Wir danken dir, Herr, daß du hast

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wir danken dir, Herr, daß du hast / zum Tisch aller Genaden” (B. Ringwaldt, 1582), from the author’s Evangelia, the post-Gospel prayer hymn for Trinity XX.

Mel.: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.

WE thank Thee, Lord and Father blest,

Who, by Thy servants spreading

Thy Word, dost bid us be Thy guest

At Thy Son’s gracious wedding.

Oh, grant as well Thy grace divine,

That all may come to Thee and dine

With all delight and gladness!

2 And help us that in heart we may,

As it God’s sons behooveth,

Be robed in faith, which day by day

To Christian love us moveth,

And with our actions make it known

That heaven’s kingdom is alone

Our hope and consolation.

3 Let us be careful and make sure

And Christianly endeavor

From all offenses clean and pure

To keep our garment ever,

Which by Thy godly Majesty

Was put on us in Christ when we

Were washed in Baptism’s water.

4 Thy Son is our own flesh and bone,

Whom Thou to us betrothest.

We are Thy dear ones, yea, Thine own

Whom ere the worlds Thou chosest.

O Father, cast us not from Thee,

But this Thy Son’s great honor see,

Who was made Man to save us.

5 Bring us to Christ, our Bridegroom dear,

For whom we oft are longing;

The world and foe are hostile here,

Thy Christians often wronging.

O Lord, us in Thy mercy view!

From all their hatred take us to

The rest Thy Son hath won us.

GERMAN

Wir danken dir, Herr, daß du hast

zum Tisch aller Genaden,

auf deinen Sohn uns lan zu Gast

durch deine Diener laden.

Gib doch dein göttlich Gnad darzu,

daß jedermann erscheinen thu,

mir Lust und allen Freuden.

2 Hilf auch, daß wir im Glauben rein

(der denn die Liebe treibet)

als rechte Gotteskinderlein

im Herzen seind bekleidet,

und mit der That beweisen fein,

daß wir uns haben nur allein

des Himmelreichs getröstet.

3 So wohl laß uns mit allem Fleiß

als Christen sein geflissen,

daß wir das Ehrkleid halten weiß

von groben Ärgernissen,

so uns dein göttlich Majestät

in Christo angezogen hat

durchs Wasserbad im Worte.

4 Dein Sohn, der ist ja unser Bein,

du hast ihn uns vermählet.

Wir seind ja die Geliebten dein,

von Anbeginn erwählet.

O Vater, laß uns nimmermehr

von wegen deines Sohnes Ehr

der unser Mann ist worden.

5 Bring uns zu unserm Bräutigam,

an den wir oft gedenken,

hie ist uns Welt und Teufel gram,

und thun uns heftig kränken.

O Herr, laß dich erbarmen das,

und nimm uns aus dem großen Haß

in deines Sohnes Ruhe. Amen.

Was Lobes soll man dir, o Jesu, singen

Here is my translation of the hymn “Was Lobes soll man dir, o Jesu, singen” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Sunday after Epiphany. While proper melodies for the text were devised by König’s time (1730s), the melody assignment by Neumeister indicates a hymn from the earlier Boh. Brethren. hymnal, which was sung to a melody matching the Tenor line from the setting of the Pia Cantio Vitam quae faciunt (popularized with the text “Gaudete, Gaudete”):

Mel.: Was Lobes solln wir dir, o Vater, singen?

WHAT praise, O Jesus, shall we ever sing Thee?
And what thank-off’ring for Thy graces bring Thee?

2 For were we e’en from heaven’s height descended,
Thou art far greater, higher, and more splendid.

3 And were our mouths like angels’ tongues before Thee,
They would
yet fall far short of Thy due glory.

4 Mighty God, Thou becam’st a mortal lowly,
Wast made like us, yet free from sin and holy.

5 Thou art in truth of all mankind the Father,
And yet wast pleased to be a Child, our Brother.

6 Thou art so high t can be higher,
And yet to be made lowest didst desire.

7 The majesty whereof Thou could’st be partaking
Thou gladly didst forgo, Thy throne forsaking.

8 Thou art the Lord and Maker of creation,
And yet becamest poor, of lowly station.

9 All that exists is by Thy Law corrected,
And yet wast Thou found to the Law subjected.

10 Thus didst Thou, who Thyself art adoration,
Obedient bear cross, death, and degradation.

11 All this therefore Thou took’st on Thee, dear Savior,
To bring us all to heav’nly grace and favor.

12 Yea, therefore wast Thou here on earth abasèd,
That we might yonder high in heav’n by raisèd.

13 O faithfulness! O marks of love unerring,
Who can adore Thee, Jesus, as deserving?

14 Grant us by Thy example to endeavor
To walk before Thee humble-hearted ever.

15 Let us stand bold in faith, with captive reason,
Till Thou exalt us in due time and season.

16 Then shalt thou have for all Thy grace and favor
All honor, glory, praise, and laud forever.

GERMAN

Was Lobes soll man dir, o Jesu, singen?

 Here is my translation of  Laurentii’s hymn, “Nun ist die Freudenzeit erfüllt” (Evangelia Melodica, 1700), designated as the second hymn based on the Gospel First Christmas Day and constituting a contemplation of the poverty and humility of Mary and especially of Jesus in His incarnation as an example for the believer’s humble reception of the infant Jesus in the heart. The appointed melody “Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her.”

NOW is the time of joy fulfilled,

To many fathers once concealed:

To save us, God sends forth His Son

Into the world from heaven’s throne.

2 The time for Mary now had come,

To bear within her spotless womb

In Bethlehem the Joy foretold

For all mankind by prophets old.

3 Oh, let my heart like Mary’s be!

For rose and myrrh may well agree;

The valley’s lily, Sharon’s rose,

With myrrh at all times buds and grows.

4 The bitter myrrh of true remorse,

Bedewed with tears in ample course,

Are blossoms held by heaven dear,

And to such Jesus draweth near.

5 Be as a virgin tender, pure,

And thou wilt see salvation sure;

With Mary poor in spirit be,

That Jesus may so pity thee.

6 Be thou in time God’s promised bride,

That thou may’st ever so abide,

And then what bridegroom shall be thine?

The Champion from King David’s line.

7 Though thou on earth shouldst find no ease,

Remember that it doth God please;

In Him the poor are rich and prized,

For they are like to Jesus Christ.

8 Saint Mary bore an Infant mild,

In swaddling cloths is found the Child

All in a crib, no crown or throne,

Yet He is God’s eternal Son.

9 O soul, set in thine inner shrine

A crib where thy Lord may recline;

Let faith and love His swaddling be,

In which thou wrapp’st Him fittingly.

10 Consider, soul, the humble grace

That thy dear Jesus here displays;

The burden Adam’s pride had made

By humble Jesus is repaid.

11 In stable rude He lays His head

Upon a crib, a rough-made bed

Of hay and straw; oh, think thereof

When oft the rich man thou dost love.

12 The inn has scarcely room to spare

For thy dear Jesus to lie there;

If all the world grant thee no space,

Recall what happened in this place.

13 But do thou purge away and clear

A lodging for this Treasure dear

Built safely in thy faithful breast,

And thou in Jesus shalt find rest.

14. Yea, dearest Savior, come to me!

Here is a heart that longs for Thee

And hopes to have in Thee a share;

Praise be to Thee both now and e’er!

GERMAN

Nun ist die Freudenzeit erfüllt,

die vielen Vätern war verhüllt:

Gott sendet seinen eingen Sohn,

der Welt zum Heil vom Himmelsthron.

2 Es kamm Maria ihre Zeit,

Daß sie, der ganzen Welt zur Freud,

gebären sollt in Davids Stadt,

wie Gott es lang verheißen hatt.

3 Ach, sei mein Herz Marien Art,

weil Ros und Myrrhen sich gepaart,

die Sarons Blum, die Ros im Tal

blüht bei den Myrrhen allemal.

4 Die bittre Myrrhen wahrer Buß

benetzt mit einem Tränenguß,

sind Blumen, die der Himmel liebt,

Zu welchen Jesus sich begiebt.

5 Sei, wie ein Jungfrau, rein und zart,

so wird das Heil dir offenbart;

sei mit Maria geistlich arm,

daß Jesus deiner sich erbarm.

6 Sei Gott verlobt in dieser Zeit,

daß du es bleibst in Ewigkeit;

du bist die Braut, dein Bräutigam,

das ist der Held aus Davids Stamm.

7 Bist du gleich elend auf der Welt,

so denke, daß es Gott gefällt;

Gott liebt die Armen, welche reiche

in ihm, dieweil sie Jesu gleich.

8 Maria die gebar ein Kind—

ein Kind, das man in Windeln findt—

ja, Krippen sonder Krohn und Thron,

und dennoch ist es Gottes Sohn.

9 Ach, Seele, laß dein Herzensschrein,

des Herren Jesu Krippe sein;

laß Glaub und Lieb die Windeln sein,

da du dies Kindlein windest ein.

10 Bedenk die Demut doch im Geist,

die Jesus dir zum Beispiel weist;

was Adams Hochmut hat verdient,

hat Jesu Demut ausgesühnt.

11 Er liegt im Stall, sein Ruhestätt

ist eine Kripp und hartes Bett

von Heu und Stroh, ach! denk daran,

wenn man oft spielt vom reichen Mann.

12 Es ist ja in der Herberg kaum

für deinem liebsten Jesu Raum,

gönnt dir die Welt auch keinen Ort,

so denke, was geschehen dort.

13 Du aber mache Raum und Platz

zur Herberg diesem teuren Schatz,

in deiner Seelen, so wirst du

bei deinem Jesu finden Ruh.

14 Ja, liebster Heiland, komm zu mir,

hier ist ein Herz, das mit Begier

dich sucht und wünscht, und nichtes mehr,

dir sei hier und dort ewig Ehr.

Fit porta Christi pervia

Here is my translation of the hymn “Fit porta Christi pervia” (Ambrose, 4th c.) according to the short cento found in Lossius (1579). It had been inserted in Sedulius poem beginning “A solis ortus cardine” but is affirmed as Ambrose’s work by ancient and medieval testimony. The melody is that provided by Lossius.

THE GATE of Christ, all full of grace,
In ways unseen hath yielded place;
The King passed through what shut shall be
As it hath been, eternally.

2. The Offspring of the Light divine
Emerged from out the Virgin’s shrine:—
The Church’s Spouse and Savior He,
Who made all things by His decree.

3. He of his mother Crown and Joy,
Of all believers Hope most high,
Who by death’s bitter cup hath paid
And for our sins atonement made.

4. To God the Father ever one
With God the sole-begotten Son
And God the Spirit, glory be
Both now and for eternity.

Translation © 2014 Matthew Carver.
