Habe deine Lust am Herrn / der dir schenket Lust und leben

Here is my translation of the Christian Life hymn “Habe deine Lust am Herrn” (Benjamin Schmolck, d. 1737), Ev.-Luth. Gsb #518, based on Psalm 37:4, first appearing in the author’s Heilige Flammen . . . (1704). It is not to be confused with the anonymous hymn starting “Habe deine Lust am Herrn / Meine Seel im ganzen Leben.” The appointed melody is “Jesus meine Zuversicht.”

 

IN the Lord thyself delight,
Who doth life and gladness send thee,
Then thy star of mercy bright
Shall with thousand rays attend thee;
Faithfully He offers thee
What thy heart desires to see.

2 Leave the world its vain delight;
Soon to tears dissolves its treasure.
He whose heart is fixed aright,
In God only finding pleasure,
Meets, wherever he may be,
What his heart desires to see.

3 Such delight arises when
In the Word a man God knoweth;
This delight goes forth again
As in fire of love he gloweth,
Thus he nears that destiny
Which his heart desires to see.

4 Who doth in the Lord delight,
In His will he also dwelleth;
Such a man seeks day and night
To fulfill what Jesus telleth.
Thus he findeth verily
What his heart desires to see.

5 This delight may burdens bring,
Only patiently keep bearing;
After present suffering,
Thou wilt in delights be sharing,
And in heaven find with glee
What thy heart desires to see.

Habe deine Lust am Herrn,
der dir schenket Lust und leben,
so wird dir dein Gnadenstern
tausend holde Strahlen geben;
denn er beut dir treulich an,
was dein Herz nur wünschen kann.

2 Laß der Welt die eitle Lust,
die in Weinen sich verkehret;
wer das Herz in seiner Brust
Gott allein zur Lust gewähret,
dieser trifft in Allem an,
was das Herze wünschen kann.

3 Lust an Gott erhebet sich, [steigt über sich,]
wenn man Gott im Worte kennet;
Lust an Gott ist innerlich,
wenn man in der Liebe brennet;
solche Lust geht eine Bahn,
die das Herze wünschen kann.

4 Wer die Lust am Herren hat,
hat auch Lust an seinem Willen,
und bemüht sich früh und spat,
solchen Willen zu erfüllen;
denn so wird ihm auch gethan,
was das Herz nur wünschen kann.

5 Ist die Lust nicht ohne Last
trag geduldig die Beschwerden;
wenn du wohl gelitten hast,
