Wer dort den Engeln gleich

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wer dort den Engeln gleich” (L. Laurentii, 1700), from the author’s Evangelia melodica for St. Michael’s Day, the first of two hymns. Unusually for this meter, odd lines are rhymed as well as even. (Posted on the Eve or Vigil of St. Michael’s Day.)

Mel.:
Nun danket alle Gott.

WHO would like angels be,

Indeed, like God excelling,

In Jesus’ kingdom, he

Must first on earth be dwelling

A child of humble mind,

Of poor and lowly clay;

Grace he alone will find

Who heeds the humble way.

2 He must converted be,

Yea, born again from heaven,

As Christ says faithfully.

No other path is given

To gain that life aright

Which is of God’s decree.

Who liveth in faith’s light,

A Christian true is he.

3 The worldly live at ease,

And think amid their sinning

That God they still can please

And find a pathway winning

To heaven’s open gate,

Though none converted be

Within the inner state,

God speaks far diff’rently!

4 Forth in offense secure

With haughty spirit living,

They yet believe for sure

God will to them be giving

His heav’n when ends this strife;

But oh, how far thou art,

Poor worldling, from that life

That pleases Jesus’ heart!

5 Woe to the worldly dust

That gives offense unhalting!

Woe to the one in lust

And sin himself exalting!

Woe to offenders all

Of those who Christ believe,

Yes, woe to those who small

And faithful ones aggrieve!

6 Woe to the wicked world

Because of its offenses!

What brimstone will be hurled

On them when wrath commences,

As once in Sodom, and

In judgment them devour!

Thy doom is near at hand!

Behold the little hour!

7 O Jesus, let me o’er

Myself be here victorious

And humbly come before

Thy throne in heaven glorious,

An innocent and child

Obedient unto Thee,

In spirit meek and mild,

With all simplicity.

8 Thus am I great indeed

And shall be greater growing,

If, where the Spirit lead,

I ever shall be going;

Though wretched, poor, and small

Before the world I stand,

I shall in heaven’s hall

With Christ be great and grand.

GERMAN

Wer dort den Engeln gleich,

ja Gott will ähnlich werden,

in Christi Königreich,

der muß auf diese Erden

erst werden als ein Kind,

ganz niedrig, arm und klein,

wiel der nur Gnade findt,

der so sich stellet ein.

2 Er muß ganz umgekehrt,

ja werden neugeboren,

wie Jesus selber lehrt,

sonst gehet er verloren,

und kommt zum Leben nicht,

das von Gott selber ist;

wer lebt im Glaubenslicht,

der ist ein wahrer Christ.

3 Es meint die eitle Welt,

daß bei gewohnten Sünden,

sie dennoch Gott gefällt,

und daß sie könne finden

zum Himmel eine Spur,

ob sie gleich nicht umkehrt

im Stande der Natur,

da Gott doch anders lehrt.

4 Sie fährt in Ärgernis

und Hoffart fort im Leben,

und doch meint sie gewiß,

daß Gott ihr werde geben

den Himmel nach der Zeit,

allein elende Welt!

du bist vom Leben weit,

das Jesu wohl gefällt.

5 Weh dem, der ärgerlich

auf dieser Erden lebet!

Ja, wehe dem, der sich

im Sündenkoth erhebet!

Weh dem, der ärgert den,

der gläubt und Jesum liebt,

ja auch den Kleinesten;

weh dem, der ihn betrübt!

6 O weh der bösen Welt!

der Ärgernissen wegen,

wenn Gott das Urtheil fällt,

so wird ein Schwefelregen

sie, wie dort Sodoma,

verzehren im Gericht’

ja dein Gericht ist nah,

denk, daß es bald einbricht.

7 O Jesu, gieb, daß ich

mich selber überwinde,

und ganz demüthiglich

für deinem thron mich finde,

unmündig, als ein Kind,

gehorsam nach Gebühr,

sanftmüthig und gelind,

einfältig für und für.

8 So bin ich groß genug,

und werde größer werden,

wenn ich des Geistes Zug

stets folg auf dieser Erden,

bin ich den schlecht und klein,

und elend vor der Welt,

so werd ich herrlich sein,

und groß im Himmelszelt!
