Here is my translation of the hymn, “Das Kindlein Jesus ist gesetzt” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for the First Sunday after Christmas.

Mel.: Christum wir sollen loben schon.

THE Infant Jesus Christ is set
And so abides, though often met
By many, who shall take offense
And fall in feeble diffidence.

2 Though lowly be His outward state,
He counts no mortal virtue great,
And thus offends works-righteous all,
Who, spurning Him, devise their fall.

3 But he who knows his sins offend,
And sees how, from the start to end,
His body_and soul are sore defiled—
He cleaveth to the dear Christ-child.

4 Christ with His Word stands for a sign,
At which the foe, with vision fine,
Shoots all his arrows swift and fell
From many_a bow in earth and hell.

5 Earth’s factions find no common ground,
But when this Babe is to be found,
Then Salem’s whole assembled horde
Leaps to the fray with one accord.

6 And Mary feels great sorrows too,
A sword her soul doth pierce clean through,
The Holy Church afflicted grieves
As she false brothers’ hearts perceives.

7 Oh, help us that we may not fall,
But firmly hold the Christ-child small!
Let no objection turn us, God;
Preserve us to Thy praise and laud.

und bleibt unumgestoßen stets,
daran sich viel ärgern und falln,
viel sich in Schwachheit an es haln.

2 Sein äußerlich Gestalt ist klein,
läßt doch nichts groß an andern sein:
das verdreußt die Werkheilgen all,
verachten es mit großem Fall.

3 Aber wer seine Sünd erkennt,
und sicht von Anfang bis zum End,
wie Leib und Seel verderbet sein,
der hält sich an das Jesulein.

4 Das steht zum Zeichen mit seim Wort,
auf welches zielen hie und dort
der Widersacher alle Pfeil,
so viel ihr hat die Welt und Hell.

5 Kein Theil steht mit dem andern wohl,
doch wenns dies Kindlein treffen soll,
so stimmt die Stadt Jerusalem
mit dem Herodes überein.

6 Maria groß Schmerzen empfindt,
ein scharfes Schwerd ihr Seel durchdringt;
die liebe Kirche wird betrübt,
der falschen Brüder Herzen sieht.

7 Hilf, lieber Gott, daß wir nicht falln,
sondern uns an das Kindlein haln;
las uns kein Widerspruch verkehrn,
erhalt uns dir zu Lob und Ehrn. Amen.

THOUGH Herod very craftily
Would fool by fair hypocrisy
The wise men who from eastward came,
God foiled him and put him to shame.

2 This vexed him sore, in wrath he burned,
Against the little babes he turned,
Supposing thus the Christ would die,
But no success he found thereby.

3 What chiefly Herod had in sight,
The infant Christ, had taken flight,
The rest he helps to blessedness,
But brings himself into distress.

4 For this so bloody tyrant-deed
Whose like in hist’ry none might read,
Was for the infants swiftly o’er,
And they are happy evermore.

5 But to a grievous punishment
The murderer is justly sent
That, daily wors’ning, lasts for aye.
God, keep us evermore, we pray!

Da Jesus an den Jordan kam

Here is my translation of the Baptism hymn, “Da Jesus an den Jordan kam” (Ludwig Helmbold, d. 1598), in ELGB #291, where it is given without author, dated “ca. 1650.” Fischer has no entry for it. It appears in the Marpurg Gsb 1684, no. 126, p. 245f., in the Baptism section, with melody “Christe der du bist Tag und Licht” indicated. Further search locates it in Helmbold’s Schöne Geistliche Lieder über alle Evangelia, no. XXXI (in the 1615 ed., p. 32f.), “concerning the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ” (on the Day of the Epiphany). Here the Christmas melody “Christum wir sollen loben schon” is appointed. Probably when it was later adopted not as an Epiphany hymn but generally as a Baptism hymn, the seasonal melody was replaced with the more general one (admittedly originally a season melody from Lent).

 

WHEN Jesus came to Jordan’s flood,
By John was baptized for our good,
As if He were with sin defiled;
There heav’n and earth were reconciled.

2 What wonder then occurred, behold:
The heavens were as veils unrolled,
The Spirit came down from above
In gracious form like as a dove.

3 On Christ the Lord did He alight,
A voice from heaven sounded bright:
“This is My Son, beloved and best,
On Him doth all My pleasure rest.”

4 ’Twas for our good, what happened here;
Not for Himself doth God appear,
He speaks, not that He may receive,
But that we may this truth believe:

5 That Man is God’s true Son, the Christ,
Who at the Jordan is baptized
Like sinners, and no sin hath known,
Yet for all sin atones alone.

6 Hereby He heaven’s barrier rends,
The Holy Ghost to us descends,
The Father to us all makes known
That we are pleasing in His Son.

7 When we our Baptism here receive,
He doth to us the sonship give:

Gott, heilger Schöpfer aller Stern

Here is my translation of the hymn “Gott, heilger Schöpfer aller Stern” (Thomas Müntzer, d. 1525), ELGB #4, a revision of the hymn “Conditor alme siderum” in seven stanzas first appearing in the author’s Deutsch Evangelisch Mesße (Altstedt, 1524) for Advent. Wackernagel remarks: “A direct indication anywhere that the hymn is by T. Müntzer is unknown to me.” Included in Zwickau Enchiridion 1526, Erfurt 1527, in Low German in the Magdeburg Gsb from 1534, etc. The melody indicated in the Buffalo hymnal is “Christum wir sollen loben schon.”

 

GOD, holy Maker of each star,
Enlighten us, who stand afar,
That we the true Christ may confess,
Born Man for us in righteousness.

2 For so it grieved Thee heartily
That we lay in captivity,
Condemned to die forevermore;
Thy back our guilt and sorrows bore.

3 When all the world to even pressed,
The Bridegroom Christ was manifest
Out of His mother’s chamber gained;
The Virgin chaste and pure remained.

4 His mighty pow’r He then unfurled,

Here is my translation of the Candlemas/Purification hymn, “Ach Jesu, der du uns zugut” as found in the Strassburg Hymnal (766 Psalmen…, etc.). It is sung to the tune “Christum wir sollen loben schon.”

O JESUS, who, to set us free,

Wast born in utter poverty,

Laid in a manger for a cot,

And of Thy riches given naught:

2. In forty days Thou didst not scorn

Into the temple to be borne,

Where godly Simeon did hail

And hold Thee to his bosom frail.

3. What he awaited glad and fain

By Thee that day he did obtain,

And with his heart his God adored,

That he should live to see his Lord.

4. Then Anna, widow great of age

By many known a seeress sage,

Who of God’s Word was not ashamed,

Approached, and wondrous things proclaimed.

5. O Christ, assist Thy flock on earth
