Gottes Gnade sei mit euch

Here is my translation of the post-Confirmation hymn, “Gottes Gnade sei mit euch” (Johann Friedrich Köhler, d. 1820), in NEGB #125 in 3 stanzas, omitting those sung by the confirmands, with title “After Communion” and cipher “R,” with melody assignment “Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.” It appears in hymnals from about 1800 (Duchy of Berg 1800, Natorp’s Sammlung 1803, Arnstadt 1811, Bremen (home) 1812, and abbr. in Selmar’s Ritual für katholische Geistliche 1812), usually with the melody “Jesus meine Zuversicht” assigned and in 5 stanzas with the confirmands’ singing 3–4, with title “Dialog Hymn” specifying the first stanza(s) to be sung by the congregation or choir and 3–4 by the confirmed (and possibly by the better of the young singers at the renewal of Baptism), and the final stanza to be sung by all. Henkel makes it a simple congregational hymn of 3 stanzas. Since the Arnstadt Gsb 1811, ed. Busch, identifies the author as J. F. Köhler. Perhaps the Schwabacher K of Köhler was mistaken for an R (the two characters being somewhat similar in that typeface), unless there is some other explanation for the cipher.

 

MAY God’s grace be with you all!
May it grant you strength and blessing.
Walk as angels bold and tall,
Your high purpose well possessing.
Great shall be your wages then,
When the Lord shall judge all men.

2 Sacred may ye hold this day,
And the vows that here are spoken.
What your lips and heart did say
Never suffer to be broken!

2 Heilig sei euch dieser Tag,
