Ein Christ kann ohne Kreuz nicht sein

Here is my translation of the Cross and Comfort hymn “Ein Christ kann ohne Kreuz nicht sein” (David Nerreter, d. 1726), Ev.-Luth. Gsb #523, first in the author’s Zu dem Lobe Gottes angestellte geistliche Sing-Schule (Nurem. 1701). According to Fischer, Stier calls it a “very deeply comforting lesson on the inevitability and blessing of suffering.” It was included in Quedlinburg 1736, etc. The melody is “Was Gott thut das ist wohlgethan.”

 

FROM cross no Christian can be free,
Therefore be not aggrievèd
Whenever cross and agony
Are by God’s sons receivèd.
The dearer they,
The heavier weigh
The Father’s strokes availing.
Such is His way unfailing.

2 From cross no Christian can be free,
God’s will is this, no other;
This life’s distress and agony
Are blessings from thy Father.
Must it be so,
Then let it go.
’Tis hands of love that send it
Unto thy soul, to mend it.

3 From cross no Christian can be free.
It drives them to be praying,
It draws them from hypocrisy,
Their heart on Jesus staying;
So scorn it not
With stubborn thought
When thou art cross-offended;
So shall thy soul be mended.

4 From cross no Christian can be free.
It must be there to wake us
From slumb’ring in iniquity.
Oh, what a fright would shake us,
If suddenly
Eternity
And trumpet loudly calling
Upon us should be falling!

5 From cross no Christian can be free.
It teaches hate of sinning
And to embrace unshakably
Our God with love unfeigning.
Things pass away,
God stands for aye.
Consider and endeavor
To love what lasts forever.

6 From cross I too would not be free.
I’ll bear what God may bring me,
’Tis my dear Father sends it me,
Brief are the woes that sting me
Nor meant for ill;
To faith God will
All joy for sorrow offer;
With Christ therefore I’ll suffer.

Ein Christ kann ohne Kreuz nicht sein.
Drum laß dichs nicht betrüben,
wenn Gott versucht mit Kreuz und Pein
die Kinder, die ihn lieben.
Je lieber Kind,
je ernster sind
des frommen Vaters Schläge.
Schau, das sind Gottes Wege.

2 Ein Christ kann ohne Kreuz nicht sein.
Gott wills nicht anders haben.
Auch dieses Lebens Noth und Pein
sind deines Vaters Gaben.
Solls denn so sein,
so geh es ein.
Es kommt von Liebeshänden;
Gott wird nichts Böses senden.

3 Ein Christ kann ohne Kreuz nicht sein.
Das Kreuz lehrt fleißig beten,
zieht ab vom eitlen Trug und Schein
und lehrt zu Jesu treten.
Drum wirfs nicht hin
mit sprödem Sinn,
wenns nun zu dir gekommen;
es soll der Seele frommen.

4 Ein Christ kann ohne Kreuz nicht sein.
Das muß uns immer wecken;
wir schliefen sonst in Sünden ein.
Wie müßten wir erschrecken,
wenn unbereit
die Ewigkeit
und der Posaunen Schallen
uns würde überfallen!

5 Ein Christ kann ohne Kreuz nicht sein.
Es lehrt die Sünde hassen
und unsern lieben Gott allein
mit rechter Lieb umfassen.
Die Welt vergeht,
und Gott besteht.
Bedenks und laß dich üben,
das ewge Gut zu lieben.

6 Auch ich will ohne Kreuz nicht sein.
Was Gott schickt, will ich tragen.
Schickts doch der liebste Vater mein,
sinds doch nur kurze Plagen
und wohlgemeint!
Wer gläubig weint,
lebt dort in steten Freuden.
Ich will mit Christo leiden.
