Herr Jesu, habe Acht auf mich

My next new hymn translation for Lochner’s Passion-book consisted of stanzas 1–2 of Christoph von Pfeil’s (d. 1782) “Herr Jesu, habe Acht auf mich,” for the end of Devotion 14 (“Christ’s Further Discourses after Judas’ Departure”). I here give a full translation, supplementing the text from von Pfeil’s Evangelisches Gesangbuch (1782), where it bears the title “The Lord’s Preservation in the Hour of Trial.”

LORD Jesus, to my soul attend,
  And in my life forever
I will mine eyes upon Thee bend,
  And turn them from Thee never.
Against the tempter’s craft and might
Defend me! So shall all be right.

2 Lord Jesus, who didst suffer all,
  And bear, like us, temptation,
And if I in temptation fall,
  For me mak’st intercession:
Attend me in temptation’s hour,
And save me thence with godly pow’r.

3 Forgive me that I oft have erred,
  Nor kept my watch abiding,
And have not driven by God’s Word
  The foe back into hiding,
Nor always sought Thy step to trace:
O Lord, attend me in Thy grace.

4 Go, Satan, get thee gone from me!
  I’m dead to all transgression,
To wicked lust, the world, and thee.
  Bought by Christ’s blood and Passion,
To Him I live till life shall end,
And pray Thee, Lord, my soul attend!

Herr Jesu, habe Acht auf mich,
and laß in meinem Leben
mich immer, auch mein Herr! auf dich,
und auf mich Achtung geben!
vor des Versuchers List und Macht
schütz mich; so bin ich wohl bewacht.

2 Herr Jesu! der du überall,
wie wir, Versuchung littest,
und wenn ich in Versuchung fall,
für mich beim Vater bittest.
Hab in Versuchung auf mich Acht,
und hilf heraus mit Jesus-Macht.

3 Vergib, daß ich nicht immerfort
auf meiner Hut geblieben,
daß ich den Feind mit Gottes Wort
nicht von mir abgetrieben;
nicht an dein Vorbild stets gedacht:
Herr! hab auf mich in Gnaden Acht.

4 Weg Satan! hebe dich von mir!
