Here is my translation of the hymn, “Seid nicht sicher, seid nich verzagt” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for Invocavit, with title “Of the devilish temptation overcome by Christ.”
Mel.: Rex Christe factor omnium.
All ye on whom Christ’s name is laid;
The tempter, prowling, seeks our life,
Yet there is comfort in the strife.
2 As he sought that our Savior Christ
By belly’s cares should be enticed,
By Scripture shall men crush his head;
God’s Word shall feed us more than bread.
3 Soon from the temple’s height, by ruse,
He bids us God’s defense abuse;
Such Christ forbids: God must not be
Put to the test thus needlessly.
4 The fiend to Christ the world displays,
For gold in store would buy His praise;
Christ saith: Get thee behind Me, foe!
On God alone thy praise bestow.
5 Before this Word the devil flees;
At once His angels Jesus sees,
Which serve their Lord. His vict’ry thus
In midst of war brings peace to us.
6 For that for which Christ deigned to fight
Against the devil’s craft and might
Was for us mortals fought and won:
Praise be to God on heaven’s throne! Amen.

Seid nicht sicher, seid nicht verzagt,
all die ihr Christi Namen tragt:
denn der Versucher schleicht uns nach,
doch ist auch Trost wider sein Macht.
2 Wie er versuchet unsern Herrn,
und will durch Bauchsorg ihn verführn,
wird er aus der Schrift abgeweist:
Gottes Wort mehr denn Brot uns speist.
3 Bald von des Tempels Zinnen weit,
heißt er freveln auf Gotts Geleit:
Christus verlegts ihm: ohne Noth
kein Mensch je soll versuchen Gott.
4 Der Bösewicht weist ihm die Welt,
will angebet sein um groß Geld,
Christus spricht: Heb dich Satan weg,
Gott muß allein sein angebet.
5 Vor diesem Wort der Teufel fleugt,
bald sich der Engel Schaar erzeigt,
dienet dem Herrn, durch seinen Sieg
haben wir Fried mitten im Krieg.
6 Denn was Christus erstritten hat
wider des Teufels Macht und Rath,
