Also hat Gott geliebt die Welt

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Also hat Gott geliebt die Welt” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for Monday of Whitsun-week, with the final supplicatory stanza from later editions. Gesius 1605 omits this hymn in favor of another hymn on the same text fitted to the tune “Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ.” I suggest the

FOR God so loved the world that He
His Son our Ransom gave to be,
That none should perish evermore
Who in Him trust and Him adore.

2 But He salvation them will give,
In grace and mercy make them live;
God sent His Son by virgin birth
And made Him known to men on earth:

3 That He might not as judge condemn,
But from their sins deliver them;
Who doth in Him believe is free,
Who doth not so, condemned is he.

4 Who in God’s sole begotten Son
Believeth not, is judged alone.
The Light came to our earthly shore,
But mortals loved the darkness more.

5 For evil were their deeds; for light
Is hateful to the sinner’s sight.
Himself from light he keeps removed,
Lest e’er his deeds should be reproved.

6 But he that faithful is and true
Comes to the light in open view,
And lets his work be manifest,
No fear of judgment in his breast.

*7 The new birth be on us conferred
By Spirit and by saving Word,
Lord Christ! For sinful flesh and blood

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ihr Christen Herzn, erhebet euch” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for Whitsunday, from the Epistle reading, Acts 2. I give the longer form of the melody as well as a simplification from Schein.

YE Christian hearts, with joy arise,
Your songs send to the starry skies,
Rejoice and shout for joy to God,
And ever give Him thanks and laud.

2 Who hath His throne in heav’n above,
And sends the Holy Ghost in love;
In the Apostles now discerned
Through them to God the people turned.

3 In one place they were gatherèd,
And called on God, as Christ had said;
A rushing as of wind thereat
Filled all the house wherein they sat.

4 Their tongues were cloven and they gleamed,

The Lord and spoke unto their shame,
The hardness of their hearts reproved,
Their feeble faith, so swiftly moved.

2 For they would not the tidings trust
Which told His rising from the dust.
He bade them go the world around
And make the Gospel to resound.

3 Go forth, and every creature tell
Lest any man be lost to hell.
He that believes, let baptized be,
And he hath peace eternally.

4 But who in Me will not believe
Is damned, and must forever grieve.

Spiritus sancti gratia (brevis)

Here is my translation of the shorter, 3-stanza version of the Pentecost hymn, “Spiritus sancti gratia,” with Alleluias, found in ELGB #173, after which a German version was also made, “Der heilig Geist hernieder kam,” ELGB #174, an older translation of which is already in Walther’s Hymnal (2012). A note is required on the text in the Buffalo Synod hymnal, 2nd ed.: Here the first stanza is inadvertently missing the last line before the Alleluia, and the line “replevit sua gratia” is taken from the longer form of a hymn–a typo, no doubt. I also include the melody from the Dresden Gsb (1656), which gives a nice form of the melody with both the Latin and German text.
