Dennoch bleib ich stets an dir / mein Erlöser . . .

Here is my translation of the Christian Life / Devotion to Christ hymn, “Dennoch bleib ich stets an dir / mein Erlöser . . .” (Johann Jacob Rambach, d. 1735), from Ev.-Luth. Gsb #508, earlier included in the author’s Geistreiches Haus-Gsb (1735). According to Koch IV, p. 533, it appeared earlier in Rambach’s Poetische Fest-Gedanken  . . . (1727) in the appendix of new hymns, with the title: “The resolve to stay with Christ.” It is to be distinguished from Schmolck’s earlier hymn, “Dennoch bleib ich stets an dir / Wenn wir alles gleich zuwider” (1704), “D. b. i. s. a. d. / obschon von so vielen Leiden” (J. A. L. Reitz, 1719), and “D. b. i. s. a. d. / Obgleich Sünd und Hölle wüthen” (H. Ernst, 1752). The appointed melody is “Jesus meine Zuversicht.”

I WILL always stay with Thee,
Christ, my Comfort and my Savior,
At Thy side I long to be
Lying now and hence forever.
Fairest Crown of life to me!
I will always stay with Thee.

2 By Thy mighty hand of grace
I was taken with affection
When I joined the native place
of all mortals by election
Though the devil snatch for me,
I will always stay with Thee.

3 Though the wayward world assay
Out of Thy embrace to drive me—
Though it swear, as is its way,
Glory, wealth, and bliss to give me,
Oh! I’ll answer instantly:
I will always stay with Thee.

4 Though my very flesh and blood
Tempt me to forsake my Savior,
Boldness fills me like a flood
More to hold Him and His favor
And to sigh more fervently:
Still I’ll always stay with Thee.

5 Though I feel the cross oppress
And affliction aggravate me,
Yet no torment or distress
From my Head can separate me,
But my banner’s mot shall be:
I will always stay with Thee.

6 Even in death’s gloomy vale
My Jesus still in love enfolds me,
Anguish cannot there assail
Since the Prince of Life beholds me.
Dying, I’ll cry eagerly:
I will always stay with Thee.

7 I will always stay with Thee
So shall it abide forever;
From that high felicity
Fiend and foe shall drive me never.
Even here my song shall be:
I will always stay with Thee!

GERMAN
Dennoch bleib ich stets an dir,
mein Erlöser, mein Vergnügen!
mich verlanget dort und hier
nur an deiner Brust zu liegen.
Meines Lebens schönste Zier!
dennoch bleib ich stets an dir.

2 Deine starke Gnadenhand
hat mich liebreich aufgenommen
als ich in das Vaterland
derer Sterblichen gekommen.
Greift der Satan gleich nach mir,
dennoch bleib ich stets an dir.

3 Suchet die verderbte Welt
Mich aus deinem Arm zu reißen;
will sie Ehre, Lust und Geld
mir nach ihrer Art verheißen,
o! so sprech ich bald zu ihr:
dennoch bleib ich stets an dir.

4 Reizet mich mein Fleisch und Blut,
meinen Jesum zu verlassen,
so bekomm ich frischen Muth,
ihn noch fester anzufassen,
und ich seufze für und für:
dennoch bleib ich stets an dir.

5 Bricht des Kreuzes Stamm herein,
überfällt mich Angst und Leiden,
so vermag doch keine Pein,
mich von meinem Haupt zu scheiden;
und ich schreib in mein Panier:
dennoch bleib ich stets an dir.

6 Selbst im finstern Todesthal
bleibt die Freundschaft ungetrennet;
ich empfinde keine Qual,
wenn der Lebensfürst mich kennet.
Sterbend ruf ich mit Begier:
dennoch bleib ich stets an dir.

7 Dennoch bleib ich stets an dir:
dabei soll es ewig bleiben.
Aus dem selgen Lustrevier
soll mich einst kein Feind vertreiben.
Darum sing ich schon allhier:
dennoch bleib ich stets an dir.
