſicht vergeht mir gantz und gar,
So ſehr werd ich gekreiſchet,
Ich ſeh mich umb nach meinem Gott,
Der mir zuſpring in ſolcher Noth,
Ach Gott, wie lang ſols wären?

3  Auff meim Häupt ſind nicht ſo viel Haar,
Als derer, die mich haſſen,
Ohn Ursach unverſchuldet fürwahr,
Sie wollen nicht ablaſſen,
Mit großer Macht sie mich anfalln,
Mich zu verderbn, ich muß bezaln,
Was ich nicht hab geraubet.

4  Dir ist die Thorheit wohl bekannt,
Die ich auff mich geladen,
Du weiſt mein Schulden alleſampt,
Ach HErr erzeig mir Gnade,
Beweis an mir HErr Zebaoth,
Daß du nicht leſt werden zu Spott,
Die deiner Gnade warten.

5  An mir nicht ſchamrot werden laß,
Die dich von Hertzen ſuchen,
Umb deinetwillen trag ich Haß
Und muß mich lan verfluchen,
Mein Angeſicht iſt voller Schand,
Meinn Freunden bin ich unbekant.
Und meiner Mutter Kindern.

6  Ich eyffer gantz inbrünſtiglich
Umb deines Hauſes Ehre,
Die Schmach der Leſtrer fellt auff mich,
Krenkt mich im Hertzen ſehre,
Ich faſt und weine bitterlich,
Die Sünd zu büſſen mächtiglich,
Kan doch kein Danck verdienen.

7  Den Sack des Elends zog ich an,
Den Spott ſie daraus treiben,
Wer meim am ſehrſten ſpotten kan,
Der wil hie Meiſter bleiben.
Wenn ſie am Tor beiſammen ſeyn,
Odr ſitzen ſonſt beim külen Wein,
Ein Lied ſie von mir ſingen.

8  Ich rieff zur angenehmen Zeit
Zu dir, mein Gott und HErre,
Durch deine groſſe Gütigkeit
Mich trewer Hülff gewere,
Erhöre mich in dieſer Noth,

Umb meiner Feinde Willen,
Du weiſt Herr meine Schmach und Schand,
Mein Feinde ſind dir allbekant
Und ihre Tück deßgleichen.

12  Mich krenkts, die Schmach bricht mir mein Hertz,
Wart obs jammert jemanden,
Ich hoff auff Troſt in meinem Schmertz,
Da iſt niemand verhanden,
Mit Gallen werd ich abgespeiſt,
Den Eſſig man mich trincken heiſt,
Wenn ich für Durſt verſchmachte.

13  Ihr Tiſch zum Strick ihnn werden muß,
Zur Rach und Straff auff Erden,
Ihr Augen ſchlag mit Finsternus,
Daß sie verblendet werden,
Las ihre Lenden wancken frü,
Dein Zorn und Ungnad geuß auff ſie,
Dein Grimm, HErr, sie ergreiffe.

14  Laß ihre Hütten wüſte ſtahn,
Daß niemand drinnen wohne,
Wenn du ſchlegſt auf ein armen Mann,
Wolln ſie ſein auch nicht ſchonen,
Rühmen ſich denn von Stunden an,
Als weren ſie mit Gott wohl dran,
Weil jene trifft das Leiden.

15  Laß ſie aus einer Sünden ſchwer
Nur fallen in die ander,
Dein Gnad zu ihnen ſich nicht kehr,
Sie muß von ihnen wandern,
Außm Buch des Lebens tilg ſie gar,
Daß ſie mit der gerechten Schar
Nicht angeſchrieben werden.

16  Ich bin elend, und mir iſt angſt,
Dein Hülff, HErr, rett mein Leben,
Ich wil deim Namen ſagen Danck,
Lob, Ehr und Preiß ihm geben,
Das wird dir baß gefallen zwar,
Als wenn ich brecht zu deim Altar
Ein Farren groſſ mit Klawen.

17  Wenn ſolchs der Elend ſchawet an,
Wird er in Frewden ſchweben,
Die Gott mit Trewen zugethan,
Derr Hertz für ihm wird leben,
Der HErr erhört des Armen Bitt,
Verachtet ſeine Gfangnen nit,
Die ihn von Hertzen ſuchen.

18  Es lobe Gott mit groſſem Schall
Der Himmel und die Erden,
Was lebt im Meer und überall,
Sein Nam gerühmt muß werden,
Denn Gott wird bawen ſeine Stadt,
Und Juda helffen in Gnad,
Daß man zu Zion wohne.

19  Das wird ein ſchönes Erbe ſeyn
Für die, ſo ihm vertrawen,
Die ihn fürchten mit Hertzen rein
Und auff ihn feſte bawen,
Sein trewer Knecht, der heilig Sam,
Und all, die lieben ſeinen Namn,
Die werden drinnen bleiben.

Es ist vollbracht! Vergiß ja nicht (supplement)

Here is my supplemental translation and composite rendering of the translations of Russell and Mueller, of the Passion hymn, “Es ist vollbracht! Vergiß ja nicht” (Johann Eusebius Schmidt, d. 1745), first appearing in Freylinghausen 1714, attested by the author himself (Wetzel, Hymnop. III, p. 83), to whom the proper melody is also ascribed. The translation by A. T. Russell of stanzas 1–3 and 5 is according to this original meter. The translation of Mueller for Selah Song-Book of stanzas 1–4 is in 88.88.88 (Vater unser) and therefore unusable. Yet his preference for the scriptural (KJV) wording to begin each stanza seems better than Russell’s “All is fulfilled,” so I have normalized this across all stanzas,

’TIS finished! Now my heart, record
The dying words of thy dear Lord.
When He those bitter pains sustainèd,
Which on the cross thy life obtainèd,
He who did all things well then bowed His head,
Exclaiming: "It is finishèd."

2 ’Tis finished! For the cross hath wrought
Whate’er the Law and prophets taught.
Where all the strength of nature failèd,
There Jesus’ wounds for all availèd.
What God before the worlds had counselèd,
Now through His death is finishèd.

3 ’Tis finished! All is satisfied:
The Father lays His wrath aside;
Our peace is made, and justice stillèd,
Since God’s own Son hath all fulfillèd.
What then shall wake the heart to anxious dread?
Believe now: "It is finishèd."

4 ’Tis finished! What then shall I do?
What, Jesus, shall I add thereto?
Oh, nothing! Thanks but to Thy merit;
Thy righteous work I now inherit.
What day and night I do, by Spirit sped,
That too by Thee is finishèd!

5 ’Tis finished! I am now made free
Possessed of true felicity:
Now Jesus sin and death subdueth,
And us with life and grace reneweth;
So when to dissolution worlds are led,
This stays us: “It is finishèd."

6 ’Tis finished! Now my heart, record
The dying words of thy dear Lord,
And let it ever serve and aid thee,
To finish what shall best become thee.
For all thy days be this rememberèd,
That Christ saith: “It is finishèd.”

Tr. 1–3, 5, A. T. Russell.

MUELLER
’Tis finished! So the Savior cried,
As on the cross for me He died;
It was a shout of victory,
That set a world in bondage free;
O hear, my soul: Salvation’s won!
’Tis finished! Jesus’ work is done.

2 ’Tis finished! What a word of joy!
The law’s demandsa are finished now.
The debt is canceled, I am free,
For Christ has paid the penalty.
O hear, my soul: Salvation’s won!
’Tis finished! Jesus’ work is done.

3 ’Tis finished! O ye sinners, hear!
Come, cast aside your doubt and fear.
Sin is atoned, God’s wrath is stilled,
For Jesus’ precious blood is spilled.
O hear it all: Salvation’s won!
’Tis finished! Jesus’ work is done.

4 ’Tis finished! Not one work remains!
Free grace abounds, and mercy reigns.
Christ’s merits are my righteousness,
My strength and comfort and my dress.
O hear it all: Salvation’s won
’Tis finished! Jesus’ work is done.

RUSSELL
All is fulfilled—my heart, record
The dying words of thy dear Lord.
When He those bitter pains sustainèd,
Which on the cross thy life obtainèd,
He who did all things well,
Then bowed His head,
Exclaiming, "It is finishèd."

2 All is fulfilled—the cross hath wrought
Whate’er the Law and prophets taught.
Where all the strength of nature failèd,
There Jesu’s wounds for all availèd.
That which before the worlds
Heav’n counselèd,
Now through His death is finishèd.

3 All is fulfilled—all satisfied:
The Father lays His wrath aside;
Our peace is made, and justice stillèd,
Since God’s own Son hath all fulfillèd.
What then shall wake the heart

1 Es ist vollbracht! Vergiß ja nicht
dies Wort, mein Herz, das Jesus spricht,
da er am Kreuze für dich stirbet
und dir die Seligkeit erwirbet,
da er, der alles, alles wohlgemacht,
nunmehro spricht: es ist vollbracht.

2 Es ist vollbracht am Kreuze dort
Gesetz und der Propheten Wort:
was wir niemals vollbringen konnten,
ist nun vollbracht durch Jesu Wunden:
was Gottes Rath von Ewigkeit bedacht,

Was soll ich nun
darzu noch, o mein Jesu, thun?
Nichts, nichts! Denn was von dir geschehen,

ich habe schon die Seligkeit;
weil Sünd und Tod sind weggenommen,
ist Gnad und Leben wiederkommen;

daß du vollbringst, was dir will ziemen.
