Was Lobes soll man dir, o Jesu, singen

Here is my translation of the hymn “Was Lobes soll man dir, o Jesu, singen” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Sunday after Epiphany. While proper melodies for the text were devised by König’s time (1730s), the melody assignment by Neumeister indicates a hymn from the earlier Boh. Brethren. hymnal, which was sung to a melody matching the Tenor line from the setting of the Pia Cantio Vitam quae faciunt (popularized with the text “Gaudete, Gaudete”):

WHAT praise, O Jesus, shall we ever sing Thee?
And what thank-off’ring for Thy graces bring Thee?

2 For were we e’en from heaven’s height descended,
Thou art far greater, higher, and more splendid.

3 And were our mouths like angels’ tongues before Thee,
They would yet fall far short of Thy due glory.

4 Mighty God, Thou becam’st a mortal lowly,
Wast made like us, yet free from sin and holy.

5 Thou art in truth of all mankind the Father,
And yet wast pleased to be a Child, our Brother.

6 Thou art so high t can be higher,
And yet to be made lowest didst desire.

7 The majesty whereof Thou could’st be partaking
Thou gladly didst forgo, Thy throne forsaking.

8 Thou art the Lord and Maker of creation,
And yet becamest poor, of lowly station.

9 All that exists is by Thy Law corrected,
And yet wast Thou found to the Law subjected.

10 Thus didst Thou, who Thyself art adoration,
Obedient bear cross, death, and degradation.

11 All this therefore Thou took’st on Thee, dear Savior,
To bring us all to heav’nly grace and favor.

12 Yea, therefore wast Thou here on earth abasèd,
That we might yonder high in heav’n by raisèd.

13 O faithfulness! O marks of love unerring,
Who can adore Thee, Jesus, as deserving?

14 Grant us by Thy example to endeavor
To walk before Thee humble-hearted ever.

15 Let us stand bold in faith, with captive reason,
Till Thou exalt us in due time and season.

16 Then shalt thou have for all Thy grace and favor
All honor, glory, praise, and laud forever.

so bist du doch viel höher noch zu ehren.

3 Sollt unser Mund auch Engelzungen gleichen,
noch wird er nicht zu deinem Preise reichen.

4 Du, großer Gott, tratst in der Menschen Orden,
und bist uns gleich, doch ohne Sünde, worden.

5 Du bist fürwahr der Vater von uns allen:
und ließt dir doch, ein Kind zu sein, gefallen.

6 Du bist so hoch, daß nichts kann höher werden,
und hast  dich selbst erniedriget auf Erden.

7 Der Herrlichkeit, darin du konntest leben,

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Das Kindlein Jesus ist gesetzt” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for the First Sunday after Christmas.

THE Infant Jesus Christ is set
And so abides, though often met
By many, who shall take offense
And fall in feeble diffidence.

2 Though lowly be His outward state,
He counts no mortal virtue great,
And thus offends works-righteous all,
Who, spurning Him, devise their fall.

3 But he who knows his sins offend,
And sees how, from the start to end,
His body_and soul are sore defiled—
He cleaveth to the dear Christ-child.

4 Christ with His Word stands for a sign,
At which the foe, with vision fine,
Shoots all his arrows swift and fell
From many_a bow in earth and hell.

5 Earth’s factions find no common ground,
But when this Babe is to be found,
Then Salem’s whole assembled horde
Leaps to the fray with one accord.

6 And Mary feels great sorrows too,
A sword her soul doth pierce clean through,
The Holy Church afflicted grieves
As she false brothers’ hearts perceives.

7 Oh, help us that we may not fall,
But firmly hold the Christ-child small!
Let no objection turn us, God;
Preserve us to Thy praise and laud.

daran sich viel ärgern und falln,
viel sich in Schwachheit an es haln.

2 Sein äußerlich Gestalt ist klein,
läßt doch nichts groß an andern sein:
das verdreußt die Werkheilgen all,
verachten es mit großem Fall.

3 Aber wer seine Sünd erkennt,
und sicht von Anfang bis zum End,
wie Leib und Seel verderbet sein,
der hält sich an das Jesulein.

4 Das steht zum Zeichen mit seim Wort,
auf welches zielen hie und dort
der Widersacher alle Pfeil,
so viel ihr hat die Welt und Hell.

5 Kein Theil steht mit dem andern wohl,
doch wenns dies Kindlein treffen soll,
so stimmt die Stadt Jerusalem

Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for the Sunday after Christmas (Sunday in the Octave of Christmas), which this year is superseded by the feast of the Holy Innocents so I give it on the Sunday after, which would otherwise be the Octave of Holy Innocents. Gesius 1605 appoints the

WHEN Mary’s purifying days
Accomplished were, as custom says
And Moses’ law, they followed them
And went up to Jerusalem.

2 Presenting Jesus to the Lord,
They kept the Law and written word.
Then entered agèd Simeon
And prophesied of Mary’s Son.

3 This Jesus, lo, thy child so small
Will make full many, offended, fall
And speak against this sign; likewise,
He will make many in faith arise.

4 A sword shall pierce through thy heart too,
And thou wilt see with sorrow true
How then the thoughts (remember me)
Of many hearts revealed shall be.

5 A seeress, Anna, what is more,
A widow fourscore years and four,
Prayed in the Temple day and night—
She in young Jesus took delight.

6 The Lord’s Messiah here she saw,
And so rejoiced with hearty awe,
And made it known throughout the land,
How Christ, th’ Anointed, was at hand.

7 When they had everything fulfilled
Which Moses bade, as God had willed,
