Erhör, o Gott! das heiße Flehn

Here is my translation of the confirmation (congregational) hymn, “Erhör, o Gott! das heiße Flehn” (Anon. 18th c.), in GGELB #249 and #250 with melody assignment “Komm heilger Geist, Herre Gott” and rubric “As the Congregation sings it.” The two hymns are counterparts for congregation and responding confirmands, and this hymnal are ascribed to the “Hanover Gsb.” The German text is absent from Fischer’s lexicon and appears to stem from the 18th c., employing the later form of the meter with an extra syllable in the first line. I find it (and its counterpart) in the Harz Gsb (Clausthal, 1768) with almost identical rubrics, and listed as one hymn with two parts, (a) and (b); so also Ziegler’s Christliches Gsb (1789ff.), Mecklenburg 1794. In my translation I follow the meter most typical now in English use, which makes all trochaic lines iambic by the addition or reduction of slurs as appropriate.

GOD, hear the heart’s fervent plea
Of these Thy children come to Thee!
In mercy look upon them now,
Thy members they, their Head art Thou:
O Father, Son, and Spirit, Lord,
The blessing promised in Thy Word
Give them, and with Thy gifts them fill,
And comfort give their soul in every ill.
Have mercy, Lord! Have mercy, Lord!

2 They would this day, firm and true,
Their covenant with Thee renew,
And solemnly their pledge confirm,
To love Thee through life’s bitter term,
Unswayed in faith, in purity,
And guileless in their walk to be.
O Triune God! Amen proclaim,
And seal the pledge they tender in Thy name:
And strengthen them! And strengthen them!

3 Let them a bold heart possess,
And plant their pledge’s sacredness
Within their soul so strong and deep
That what they purpose, they may keep.
And let us too, with lips and heart,
Renew Thy cov’nant for our part,
And some day joined, as we implore,
Go with them through Thy heaven’s blessed door!
