Mein Geist, laß irdisch Wesen stehen

Here is my translation of the Trinity hymn, “Mein Geist, laß irdisch Wesen stehen” (E. Neumeister, 1705) which forms a counterpart to the hymn “Gott Vater, deine Liebesflammen” found, i.a., in the Ev. Luth. Gsb (1872), which is a generalized reworking of the present hymn, with the three stanzas to the persons of the Trinity being mostly identical. Accordingly, I base the last three stanzas on my translation of that other Trinity hymn translated in 2023 as “O Father! Flames of Thy Affection” with slight alterations.

Mel.: Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.

MY mind, no more earth’s trifles knowing
Keep thou a feast more highly prized:
Come, let us, to the Jordan going,
See how my Jesus is baptized.
See in one moment doth appear
Our Holy Triune God most dear.

2 Here opened I behold the heaven,
And glimpse therein on earth before
What I shall as an heir be given,
To have and hold forevermore.
Of this my portion now I boast:
God Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

3 O God the Father, I inherit,
As Thy dear child, Thy mercy free;
Thy Word reveals to me Thy spirit,
How tenderly Thou lovest me:
Thus faith with blessing finds its Stay:
Thou art my portion, Lord, for aye.

4 O God the Son, who for me dying,
Dost live and reign on high for me;
My life obtaining and supplying,
Thou lovest me, and I love Thee;
Thus love so fervent finds its Stay:
Thou art my portion, Lord, for aye.

5 O God the Spirit! Consolation,
Light, life, and all the soul delights
Thou givest me, Thy dear creation,
And leadest me to blessed heights.
Thus hope with gladness finds its Stay:
Thou art my portion, Lord, for aye.

Mein Geist, laß irdisch Wesen stehen,
und halt ein besser Freudenfest.
Wir wollen den Jordan gehen,
wo sich mein Jesus täufen läßt
Denn da erscheint zu einer Zeit
die heilige Dreieinigkeit.

2 Ich sehe hier den Himmel offen,
und blicke schon im Voraus an,
was ich da für ein Erbe hoffen,
und ewiglich besitzen kann.
Ich sage so: mein Erbguth heißt
Gott Vater, Sohn und Heilger Geist.

3 Gott Vater, deine große Güte
umfäht mich, als dein liebes Kind.
Dein Wort entdeckt mir deine Gemüthe,
wie treu du gegen mich gesinnt.
So trifft der Glaube selig ein:
Du wirst mein ewig Erbguth sein.

4 Gott Sohn, du bist um mich gestorben,
du lebst und herrschest auch um mich.
Mir, mir hast du das Heil erworben.
Du liebest mich, ich liebe dich.
So trifft die Liebe brünstig ein:
Du wirst mein ewig ERbguth sein.

5 Gott Heilger Geist, Licht, Trost, und Leben,
