Mein Herze, mach dich auf

Here is my translation of the Baptismal life hymn “Mein Herze, mach dich auf” (L. Laurentii, 1700), appointed in Evangelia Melodica for the Feast of the Holy Trinity (first hymn).

Mel.: O Gott, du frommer Gott.

ARISE, my heart, and come!
Let not the time be wasted.
Like Nicodemus be,
Who to thy Jesus hasted.
Thou shalt a thing profound
Be shown by Jesus’ word:
Then come and listen well,
By God’s own Spirit stirred!

2 Know that in Adam thou
Art wholly devastated;
Thou must be from above
New-born and new-created;
Thy sinful birth doth thee
From heaven’s kingdom take,
But this new birth divine
Doth thee like heaven make.

3 Except a man be born
Of water and the Spirit,
He cannot heaven see
Nor blessedness inherit.
So doth our Jesus swear
By solemn oath and high,
Whose twofold “verily”
Can verily not lie.

4 What can this birth then be
Which Jesus here asserteth?
It is the washing in
The Word, that thee converteth,
Where that true righteousness
Procured by Jesus Christ
Is for salvation giv’n,
When thee He hath baptized.

5 Since thou wast born anew
By water and the Spirit,
To Baptism e’er be true
In th’ order of God’s merit,
And show that Thou no more
Dost in sin’s nature stand,
But art a creature new
By God’s almighty hand.

6 The teacher true is He
From God on high descending;
Hear Him! He seeks alone
Thy rescue and amending.
Think’st thou by flesh and blood
To join the wedding feast?
Thou shalt be shut outside
Like any unclean beast.

7 To heaven none go in
But only new creations,
Who follow Jesus Christ
And bear the cross with patience.
The world and all its ways
Must be in heart denied
For by them is thy God
Not pleased or satisfied.

8 Th’ old Adam must with all
His evil lusts be dying,
Or else the soul must be
To endless suff’ring flying.
Thou first to sin must die,
If thou to life wilt rise—
Which life thou hast obtained
For Baptism life supplies.

9 Yet must thou in the pow’r
Of Baptism still continue,
And soar with heart and mind
By faith, which God works in you.
Above in heaven must
Thy walk and conduct be
In faith; then art thou born
Of Spirit certainly.

10 Thy Jesus must alone
Make in thy heart His dwelling,
And God the Holy Ghost,
Supporting and impelling,
Make thee in faith to fight,
And steadfast to abide
And faithfully till death
In Jesus to confide.

11 Christ, by Thy Spirit grant
Us all regeneration,
And purge away all dross
And sin’s contamination,
Which to the gold of faith
Still cleaveth inwardly,
That so it may possess
The highest worth to Thee.

12 O Jesus, carry on
And cleanse without restraining,
That faith and love may be
Within our heart remaining—
Yea, Thou, Thy Father, and
Thy Spirit also rest,
So that Thy holy name
May be forever blest.

Mein Herze, mach dich auf,
noch ist es Zeit zu kommen,
die Nicodemus that, {wie…}
den Jesus angenommen.
Es ist ein hohe Sach,
die Jesus vor dir trägt,
drum komm, und höre zu
von Gottes Geist erregt.

2 Bedenke, daß du bist
in Adam ganz verloren,
und daß du werden mußt
von oben her geboren,
die sündliche Geburt
schließt aus vom Himmelreich,
die göttliche Geburt
macht dich dem Himmel gleich.

3 Es sei denn, spricht der Herr,
daß jemand wird geboren
aus Wasser und dem Geist,
so wird er nicht erkoren
zum Himmel, denn der Eid,
den Jesus hier ausspricht,
der wahrlich, wahrlich heißt,
wird wahrlich lügen nicht.

4 Was ist denn die Geburt,
die Jesus dich hier lehret?
Sie ist das Wasserbad
im Wort, das dich bekehret.
Da die Gerechtigkeit,
die Jesus dir erkauft,
geschenket worden ist
zum Heil, wie du getauft.

5 Sie hat dich neu geborn,
wie du getaufet worden,
aus wasser und dem Geist,
so bleib in Gottes Orden,
und zeige, daß du stehst
nicht mehr in der Natur
der Sünden, sondern seist
ein neue Kreatur.

6 Hier ist der Lehrer selbst,
der von Gott ist gekommen,
den höre, weil er nichts
sucht als dein Heil und Frommen.
Denkst du mit Fleisch und Blut
zum Himmel einzugehn,
so wirst du als ein Thier
noch draußen müssen stehen.

7 Es kommt im Himmel nichts
als neue Kreaturen,
die Jesu folgen nach
und seines Kreuzesspuren.
Es muß verleugnet sein
das Wesen dieser Welt
im Herzen, weil es Gott
wahrhaftig nicht gefällt.

8 Der alte Adam muß
mit allen Lüsten sterben,
wenn nicht die Seele soll
in Ewigkeit verderben.
Du mußt zum Tod erst gehn,
wenn du willt leben auf.
Diß Leben hast du schon
erlanget in der Tauf!

9 Doch mußt du in der Kraft
der Taufe ferner dringen,
und dich mit Seel und Geist
gar in den Himmel schwingen.
Es muß im Himmel sein
dein Wandel allermeist,
im Glauben, so bist du
geboren aus dem Geist.

10 Dein Jesus muß allein
in deinem Herzen leben,
und dich ohn Unterlaß
der Heilge Geist erheben
zum Glaubens-Kampf und Streit,
daß du beständig bleibst,
und bis im Tod getreu
an deinem Jesu gläubst.

11 O Jesu, laß dein Geist
uns alle neu gebähren,
und in der Läuterung
die Schlacken all abzehren,
die noch dem Glaubensgold
anhangen innerlich,
damit es halten mag
für dir den rechten Strich.

12 O Jesu, fahre fort,
und läutre sonder Schonen,
daß Glaub und Liebe mög
in unsern Herzen wohnen,
ja du, o Jesu, selbst
samt Vater und dem Geist,
damit dein Name werd
in Ewigkeit gepreist.
