Here is my translation of the hymn, “Da Maria im Kindelbett” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for Presentation and Purification. Gesius 1605 appoints the

Mel.: Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her.

 
WHEN Mary in her childbed lay
Six weeks, upon th’ appointed day,
She to God’s Word obedient went,
Her little Infant to present.

2 She would comply with God’s command
Writ down of old by Moses’ hand:
Each firstborn male must solemnly
Unto Jehovah hallow’d be.

3 Two turtledoves she duly brought
Her off’ring for the altar wrought,
And so redeemed her little Son,
Who all mankind’s redemption won.

4 In Salem Simëon abode,
A pious man who feared his God,
And waited for Messiah’s day,
Continuing in pray’r alway.

5 To him an answer once did give
The Holy Ghost, that He would live
To see the true Messiah’s birth,
And look upon Him on this earth.

6 Now when the parents of the same
Child Jesus in the Temple came,
To do their fitting, lawful part,
The Holy Ghost stirred in his heart.

7 That hour he to the temple sped,
And joy and comfort through him spread,
The Savior of the world he faced,
On whom His comfort all was placed.

8 When he the Infant came to see,
He hasted to Him joyfully,
And in His arms embraced the Boy,
In whom He saw his deepest joy.

9 He held Him, gave Him many a kiss,
His spirit soared with joy and bliss;
He said, Lord, now Thou lett’st me die,
For now my Savior seen have I.

10 Let me in peace depart to rest,
I have been granted my request,
Mine eyes have seen Him born to save,
Who will not leave me in the grave.

11 To be the whole world’s Savior He
Was graciously prepared by Thee,
And as a shining light was brought
For Gentiles lands that know Thee not.

Da Maria im Kindelbett
ihr sechs Wochen gehalten hett,
wollt sie Gotts Wort gehorsam sein,
stallt dem Herren ihr Söhnelein.

2 Daß sie dem Gsetz ein Gnügen thet,
wie im Mose geschrieben steht,
all erst geborne Männelein
sollen dem Herr geheiligt sein.

3 Zwei Turteltäublein bracht sie dar,
und opfert sie auf dem Altar,
damit löst sie ihr Söhnelein,
das alle Welt erlöst allein.

4 Zu Jerusalem was ein Mann
gottfürchtig, fromm, hieß Simeon,
der auf Messia hoffet stet,
und hielt fest an seinem Gebet.

5 Einsmals wurd ihm ein Antwort gebn
vom heilgen Geist, er sollts erlebn,
daß Christus würd geboren werdn,
er sollt ihn sehn auf dieser Erdn.

6 Als nun die Eltern mit dem Kind
Jesu, in Tempel kommen sind,
daß sie thetn was sich gebührt,
der heilig Geist sein Herz ihm rührt.

7 Das er von Stund in Tempel ging,
und sein Herzfreud und -Trost empfing,
und schaut den Heiland aller Welt,
auf den er hat sein Trost gestellt.

8 Da er des Kindleins wurd gewahr,
eilt er für Freuden zu ihm dar,
nahms auf sein Arm, druckts an sein Brust,
sah dran seins Herzensfreud und -Lust.

9 Er hertzts und küßts ohn Unterlaß,
sein Geist voll Wonn und Freuden was,
und sprach: Herr, nun laß sterben mich,
mein Heiland hab gesehen ich.

10 Laß mich in Fried nun fahrn von hin,
meiner bitt ich gewähret bin,
mit mein Augen gsehen ich hab,
der mich nit lassen wird im Grab.

11 Zu eim Heiland der ganzen Welt,
aus Gnad, hast du ihn fürgestellt,
und daß er sei das helle Licht
der Heiden, so dich kennen nicht.
