Gott Vater! deine Liebesflammen

Here is my translation of the Trinitarian hymn “Gott Vater! deine Liebesflammen” (Erdmann Neumeister, d. 1756), Ev.-luth. Gsb #635. Fischer has no entry. It appears in the author’s Psalmen und Lobgesänge (1754), p. 160, with indication of the melody “Wer nur den lieben Gott.” The Wisconsin Hymnal, indicating the same melody, has this Trinitarian prayer among Death and Burial hymns, suggesting its use a final confession of faith.

 

O FATHER! Flames of Thy affection
The happy spirit fervent make,
And forge in us a deep connection;
No fall this covenant can break;
Thus love’s desiring finds its Stay:
Thou art my heritage for aye.

2 O Son! Thy suff’ring and Thy dying,
Thy life and reign, are all for me,
My life obtaining and supplying;
Thou lovest me, and I love Thee;
Thus faith with blessing finds its Stay:
Thou art my heritage for aye.

3 O Holy Spirit! Consolation
Light, life, and all the soul delights
Thou givest to Thy dear creation,
And leadest me to blessed heights.
Thus hope with gladness finds its Stay:
Thou art my heritage for aye.

Gott Vater! deine Liebesflammen
entzünden den vergnügten Geist
und fügen mich und dich zusammen,
daß diesen Bund kein Fall zerreißt;
so trifft der Liebe Sehnsucht ein:
du wirst mein ewig Erbgut sein.

2 Gott Sohn! du bist für mich gestorben,
du lebst und herrschest auch für mich;
mir, mir hast du das Heil erworben,
du liebst mich, ich liebe dich;
so trifft der Glaube selig ein:
du wirst mein ewig Erbgut sein.

3 Gott heilger Geist! Licht, Trost und leben
und was die Seele sonst erfreut,
ist Alles mir von dir gegeben,
du leitest mich zur Seligkeit.
So trifft die Hoffnung fröhlich ein:
du wirst mein ewig Erbgut sein.
