Here is my translation of the hymn, “Christus sprach, der getreue Hirt” (N. Herman, 1560), from the author’s Sontags-Evangelia for Exaudi Sunday. Gesius 1605 assigns the same composition indicated for “Da die eilf Jüngr beisammen warn,” an elaboration of the

Mel.: Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ.
  

SAID Christ, of shepherds true the Sum:
“The Comforter shall shortly come,
Whom from the Father I will send,
You, My disciples, to attend.

2 “The Spirit of all truth is He,
Who from the Father’s graciously
Proceedeth, and is sent to you,
To testify of Me what’s true.

3 “Yea, as the Spirit testifies
Of Me, ye too shall do likewise,
For from the first ye were with Me,
And well My doctrine know and see.

4 “Therefore I would warn you before,
For ye shall bear afflictions sore;
They shall to you the temple close,
And all distress on you impose

5 “A time shall come with certainty
When they will kill you fearlessly,
And who hath pow’r to make you die
Will think he pleaseth God thereby.

6 “This shall they do to you, since none
Hath known the Father or the Son;
Of God, His Word, and Him He sent
To them, they all are ignorant.

7 “I say these things,” saith Christ the Lord,
That when they come with ban and sword,
Ye may remember and recall
That I before have told you all.

8 “These things I said not at the first,
Lest in despair your heart should burst,
For I was with you, and for you
In danger was your Keeper true.”

*9 Lord, when the world condemneth us,
And shames the preaching-office thus,
Let us the Spirit’s help possess
And fearlessly Thy Word confess.

Christus sprach, der getreue Hirt,
wenn nu der Tröster kommen wird,
den ich vom Vater senden werd
zu euch, mein Jünger auf die Erd.

2 Den Tröster und Geist der Wahrheit,
der vom Vater der Gütigkeit,
zu euch gesandt wird, und ausgeht,
und mir zum wahren Zeugen steht.

3 Dieser Geist wird zeugen von mir,
desgleichen auch, werd zeugen ihr,
denn ihr von Anfang bei mir seid,
wißt umd mein Lehr und thun Bescheid.

4 Drum ich zuvor euch warnen will,
dennn ihr werdt müßen leiden viel,
sie werden euch thun in den Bann,
und alles Unglück legen an.

5 Es kommt ein solche Zeit herbei,
daß man euch wird ohn alle Scheu
töten, und wer solchs enden kann,
wird denken Gott hat Gfallen dran.

6 Solchs werden sie euch darum thon,
daß sie den Vater noch den Sohn,
Gott und sein Wort nicht han erkannt,
und den er zu ihn hat gesandt.

7 Das sag ich, sprach der Herre Christ,
daß, wenn die Zeit vorhanden ist,
daß ihr alsdenn gedenket dran,
daß ichs euch vor hab kund gethan.

8 Anfangs hab ichs euch nicht gesagt,
auf daß ihr nicht würdet verzagt,
denn allzeit weil ich bei euch war,
beschützt ich euch in aller Gfahr.

*9 Herr Christ, wenn uns die Welt verdammt,
lästert und schändt das Predigtamt,
laß uns dein heilgen Geist stehn bei,
daß wir dein Wort bekennen frei.
