Da Maria im Kindelbett

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Da Maria im Kindelbett” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for Presentation and Purification. Gesius 1605 appoints the

Mel.: Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her.

WHEN Mary in her childbed lay
Six weeks, upon th’ appointed day,
She to God’s Word obedient went,
Her little Infant to present.

2 She would comply with God’s command
Writ down of old by Moses’ hand:
Each firstborn male must solemnly
Unto Jehovah hallow’d be.

3 Two turtledoves she duly brought
Her off’ring for the altar wrought,
And so redeemed her little Son,
Who all mankind’s redemption won.

4 In Salem Simëon abode,
A pious man who feared his God,
And waited for Messiah’s day,
Continuing in pray’r alway.

5 To him an answer once did give
The Holy Ghost, that He would live
To see the true Messiah’s birth,
And look upon Him on this earth.

6 Now when the parents of the same
Child Jesus in the Temple came,
To do their fitting, lawful part,
The Holy Ghost stirred in his heart.

7 That hour he to the temple sped,
And joy and comfort through him spread,
The Savior of the world he faced,
On whom His comfort all was placed.

8 When he the Infant came to see,
He hasted to Him joyfully,
And in His arms embraced the Boy,
In whom He saw his deepest joy.

9 He held Him, gave Him many a kiss,
His spirit soared with joy and bliss;
He said, Lord, now Thou lett’st me die,
For now my Savior seen have I.

10 Let me in peace depart to rest,
I have been granted my request,
Mine eyes have seen Him born to save,
Who will not leave me in the grave.

11 To be the whole world’s Savior He
Was graciously prepared by Thee,
And as a shining light was brought
For Gentiles lands that know Thee not.

Da Maria im Kindelbett
ihr sechs Wochen gehalten hett,
wollt sie Gotts Wort gehorsam sein,
stallt dem Herren ihr Söhnelein.

2 Daß sie dem Gsetz ein Gnügen thet,
wie im Mose geschrieben steht,
all erst geborne Männelein

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Das Kindlein Jesus ist gesetzt” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for the First Sunday after Christmas.

Mel.: Christum wir sollen loben schon.

THE Infant Jesus Christ is set
And so abides, though often met
By many, who shall take offense
And fall in feeble diffidence.

2 Though lowly be His outward state,
He counts no mortal virtue great,
And thus offends works-righteous all,
Who, spurning Him, devise their fall.

3 But he who knows his sins offend,
And sees how, from the start to end,
His body_and soul are sore defiled—
He cleaveth to the dear Christ-child.

4 Christ with His Word stands for a sign,
At which the foe, with vision fine,
Shoots all his arrows swift and fell
From many_a bow in earth and hell.

5 Earth’s factions find no common ground,
But when this Babe is to be found,
Then Salem’s whole assembled horde
Leaps to the fray with one accord.

6 And Mary feels great sorrows too,
A sword her soul doth pierce clean through,
The Holy Church afflicted grieves
As she false brothers’ hearts perceives.

7 Oh, help us that we may not fall,
But firmly hold the Christ-child small!
Let no objection turn us, God;
Preserve us to Thy praise and laud.

doch wenns dies Kindlein treffen soll,
so stimmt die Stadt Jerusalem
mit dem Herodes überein.

6 Maria groß Schmerzen empfindt,
ein scharfes Schwerd ihr Seel durchdringt;
die liebe Kirche wird betrübt,
der falschen Brüder Herzen sieht.

7 Hilf, lieber Gott, daß wir nicht falln,
sondern uns an das Kindlein haln;
las uns kein Widerspruch verkehrn,
erhalt uns dir zu Lob und Ehrn. Amen.

Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for the Sunday after Christmas (Sunday in the Octave of Christmas), which this year is superseded by the feast of the Holy Innocents so I give it on the Sunday after, which would otherwise be the Octave of Holy Innocents. Gesius 1605 appoints the

Mel.: Christum wir sollen loben schon.

WHEN Mary’s purifying days
Accomplished were, as custom says
And Moses’ law, they followed them
And went up to Jerusalem.

2 Presenting Jesus to the Lord,
They kept the Law and written word.
Then entered agèd Simeon
And prophesied of Mary’s Son.

3 This Jesus, lo, thy child so small
Will make full many, offended, fall
And speak against this sign; likewise,
He will make many in faith arise.

4 A sword shall pierce through thy heart too,
And thou wilt see with sorrow true
How then the thoughts (remember me)
Of many hearts revealed shall be.

5 A seeress, Anna, what is more,
A widow fourscore years and four,
Prayed in the Temple day and night—
She in young Jesus took delight.

6 The Lord’s Messiah here she saw,
And so rejoiced with hearty awe,
And made it known throughout the land,
How Christ, th’ Anointed, was at hand.

7 When they had everything fulfilled
Which Moses bade, as God had willed,
As in the cov’nant old discerned,
They home to Galilee returned.

8 And so the little Christ-child grew,
Waxed strong in Spirit right and true,
And, filled with wisdom day by day,
God’s grace and hand upon Him lay.

*9 Lord Christ, help all men Thee receive,
Who now resist, nor will believe,
So may Thy reign grow far and wide,
And Thy dear name be glorified.

Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward,
daß sie sollt nach jüdischer Art
und Moses Gsetz sich reinigen,
da zog sie gen Jerusalem.

Und stallt Jesum den Herren dar,
wie im Gesetz geboten war,
da kam der alte SImeon
und weissagt von Marien Sohn

3 Dieser Jesus das Söhnelein,
ihr vielen wird ein Anstoß sein
und werden ihm fast widerstahn,
doch werden ihn viel nehmen an.

4 Ein Schwert durchschneiden wird dein Herz
und wirst erfahrn mit großem Schmerz
alsdann viel Herzen (denk{t} an mich)
werden selbs offenbaren sich.

5 Hanna ein Prophetinne war,
ein Wittfrau vier und achzig Jahr,
die bet im Tempel Tag und Nacht,
und gab aufs Kind Jesum gut Acht.

6 Erkannt, daß es Messias wär,
des freut sie sich von Herzen sehr,
und macht solchs jedermann bekannt,
sprach Messias wär vor der Hand.

7 Da sies nun alls hatten vollendt,
was in dem alten Testament

alle, so dir jetzt widerstahn,
daß dein Kirch und Reich werd gemehrt,
und dein Nam gepreist und geehrt.

Nun laß, Herr, dein Diener fahren

 Canticle LXXXI. Simeon’s Song, Luke 2.

Mel.: Nun laßt uns den Leib begraben.

NOW, Lord, Thy servant let depart
In peace! Preserve my mind and heart,
As pledged me by Thy Holy Word,
The soul’s relief and hope assured.

2 For Jesus Christ mine eyes have seen,
The Savior of the world from sin,
Prepared by Thee in loving grace
For every people, tribe, and race.

3 That as a Light He light might shine
On Gentiles, who in darkness pine,
And be Thy people’s glory aye,
To help and save in many a way.

Text: C. Spangenberg, 1582.

Herr Gott, nun schleuß den Himmel auf”

 Here is my translation of the Purification / Dying hymn, “Herr Gott, nun schleuß den Himmel auf” (Tobias Kiel, d. 1627), ELGB #79, first appearing with setting for 5 voices by Michael Altenburg in his Christlicher, lieblicher und andechtiger, newer Kirchen und Hauß Gesänge (Erfurt, 1620), later in the Gotha Cantional 1646 (1651). Bach incorporates it into BWV 1092 and BWV 617. Since the translation by Catherine Winkworth does not quite follow the meter, but also omits some internal rhyme, I have undertaken a completely new translation. Several settings with melodies and variants often based on Altenburg’s exist. I include here a 4-part setting by Zahn.

LORD God, let heaven open wide,
My little day soon closes;
My course is run, I’m satisfied,
My soul in joy reposes;
Grief was I given,
And much have striven;
Now softly send
Rest without end!
Let earthly things be taken,
To bliss let me awaken!

2 Lord, as Thou hast commanded me,
I have embraced My Savior
In arms of faith, and look to Thee,
Who art my Hope forever.
I’ll stand securely;
To gladness surely
I soon shall go
From tears and woe.
Let earthly things be taken,
To bliss let me awaken!

3 Lord, let me go like Simeon
To Thee in peace and favor;
Commit my soul to Christ Thy Son,
Who will preserve me ever,
And guide me rightly
And crown me brightly
With glory’s ray;
I go my way!
Let earthly things be taken,
To bliss let me awaken!

WINKWORTH 1868
Lord God, now open wide Thy heaven,
My parting hour is near;
My course is run, enough I've striven
Enough I've suffered here;
Weary and sad
My soul is glad
That she may lay her down to rest;
Now all on earth I can resign,
But only let Thy heaven be mine.

2 As Thou, Lord, hast commanded me,
Have I with perfect faith
Embraced my Saviour, and to Thee
I calmly look in death;
With willing heart
I hence depart,
I hope to stand before Thy face:
Yes, all on earth I can resign,
If but Thy heaven at last be mine.

3 Then let me go like Simeon
In peace with Thee to dwell,
For I commend me to Thy Son,
And He will guard me well,
And guide me straight
To the golden gate;
And in this hope I calmly die;
Yes, all on earth I can resign,
If but Thy heaven may now be mine.

Herr Gott! nun schleuß den Himmel auf,
mein Zeit zum End sich neiget;
ich hab vollendet meinen Lauf,
des sich mein Seel sehr freuet,
hab gnug gelitten,
Las fahren, was auf Erden,
will lieber selig werden.

2 Wie Dir mir Herr befohlen hast,
hab ich mit wahrem Glauben,
mein lieben Heiland aufgefaßt
in mein Arm, Dich zu schauen.
Hoff zu bestehen, will frisch eingehen
ausm Thränenthal
in Freudensaal.
Laß fahren, was auf Erden,
will lieber selig werden.

3 Laß mich nur Herr, wie Simeon
in Frieden zu Dir fahren,
befehl mich Christo Deinem Sohn,
der wird mich wohl bewahren,
wird mich recht führen
im Himmel zieren
mit Ehr und Cron,
fahr drauf davon.
Laß fahren, was auf Erden,
will lieber selig werden.

Herr Jesu Christe, Gottes Sohn, ich red mit dir

Here is my translation of “Herr Jesu Christe, Gottes Sohn, ich red mit dir” (17th c.), a prayer hymn for the feast of the Purification, based on the song of Simeon, and attributed to Sigismund von Birken in most hymnals. In the earliest instance I could discover, the Lüneburgisches Gesangbuch (1694) it is attributed to Anonymous. The appointed melody is “Ich hab mein Sach Gott heimgestellt.”

LORD Jesus Christ, God’s only Son,
I speak to Thee like Simeon:
How long my faith has longed to see
The sight of Thee,
And to embrace Thy majesty!

2. For lo, I have these many years
Passed by in idle toils and tears,
Now by my sins I am oppressed,
And have no rest,
Sin’s penalty weighs on my breast.

3 Each day Thou many dost unbind,
That in God’s bosom they may find
Sweet sleep that ne’er will end—
When wilt Thou send
Thy heavn’ly missive here to wend?

4 Thine angel then, not deathly throes,
Will take me from all present woes;
For when my limbs are in the earth,
Then I’ll go forth
To heav’n, and Him who gave me birth.

5 The servant and the worker joy
When evening shades at last draw nigh,
Since then their toilsome labors cease,
Worn hands find peace,
And weary bodies their release.

6 In heaven is my Fatherland.
Here I am of the pilgrim band;
My earthly sack, whilst here I roam
Weighs like a tome;
Oh! how my soul doth long for home!

7 Peace only in God’s tent is found;
Earth’s wicked climes with war abound;
O Lord, Thy servant’s death allot,
I am distraught
Too long by Satan’s ceaseless plot.

8 At last, O weary soul, set forth
From ailing flesh and stings of earth;
Thy staff and hood be Jesus’ blood
Through death’s dark wood:
Blest death will turn all things to good.

Herr Jesu Christe, Gottes Sohn!
ich red mit dir, wie Simeon:
mein Glaub schon lange sehnte sich
zu sehen dich,
dich zu umfangen festiglich.

2 Nun hab ich mich so manche Zeit
gezogen müd an Eitelkeit,
die Sünden-Last,

hier bin ich in dem Pilgerstand;
der Wanderbündel dieser Erd
mich hart beschwert.
Ach! meine Seel nach Haus begehrt.

7 Fried wohnet nur im HImmelszelt;
voll Krieg ist diese böse Welt.
Dank ab, o Jesu, deine Knecht;
mich hat geschwächt
nun lang genug das Feindgefect.

8 Fahr endlich ab, du müde Seel,
aus deines Leibes Marterhöhl!
Dein Wanderstab sei Christi Blut
und Pilgerhut,
der liebe Tod macht alles gut.

In fremd Herberg ich bin gewest

Here is my translation of the Purification hymn “In fremd Herberg ich bin gewest” (N. Selneccer), an interpolation of the Canticle of Simeon the Patriarch from Luke 2 (Nunc dimittis). Based on the meter and tune of “Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin,” it is not meant to replace Luther’s indispensible hymn so much as to offer another application of both text and tune.

FROM home estranged, in lodgings rude
My flesh abideth,
In prison bound—yet for my good
God provideth;
Ever in this cart I’ve roamed
Throughout my life so lowly.

2. Now, Lord my God, in grace and love
From bondage bring me
Unto my home, and so remove
Sins that sting me;
Loose me from the cart’s dull yoke,
To dwell in freedom ever.

3. I am Thy servant, this I know;
Free, Lord, now send me;
So by Thy gracious pledge and vow
Thou wilt tend me:
Thou hast given me Thy Son;
In Him I am delivered.

4. With seeing heart I have beheld
Him, my Salvation,
In whom Thou givest to the world
Demonstration
Of Thy gracious will toward all
By faith in Him confiding.

5. Him Thou hast set forth as a Light
All men to lighten—
The world entire in heathen night
All to brighten;
And as Israel’s joy and bliss!—
Through Him we have salvation.
