Das Kindlein Jesus ist gesetzt

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Das Kindlein Jesus ist gesetzt” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for the First Sunday after Christmas.

Mel.: Christum wir sollen loben schon.

THE Infant Jesus Christ is set
And so abides, though often met
By many, who shall take offense
And fall in feeble diffidence.

2 Though lowly be His outward state,
He counts no mortal virtue great,
And thus offends works-righteous all,
Who, spurning Him, devise their fall.

3 But he who knows his sins offend,
And sees how, from the start to end,
His body_and soul are sore defiled—
He cleaveth to the dear Christ-child.

4 Christ with His Word stands for a sign,
At which the foe, with vision fine,
Shoots all his arrows swift and fell
From many_a bow in earth and hell.

5 Earth’s factions find no common ground,
But when this Babe is to be found,
Then Salem’s whole assembled horde
Leaps to the fray with one accord.

6 And Mary feels great sorrows too,
A sword her soul doth pierce clean through,
The Holy Church afflicted grieves
As she false brothers’ hearts perceives.

7 Oh, help us that we may not fall,
But firmly hold the Christ-child small!
Let no objection turn us, God;
Preserve us to Thy praise and laud.

doch wenns dies Kindlein treffen soll,
so stimmt die Stadt Jerusalem
mit dem Herodes überein.

6 Maria groß Schmerzen empfindt,
ein scharfes Schwerd ihr Seel durchdringt;
die liebe Kirche wird betrübt,
der falschen Brüder Herzen sieht.

7 Hilf, lieber Gott, daß wir nicht falln,
sondern uns an das Kindlein haln;
las uns kein Widerspruch verkehrn,
erhalt uns dir zu Lob und Ehrn. Amen.

Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for the Sunday after Christmas (Sunday in the Octave of Christmas), which this year is superseded by the feast of the Holy Innocents so I give it on the Sunday after, which would otherwise be the Octave of Holy Innocents. Gesius 1605 appoints the

Mel.: Christum wir sollen loben schon.

WHEN Mary’s purifying days
Accomplished were, as custom says
And Moses’ law, they followed them
And went up to Jerusalem.

2 Presenting Jesus to the Lord,
They kept the Law and written word.
Then entered agèd Simeon
And prophesied of Mary’s Son.

3 This Jesus, lo, thy child so small
Will make full many, offended, fall
And speak against this sign; likewise,
He will make many in faith arise.

4 A sword shall pierce through thy heart too,
And thou wilt see with sorrow true
How then the thoughts (remember me)
Of many hearts revealed shall be.

5 A seeress, Anna, what is more,
A widow fourscore years and four,
Prayed in the Temple day and night—
She in young Jesus took delight.

6 The Lord’s Messiah here she saw,
And so rejoiced with hearty awe,
And made it known throughout the land,
How Christ, th’ Anointed, was at hand.

7 When they had everything fulfilled
Which Moses bade, as God had willed,
As in the cov’nant old discerned,
They home to Galilee returned.

8 And so the little Christ-child grew,
Waxed strong in Spirit right and true,
And, filled with wisdom day by day,
God’s grace and hand upon Him lay.

*9 Lord Christ, help all men Thee receive,
Who now resist, nor will believe,
So may Thy reign grow far and wide,
And Thy dear name be glorified.

GERMAN
Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward,
daß sie sollt nach jüdischer Art
und Moses Gsetz sich reinigen,
da zog sie gen Jerusalem.

Und stallt Jesum den Herren dar,
wie im Gesetz geboten war,
da kam der alte SImeon
und weissagt von Marien Sohn

3 Dieser Jesus das Söhnelein,
ihr vielen wird ein Anstoß sein
und werden ihm fast widerstahn,
doch werden ihn viel nehmen an.

4 Ein Schwert durchschneiden wird dein Herz
und wirst erfahrn mit großem Schmerz
alsdann viel Herzen (denk{t} an mich)
werden selbs offenbaren sich.

5 Hanna ein Prophetinne war,
ein Wittfrau vier und achzig Jahr,
die bet im Tempel Tag und Nacht,
und gab aufs Kind Jesum gut Acht.

6 Erkannt, daß es Messias wär,
des freut sie sich von Herzen sehr,
und macht solchs jedermann bekannt,
sprach Messias wär vor der Hand.

7 Da sies nun alls hatten vollendt,
was in dem alten Testament

alle, so dir jetzt widerstahn,
daß dein Kirch und Reich werd gemehrt,
und dein Nam gepreist und geehrt.

O Anfang ohne Ende

 Here is my translation of the hymn for Sunday after Christmas, “O Anfang ohne Ende” (Benjamin Schmolck, d. 1737, alt., ? Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #20. Of the original Schmolck hymn “O Anfang sonder Ende,” which I translated already, stanzas 1–3, 5–6 are here reworked by reversal of lines 5 and 6, metrically, at least, and numerous textual changes in style and substance. Finally, a 6th stanza of unknown origin is added, evidently by the reworker, which again I take to be Paul Henkel. The appointed melody is “Befiehl du deine Wege.” Below I also include the version provided in the Church Hymn Book (1816) which bears only a slight resemblance to our hymn, though touching on some similar themes. Clearly it was developed from the German text and entirely recast for Long Meter.

BEGINNING with no ending!
Thou Lord of times and days!
Our hands to Thee extending
With joy Thy name we praise,
Life to us Thou hast given
Till one more year was o’er:
Be glorified in heaven
Now and forevermore!

2 The Church is wondrous truly:
Thy Word and Sacrament
Refresh our spirit wholly,
With Light and Right unblent.
Christ, to His Passion driven,
In shameful form was seen,
But we are heirs of heaven
Because He rose again.

3 The land with blessing teemeth,
And with Thy bounty shines,
Thus everywhere it seemeth
Is comfort for our minds.
Are we oft pierced with sadness
And grief, as by a sword,
We see a brighter morrow,
Redeemed by Christ our Lord.

4 (5) O grace unhoped, undoubted!
Though we deserve but wrath,
Thou hast all danger routed
At Christ’s atoning death;
Will we with pray’r and fasting
Approach the Mercy-seat
In faith unfeigned, unresting,
The ending shall be sweet.

5 (6) Ah, should we not be voicing
Our thanks in this bright hour,
With all our heart rejoicing,
And praise Thy wondrous pow’r?
As in that sacred story
Good Anna held Thee dear
And praised God for His glory
With lips and godly fear?

6 Let us in peace be going
As Simeon of old,
When years are past, well knowing
The gracious prize we’ll hold.
Then will we see impending
Surcease of every woe,
When to Thy joy unending
Thou, Lord, shalt bid us go.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
O Thou from all eternity!
Who didst descend to come and be
An infant brought before the Lord,
As was directed in his word.

2 Thy presence caused Thy saints rejoice:
They with thanksgiving raised their voice,
To see the Lord whom they had sought
Into the Holy Temple brought.

3 That which is to the world unknown
To every seeking soul is shown;
They who do humbly seek their God,
Shall have such grace on them bestowed.

4 God's counsels they are truly great,
Yet such as humbly on him wait;
To such the Lord will still unfold,
As unto Simeon of old.

5 Their Lord and Savior they shall find:
They see him with the eye of mind;
Their hearts with faith and hopes are filled,
Thus is their Lord to them revealed.

6 But sorrow mingle with their joys,
And otherwise their mind employs:
As was the Virgin Mary's case,
Tho' she embraced the king of peace.

7 Her darling son, was Christ indeed,
Who came to crush the Serpent's head,
But O, the tooth that pierced his heel!
What sorrows it caused her to feel.

8 As Simeon there had prophesied,
Her dearest son was crucified;
The sight thereof it was a dart,
A sword that pierced her tender heart.

9 Thus we rejoice and mourn again,
Our joys and hopes are oft-times slain;
But still our faith and hope increase,
Till we depart this world in peace.

GERMAN
O Anfang ohne Ende,
du großes A und O!
wir recken dir die Hände,
und sind von Herzen froh:
du hst uns lassen leben,
und enden noch ein Jahr.
Dir sei die Ehre geben,
jetzund und immerdar.

2 Die Kirche ist voll Wunder,
dein Wort und Sakrament
macht unsre Seele munter,
daß Licht und Recht noch brennt
ward Jesus durch sein Sterben,
verachtet angesehn,
doch sind wir Himmels-Erben,
weil er thät auferstehn.

3 Das Land ist voller Segen,
erleucht mit deiner Guth,
drum findt man allerwegen,
den Trost für das Gemüth.
Und thut uns oft durchdringen,
Trübsal und Seelenpein;
so muß uns doch gelingen,
weil wir erlöset sein.

4 O welche große Gnade!
ob wir gleich Zorn verdient,
doch hast du allen Schaden
durch Christum ausgesöhnt.
Wann wir mit Fasten, Beten,
im Glauben Tag und Nacht,
zum Gnadenthron hintreten,
so wird es gut gemacht.

5 Ach sollten wir jetzunder
nicht höchstens dankbar sein,
und über deine Wunder,
uns recht von Herzen freun,
wie dort in jener Stunde
die fromme Hannah that,
lobt Gott von Herzensgrunde,
und preiste seinen Rath.

6 Laß uns in Frieden fahren,
wie dort den Simeon,
nach überlbten Jahren,
empfahn den Gnadenlohn;
so werden wir dann sehen
ein End von allem Leid,
wann du uns heißest gehen
hin in die Ewig Freud.

O Anfang sonder Ende

Here is my translation of the End of the Year / New Year hymn, “O Anfang sonder Ende” (Benjamin Schmolck, d. 1737), Ev.-luth. Gsb #478, a revised form adapted to emphasize the theme “Ending of the Year” with omission of stanza 6. Fischer has no entry for the hymn. I find it in Gottschald (1737) with 9 stanzas under the Church Year section (largely Schmolck hymns based on the epistles and Gospels), #308, p. 217f., titled: “The Gospel after Christmas, Luke 2:33–40” (to which the original form makes clearer reference) and melody: “Helft mir Gotts Güte preisen.” In the Wisc. hymnal, the appointed melody is “Aus meines Herzens Grunde.”

BEGINNING without ending!
Thou Lord of times and days!
Thy diligent attending
For this year past we praise,
Which now is almost o’er,
And come, Thy works confessing,
Thy wonders and Thy blessing,
We give Thee thanks therefore.

2 The Church is grounded truly
In Word and Sacrament;
Thy Light and Right e’er newly
Were kindled in Thy tent;
Thy Son, the Cornerstone,
On which the foes are falling,
Shall some day forth be calling
All those who are His own.

3 The land with blessing teemeth,
It drips with oil and wine,
The fruit of acres gleameth
By blessings all divine.
If here and there some sword
Has pierced our soul with sorrow
Thou dost a happy morrow
And comfort still afford.

4 Rich stores the house are filling
And every morning new,
Where labor has been willing,
And cares were suffered too.
The children have increased,
And grown up strong in spirit,
And trusted in Christ’s merit,
Nor in His learning ceased.

5 Our hearts are full of gladness,
Though we deserve but wrath,
Yet fled are sin and sadness
At Christ’s atoning death;
When we by day or night
Came fasting and applying,
To Thy good grace with sighing,
Thou madest all things right.

[6 Ah should we not with shouting
Rejoice in this bright hour,
With all our heart, not doubting,
And praise Thy wondrous pow’r?
Oh, should we not draw near
Like Anna, to Thee giving
Our praises while we’re living,
With lips and godly fear?]

7 Now, Lord, Thine is the glory,
Who Wonderful art called;
Then let us, we implore Thee,
By no more grief appalled
The year to closure set;
And so, Thy grace bestowing,
Grant us well to be knowing,
The old God liveth yet!

8 Let old ones serve like Anna
And faithful Simeon,
Let young ones sing Hosanna
And grow in David’s Son;
As all in years increase,
Let spirits too be growing,
More goodness ever showing:
This work, Lord, never cease!

9 And when we have attended
To what Thy Scripture says,
And here our course is ended,
Though young or full of days,
Then lead us with great cheer [Then take us to the gates
To join Th’ assembly yonder, [Of Nazareth supernal]
And praise Thy works of wonder [To praise Thy works supernal:]
In peace’s endless year. [For this doth Isr’el wait.]

O Anfang sonder Ende,
du großer Herr der Zeit, […großes A und O]
wir preisen deiner Hände [wir küssen deine H.]
Regierung hocherfreut, [und sind von Herzen froh]
weil du uns noch ein Jahr
mit Segen lässest schließen […läßt beschließen]
und wir bekennen müssen, [daß…]
dein Thun sei wunderbar.

man schmecket allerwegen [man siehet…]
der Felder edle Kost. [wie seine Frucht geräth.]
Ist da und dort ein Schwert
durch unsre Seele gangen,
da hast du nach Verlangen
auch wieder Trost bescheert.

4 Die Häuser sind voll Güte,
die alle Morgen neu;
wo man sich treulich mühte,
da stund dein Sorgen bei. [da trat…]
Die Kinder wuchsen auf,
und wurden stark am Geiste,
weil Gottes Kind sie weiste
auf seiner Jugend Lauf.

5 Die Herzen sind voll Gnaden,
obgleich wir Zorn verdient,
doch hast du allen Schaden
durch Christum ausgesühnt;
wenn wir bei Tag und Nacht
mit Seufzen und mit Beten [mit Fasten…]
vor deinen Thron getreten,
hast du es gut gemacht.

*6 Ach! sollten wir jetzunder
nicht voller Jauchzen sein,
und über deine Wunder
uns recht von Herzen freun?
Ach! sollten wir denn nicht
wie Hanna, diese Stunde
mit dem erfreuten Munde
zum Lobe sein gericht?

7 Nun, Herr, dein ist die Ehre,
du heißest Wunderbar,
drum unser Flehen höre,
daß wir das alte Jahr,
befreit von aller Noth,
in deiner Gnade schließen
und indem neuen wissen,
du seist der alte Gott.

8 Laß dir die Alten dienen
wie Hanna, Simeon;
gieb daß die Jungen grünen
wie dein und Davids Sohn.
Nimmt eins an Jahren zu, [Nimmt man…]
das soll sich auch nicht schämen,
im Guten zuzunehmen;
dies Alles wirke du!

9 Und wenn wir das vollendet,
was uns dein Wort gesagt,
[drauf wartet Israel]
