Da Jesus Christus unser Schuld

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Da Jesus Christus unser Schuld” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm LXIX, Salvum me fac, with title “A supplication of Christ against the Jews and enemies of the Gospel.” The Ionian/major melody by Waldis follows the iambic meter 848.848.84.848 (AABCCBDDEEE), of which this is the only instance in his Psalter.

WHEN Jesus willed our guilt to bear
And us to spare,
To cross and shame He bowed His head,
His Godhead hid in aspect mild
Of man defiled;
Cried out to God the Lord and said:
Help me, O God,  pain and distress
Now sorely press,
Like mighty floods the agony
Will swallow me,
My life is threatened utterly.

2 I sank within the miry ground,
And wholly drowned,
Calamity engulfed me then;
I cried so long, my voice was hoarse,
Great pain did coarse
Through all my flesh  oppressed by sin;
My count’nance fell, my heart and sense
Departed hence,
So that in such distress and dread
As though one dead
I must wait long for God, my Head.

3 My causeless enemies by far
More num’rous are
Than hairs wherewith my head is fraught;
They do me wrong without a cause
Against Thy laws;
I must repay what I stole not.
O God, Thou know’st  right well that I
Now wholly lie
In others’ sins upon me thrown,
As now I own
With all my heart, and to Thee groan.

4 I pray, Lord, now for all these here
Who see me clear
Thus suff’ring in such feebleness,
That they may not offended be,
Nor fall from Thee
In faith, as soon might come to pass.
That I must suffer  scorn of men
And pay for sin,
O Lord of Hosts, Thy will hath made:
Lord God, give aid,
For Thee disgrace on me is laid!

5 My brothers and My mother’s son
My presence shun,
Forsake me, and will me not know.
Therefore hath zeal consumèd me
For praise of Thee
Sin brings me to the brink of woe,
Those who reproach Thee thereby bring
Me many_a sting,
I weep and fast, in sackcloth pray
Both night and day,
While all men evil of me say.

6 Men in the streets and taverns mock,
Against me talk,
While I in pray’r, Lord, call on Thee,
Thou helpest me in season due,
When griefs pursue,
And from the filth deliv’rest me,
Lest in distress  and doom I fall
And drown withal.
Yea, rather from my foes who press
I help possess
In God, who saves in all distress.

7 Let not the water-floods o’erflow
Nor bring me woe
Nor drown me in their waters deep;
Let not the pit consume me whole
Nor death my soul
Devour, nor in its belly keep.
Hear me, O Lord,  I cry to Thee,
Turn unto me,
Thy help and comfort let descend,
Thy mercy lend,
And all my sorrows here amend!

8 Hide from Thy servant not Thy face,
Nor needed grace,
But in my trouble help Thou me;
Come speedily, my soul to aid,
By foes waylaid,
And let me Thy deliv’rance see!
Thou knowest my  disgrace and shame,
How foes defame
And mock me, and my life oppose!
They me enclose
And break my heart with countless woes.

9 In pain mine eyes the crowds survey,
If but I may
Find one who pities my distress,
And who to my relief will run,
But there is none,
From whom I comfort may possess.
I bear disgrace  upon my head,
With gall am fed,
I thirst, but vinegar receive,
Thirst to relieve,
In death men still would me aggrieve.

10 Their synagogue and doctrine dim
Let be to them
A trap, and take them as a snare;
In darkness let them blinded be,
Lest they should see
The truth of God and Scripture fair.
Upon them pour  Thy fury now,
Their bane be Thou,
Make desolate their house and land,
And where they stand
And burn their houses as a brand.

11 For they see that Thou, God, hast me
So utterly
Forsaken, as Thy hated foe,
They boast that Thou dost me despise
And mock’st my cries,
When grief upon me they bestow.
Therefore they shout,  aggrieving me
As if I Thee
Forsook, and therefore Thou didst smite
And wound me quite,
And count me sinful Thy sight.

12 Because so hardened they remain
In causing pain,
Let them and all their deeds proceed,
Let naught in them be good or just,
Leave them in lust,
And never turn, lest they be freed!
Them from the band  of Thine elect
Do Thou eject,
Their names blot from Thy book of grace,
Exile their race,
Nor in Thy kingdom give them place!

13 Though I am poor before Thy sight,
Thou with Thy might
Dost help me in Thy needful hour;
That I the glory of Thy name
May loud proclaim,
Who pardon’st sin despite hell’s pow’r.
This praise shall please  Thee better than
The oxen slain,
As ordered in th’ old covenant;
Thou didst supplant
All this and Isr’el’s government.

14 Therefore the heavens worship Thee,
The earth and sea
And all therein Thy praises pay,
That Thou, O God, to help art wont,
And by Thy font
Thou dost a good foundation lay.
Thereon Thy Church  complete and pure,
Thou makest sure,
Wherein Thy Holy Word is sown,
That, ne’er o’erthrown,
Stands ever by Thy pow’r alone.

GERMAN
Da Jesus Christus unser schuldt
Bezalen wolt,
Begab sich biß ins Creutzes schmach,
Verbarg er sein götlich gewalt,
in Sünders gstalt,

All pein und schmertzen uberlaufft,
Mein gsicht vergeht, mein mut und sinn
Ist gar dahin,
Daß ich in solcher angst und not,
Und in dem todt,
So lang muß harrn auff meinen Gott.

3 Die mich on ursach hassen sehr,
Der ist vil mehr,
Dann ich har hab auff meinem haupt:
Verderben mich on alle schuldt,
In meiner gdult,
Muß zalen das ich nicht geraubt.
Mein HERR, mein Got, du weyst gar wol,
Daß ich bin vol
Der missethat und frembden sünd,
DIe ich jetzund
Vor dir beknn auß hertzengrund.

4 Ich bitt jetz HERR für alle die,
Die mich allhie,
In solcher schwacheyt leiden sehn:
Daß sie sich nit ergern an mir,
Abfalln von dir
Im glauben, wie das möcht geschehn,
Daß ich die schmach jetz leiden muß,
Der sünden buß,
Ist alls dein will HERR ZEbaoth,
Hilff Herre Got,
Umb deintwilln leyd ich schand und spott.

5 Mein brüder und meine mutterkind,
Abgfallen sind
Von mir, und wölln mich kennen nicht,
Darumb frißt mich der Eifer sehr,
Umb deine ehr,
Die sünd hat mich schier hingericht,
Die schmach dern, die da schmehen dich,
Felt gar auff mich,
Ich weyn und fast, zieh an einn sack,
Bet nacht und tag,
Doch spott mein jeder wer da mag.

6 Auff den strassen und bei dem wein,
Spottet man mein,
Dieweil bett ich zu dir mein Got:
Du hilffst mir auch zu rechter zeit,
Auß allem leyd,
Errettest mich HERR auß dem kot,
Daß ich im unglück nit versinck,
Und gar ertrinck,
Sondern von meiner feind beschwerd,
Noch hie auff erd,
Von mir mein Got geholffen werd.

7 Auff das mich nit die flut verschling,
Und gar umbbring,
Ersauff in diesem wasser hoch:
Daß nit die grub des unfals gar,
Und todesgfahr,
Verdruck in diesem tieffen loch,
Erhör mich HERR, ich schrei zu dir,
Wend dich zu mir,
Dein tröstlich hülff und gütigkeyt
Sei mir bereyt,
Nach deinr grossen barmhertzigkeyt.

8 Vor deinem knecht verbirg doch nicth
Dein angesicht,
Komm mir zu hülff in dieser not:
Mach dich zu meiner seel alhie,
Erlöse sie,
Umb meiner feinde willn, O Got,
Du weyst mein schmach, mein schand und scham,
Wie feind, wie gram,
Mir meine widersacher sein,
Solch schmach und pein,
Krenckt und zerbricht das hertze mein.

9 In meim leiden seh ich umbher,
Ob jemand wer,
Dem mein elend zu hertzen gieng:
Und der mir reycht der hülffe handt,
Da ist niemandt,
Von dem ich einign trost empfieng,
Zu dem wirt mir solch hon beweist,
Mit gallen gspeist,
In meim durst wirt mir essig gschenckt,
Damit getrenckt,
Und wirt mein leben gar gekrenckt.

10 Ir Synagog, predigt und ler,
Müß vor in her,
Zum fallstrick werden uber sie:
Im finsterniß laß sie hingehn,
Dass nit verstehn
Die warheyt und die schrifft alhie,
Geuß auff sie deinn zorn und ungnad,
Und sei ir schad,
Mach wüst ir wonung und ir land,
Machs alls zuschand,
Ir stätt und häuser außgebrandt.

11 Weil sie sehen, daß du mich hast
Gleichwie einn gast,
Verlassen, als wöltstu mein nicht:
Rhümen sie, daß du mich verachtst,
Meins unglücks lachst,
Wann ich von in wird hingericht,
Drumb schreiens hui und ängsten mich,
Als het ich dich,
Verlassen, daß du mich drumb schlügst,
Mir nichts vertrügst,
Und solchs für meine sünd zufügst.

12 Weil sie nu so verstocket sein,
Zur rach und pein,
Laß faren hin in irem thun:
Laß in nichts bleiben recht noch gut,
Verker irn mut,
Daß sie kommen zu keiner sühn,
Verwirff sie auß der frommen zal,
Nur alzumal,
Ins gnaden buch sie nimmer schreib,
Sondern vertreib,
Daß keyner in deim Reiche bleib.

13 Ob ich gleich elend bin vor dir,
Doch hilffstu mir,
Nimst mich in deiner gnaden schutz:
Daß ich deins Namens ehr verkünd,
Der mir die sünd
Vergibt widr allen hellschen trutz,
Solch preiß wirt baß gefallen dir,
Dann ferre stier,
Opffer im alten Testament,
Welchs hat sein end,
Mit gantzem Judschen Regiment.

14 Drumb lob dichs gantze himlisch heer,
Erd und das meer,
Und alles das sich drinnen regt:
Daß du Got hilffest Zion auff,
Und durch die Tauff,
Zum newen baw der grund wirt glegt,
Darauff gebawt dein heilge Kirch,
Der Gottes pfirch,
Drinn wirt dein heilges wort geseet,
Welchs nit zergeht,
Durch dein krafft Ewiglich besteht.

Gott hilf mir, denn das Wasser dringt

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Gott hilf mir, denn das Wasser dringt” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm XLIX, Salvum me fac Deus, with title “Christ’s heavy suffering . . . A psalm of David to precent of the roses” and melody assignment “Aus tiefer Noth schrei ich zu dir.” Luther writes of the psalm,

It is a psalm of supplication in the person of Christ when He spoke in His Passion on the cross, wherein He confessed that He was a sinner in our place (v. 7) and lamented His crucifiers and slanderers who gave Him gall and vinegar to drink in His great thirst (v. 23). Thus clear and straightforwardly He speaks of His coming suffering. Then He prophesies concerning the horrible blinding and hardening of the Jews, and final destruction (v. 24), as this all came to pass, as we see and palpably discern.

Finally, he also announces the new divine service, “I will praise God” (he says, v. 32) “and highly honor Him with thanksgiving.” This divine service is to replace the old one, for it pleases God beetter than all the bulls and the best that could be offered then, as he sings here.

GOD, save me! for unto my soul
The waters are expanding!
In mire I sink beyond control,
There is no place for standing:
Great torrents gather forcefully
And will entirely cover me
The floods will overflow me.

2 I’ve cried myself to weariness,
My throat is dried and parchèd,
My vision fails in my distress,
So long my eyes have searchèd,
And looked for God to come with speed.
I wait for Him in time of need,
Oh God, how long? I ask Thee!

3 More than the hairs upon my head
Are they that deeply hate me
Without a cause I’ve merited,
They ceaselessly berate me
And to destroy me wage their war,
With force, so that I must restore
What I had never stolen.

4 To Thee the folly is well known
Which on myself I’ve taken,
Thou know’st the sins that make me groan,
O Lord, let mercy waken!
Lord God of hosts, let proof abound
That Thou wilt nothing let confound
Those who Thy grace are waiting.

5 Lord, let no heart that seeks for Thee
Be for my sake ashamèd,
For Thee I bear hostility
And as a curse am namèd,
Shame over all my face extends,
I am a stranger to my friends
And to my mother’s children.

6 With zeal I burn most fervently,
Thy house’s glory seeking;
The vile reproaches fall on me
Of those against Thee speaking.
I fast and weep with bitterness,
To pay for sin and make redress,
Nor any thanks have for it.

7 Sackcloth of mis’ry have I worn,
The mock’ry they devisèd;
He that can best put me to scorn
Is as their master prizèd.
When at the gate their hordes recline,
Or in the tavern take their wine,
They sing a song to mock me.

8 I cried in time acceptable
To Thee with supplication:
God, in Thy mercy bountiful
Grant me Thy true salvation!
Hear in my trouble how I weep,
And help me from the mire so deep,
That I may not be drowning!

9 Lord, from my foes, who hate my soul,
From waters deep deliver!
Let not the deep consume me whole
But stay the flooding river,
And hold me up, that I may stand,
Nor let the pit beneath expand
To swallow me completely!

10 Thy lovingkindness, Lord, is good,
Therefore I pray Thee, hear me;
According to Thy multitude
Of mercies, Lord, draw near me!
Hide not Thy face from me , I pray,
Thy servant is in great dismay.
Make haste and me deliver!

11 Unto my needy soul draw nigh
To still its grievous weeping,
Deliv’rance from its pangs supply
For foes around are creeping;
Thou know’st my shame and my disgrace,
My rivals are before Thy face,
Thou know’st their mischiefs also.

12 Reproach hath made my heart to break,
And heavy-laden made me,
I hope for comfort in my ache,
But find no man to aid me.
They gave me gall instead of food,
And in my thirst a bev’rage crude
Of vinegar they gave me.

13 Their table let become their snare,
Rebuke, and vindication,
And let their eyes be darkened e’er
And blind to all creation;
Their loins make evermore to shake,
Thy jar of wrath upon them break,
And let Thine anger take them!

14 Their tents let all be desolate,
With no man left to share them!
If thou smite men of low estate,
Thy surely shall not spare them;
They boast with talk that never ends,
And claim they are God’s dearest friends,
While suff’ring strikes the lowly.

15 Let them from sin to sin progress
Until they perish yonder;
Let them not find Thy graciousness,
But let it from them wander,
And blot them from the book of life,
And cut them in their errors rife
Off from the saintly number.

16 But I am poor, and deeply grieve;
Lord, help, and upward raise me,
Unto Thy name my thanks I’ll give,
And magnify and praise Thee.
And this shall please Thee better, Lord,
Than beasts with hoofs and blood outpoured
Upon Thine holy altar.

17 This shall the humble people see
And joyfully adore Him,
And they that seek God faithfully—
Their heart shall live before Him,
The Lord doth hear the poor man’s cries,
Nor doth His prisoners despise,
Who heartily have sought Him.

18 Let heav’n and earth in chorus sing
Their praise to God forever,
The seas and every moving thing
Acclaim His grace and favor!
For God will build His city fair
And Judah save, to furnish there
By grace a home for Zion.

19 How bright th’ inheritance obtained
By those in Him confiding,
Who fear Him with a heart unstained,
Who firmly trust His guiding!
His faithful servant’s holy seed,
And all who love His name indeed—
They shall therein be dwelling!

GERMAN
GOtt hilff mir, denn das Waſſer dringt
Mir biß an meine Seele,
In tieffem Schlamm, ich gar verſinck,
In der grundloſen Höhle,
Die Ström gehn her gewaltiglich
Und wollen gar bedecken mich,
Die Fluth will mich erſäuffen.

2  Ich hab mich müd geſchrien zwar,
Mein Hals iſt mir gantz heiſcher,
Das Gſicht vergeht mir gantz und gar,
So ſehr werd ich gekreiſchet,
Ich ſeh mich umb nach meinem Gott,
Der mir zuſpring in ſolcher Noth,
Ach Gott, wie lang ſols wären?

3  Auff meim Häupt ſind nicht ſo viel Haar,
Als derer, die mich haſſen,
Ohn Ursach unverſchuldet fürwahr,
Sie wollen nicht ablaſſen,
Mit großer Macht sie mich anfalln,
Mich zu verderbn, ich muß bezaln,
Was ich nicht hab geraubet.

4  Dir ist die Thorheit wohl bekannt,
Die ich auff mich geladen,
Du weiſt mein Schulden alleſampt,
Ach HErr erzeig mir Gnade,
Beweis an mir HErr Zebaoth,
Daß du nicht leſt werden zu Spott,
Die deiner Gnade warten.

5  An mir nicht ſchamrot werden laß,
Die dich von Hertzen ſuchen,
Umb deinetwillen trag ich Haß
Und muß mich lan verfluchen,
Mein Angeſicht iſt voller Schand,
Meinn Freunden bin ich unbekant.
Und meiner Mutter Kindern.

6  Ich eyffer gantz inbrünſtiglich
Umb deines Hauſes Ehre,
Die Schmach der Leſtrer fellt auff mich,
Krenkt mich im Hertzen ſehre,
Ich faſt und weine bitterlich,
Die Sünd zu büſſen mächtiglich,
Kan doch kein Danck verdienen.

7  Den Sack des Elends zog ich an,
Den Spott ſie daraus treiben,
Wer meim am ſehrſten ſpotten kan,
Der wil hie Meiſter bleiben.
Wenn ſie am Tor beiſammen ſeyn,
Odr ſitzen ſonſt beim külen Wein,
Ein Lied ſie von mir ſingen.

8  Ich rieff zur angenehmen Zeit
Zu dir, mein Gott und HErre,
Durch deine groſſe Gütigkeit
Mich trewer Hülff gewere,
Erhöre mich in dieſer Noth,

Umb meiner Feinde Willen,
Du weiſt Herr meine Schmach und Schand,
Mein Feinde ſind dir allbekant
Und ihre Tück deßgleichen.

12  Mich krenkts, die Schmach bricht mir mein Hertz,
Wart obs jammert jemanden,
Ich hoff auff Troſt in meinem Schmertz,
Da iſt niemand verhanden,
Mit Gallen werd ich abgespeiſt,
Den Eſſig man mich trincken heiſt,
Wenn ich für Durſt verſchmachte.

13  Ihr Tiſch zum Strick ihnn werden muß,
Zur Rach und Straff auff Erden,
Ihr Augen ſchlag mit Finsternus,
Daß sie verblendet werden,
Las ihre Lenden wancken frü,
Dein Zorn und Ungnad geuß auff ſie,
Dein Grimm, HErr, sie ergreiffe.

14  Laß ihre Hütten wüſte ſtahn,
Daß niemand drinnen wohne,
Wenn du ſchlegſt auf ein armen Mann,
Wolln ſie ſein auch nicht ſchonen,
Rühmen ſich denn von Stunden an,
Als weren ſie mit Gott wohl dran,
Weil jene trifft das Leiden.

15  Laß ſie aus einer Sünden ſchwer
Nur fallen in die ander,
Dein Gnad zu ihnen ſich nicht kehr,
Sie muß von ihnen wandern,
Außm Buch des Lebens tilg ſie gar,
Daß ſie mit der gerechten Schar
Nicht angeſchrieben werden.

16  Ich bin elend, und mir iſt angſt,
Dein Hülff, HErr, rett mein Leben,
Ich wil deim Namen ſagen Danck,
Lob, Ehr und Preiß ihm geben,
Das wird dir baß gefallen zwar,
Als wenn ich brecht zu deim Altar
Ein Farren groſſ mit Klawen.

17  Wenn ſolchs der Elend ſchawet an,
Wird er in Frewden ſchweben,
Die Gott mit Trewen zugethan,
Derr Hertz für ihm wird leben,
Der HErr erhört des Armen Bitt,
Verachtet ſeine Gfangnen nit,
Die ihn von Hertzen ſuchen.

18  Es lobe Gott mit groſſem Schall
Der Himmel und die Erden,
Was lebt im Meer und überall,
Sein Nam gerühmt muß werden,
Denn Gott wird bawen ſeine Stadt,
Und Juda helffen in Gnad,
Daß man zu Zion wohne.

19  Das wird ein ſchönes Erbe ſeyn
Für die, ſo ihm vertrawen,
Die ihn fürchten mit Hertzen rein
Und auff ihn feſte bawen,
Sein trewer Knecht, der heilig Sam,
Und all, die lieben ſeinen Namn,
Die werden drinnen bleiben.
